The girl had a small cottage in the depths of the woods. Outside the cottage, various precious herbs were planted. The phoenix immediately began to wantonly eat the herbs as it pleased. The girl simply watched as the bird greedily devoured the fruits of her hard work with a smile. “Eat as you please, little crow!”

The phoenix naturally did not pay attention as it ate. After swallowing until it was full, it clambered up to perch on a tree near the cottage and fell asleep. The girl cleaned up the mess created by the bird and went to sleep.

The next morning, the phoenix woke up with wings again! As it flew up to the sky in jubilation, the bird saw the bare earth where until yesterday, there were various precious herbs planted. To repay the girl, the phoenix scoured the entire forest picking up precious herbs and putting them away into a small ring on its talon. At the time of twilight, the girl found a large amount of precious herbs deposited in front of her. She lovingly stroked the bird while exclaiming, “Good crow!”

Suddenly, the black crow scratched a character on the ground. ‘Feng’, meaning phoenix!

The girl saw that the wingless crow had miraculously regenerated its wings! Thinking that perhaps it truly was a phoenix, she said: “Good phoenix, then! From today, your name is Little Fire!”

The phoenix trilled at the nickname, not realizing that the girl now concerned the bird a pet!

Not wishing to return until it had strength to destroy the sect that opposed it, the phoenix treated the little cottage as its new home. On realizing that the phoenix was a smart bird, she taught him to read and speak. Soon, the phoenix was as wise as an erudite scholar under the girl’s teaching.

The day came when the girl taught the phoenix the path of human cultivation. Even though it would not raise his strength, it was the path of his enemies, so the phoenix gratefully listened.

After that, the girl passed on an entire shelf of cultivation manuals. “These are the manuals of my Ninefire Sect. Since you are a phoenix following the path of fire, it might grant you some inspiration. Due to my unfortunate constitution, cultivating fire is impossible for me and my destiny is to remain mortal. Having crossed a Tribulation, the phoenix would now ascend to the Immortal World. Its days in the Mortal World were numbered. The phoenix silently gave a ring containing the plundered legacy of the Ninefire Sect. The girl, now a woman, accepted it with a kiss.

The girl was unambitious, so the phoenix did not annex a sect for her to rule after his ascension. All she wanted was to continue his bloodline and bear a fruit of their love. The phoenix gladly granted her wish. To smooth the path of cultivation for his children, the phoenix devised a cultivation art in a single night and fused it with his woman’s bloodline.
