《The Soul of MorningStar》Chapter 20 Demons and assorted troubles part 2

After my realization, guilt threatened to overwhelm me. When it became unbearable, I was saved from confessing my sins by a loud growl. I blushed to the roots of my hair.

“Huh-” A growl louder than the preceding one sounded in the room.

“Are you hungry?” James was laughing at me. I wanted to be mad but the hunger was too strong to allow any other emotion to dominate.

“Come on.” He led me out of the room to a camp fire.

The outside scenery hadn't changed much since the last time I saw it. We were in a makeshift camp where the sole building was the one I had been in. They didn't have tents. Everything was out in the open.

People from all races mingled together like it was perfectly normal. In Althasia, Elves, dwarves and beastmen were considered as demons and thus, were persecuted but in this place they were all friends if the smile on their faces was any indication. They all had weapons on them even though there wasn't a fight around. They were busy doing whatever they did during the day.

I wolfed down the food James gave me. All the while I was eating, I could feel eyes on me. I sat straighter, I ate slower but their gazes were still fixed on me. I checked if there was something on my face. Finding nothing, I was going to ask James the reason of this scrutiny.

However, a group of men stopped in front of us. James got to his feet in a hurry. He put his hand on his heart and bowed.

“May I present you my friend Everheart Dreamweaver.”

“Nice to meet you. I'm Sevarin Faris the chief of this group. This here is Dominin Faris my brother, Holiatis Garbo my second-in-command and Pollex Skrillex.”

Sevarin looked like Legolas Greenleaf in that Lord of The Ring movie. He was tall, slender, blond and as white as a sheet. His brother, Dominin was the same but with shorter hair. Holiatis Garbo was a seven foot giant with a large scar at the right side of his face. The last one Pollex Skrillex was the hardest to describe. He was a beastman but I couldn't guess which beast he resembled.

“Nice to meet you.” I greeted back.

“I hope that your stay with us has been to your liking.”

“Yes, it has. But...I was wondering why did you bring me here?”

The place quieted down immediately. The whole camp had that deer-caught-in-the-headlights look on their faces. When they saw my eyes on them, they pretended to be busy at something different than eavesdropping.

“So...” I prompted a response from him.

“So, you see... you have a godly power. Help us, please.”

“To do what? Kill humans? You think I didn't notice that most people here were so-called demons.” I was being difficult but all the eyes fixed on me rattled my nerves.

“No, no. We don't want to kill humans. We want you to save us.”

“Wait! What? You know I'm just an acolyte, right?”

“You have a godly power. You can become a god.”

“No. Way.” I wasn't interested in becoming a god. I'd been playing on the StaViCon for less than a month real time and I already changed races 3 times. I didn't need a fourth even if I was intrigued. The goal I made for myself was to hold a race down for more than a month.

“You don't want to be a god?”

“No.” His disbelieving face was so funny that I couldn't prevent myself from laughing out loud. Before long, everyone was laughing with me.

“Come, there is someone I want you to meet.” Sevarin put his hand on my back and led me to an old Elven woman. She was sitting on a log in front of a fire. Sometimes, she got up to stir a pot.

“Everheart, please meet Carlisia. She's an oracle.”

An oracle was a wise and highly regarded person who could see the future or part of it depending on her strength. In Althasia, Oracles were nearly extinct as they had no fighting ability.

The woman's gaze bore into me. It was like she could see my soul.

“MorningStar.” I waited for her to say something else but she didn't. I threw a confused glance at Sevarin. He shrugged in ignorance.

“What's MorningStar?”

“The God of Hope and Despair. The Harbinger of happiness and destruction. “

“Huh? Is he the god you worship?”

“It's you.” Her eyes crept me out as they became totally white.

“When the blue moon appears, the new god will ascend. His reign of despair will bring happiness to the oppressed. Chaos will befall the multiverse as MorningStar advanced on his path.”

“My name's Everheart Dreamweaver. I don't know who this MorningStar is and I don't care I. Will. Not. Be. A. God.” I proclaimed through gritted teeth.

Her eyes came back to normal. They fixed on me with pity as I rushed inside the room I had been before.

I logged out to calm myself. I paced inside my room. When my thoughts weren't all over the place I logged back in. My determination was firm. I would heal my pets and get out of this game. I refused to become a god to please anyone. If someday I became one, it would be because I chose it, not because someone said I should.

When I appeared back in the room, James was here.

“Hey! Can my faith grow if I helped the demons?”

His smile blinded me. “Yes, there's no problem with it. Faith isn't tied to one god and it can't be decreased by them. Faith is a form of energy not a vow.”

Happy with his reassurance, I followed him out. Sevarin made a beeline for me. I was happy he didn't talk to me about what happened before. We made small talk when suddenly Carlisia screamed at the top of her lungs. With her finger, she pointed at a direction.

Everyone took their weapons in their hand. Tension skyrocketed in less than a second. I waited with bated breath to see what would come out.

OMG! No! The first demon came into sight. His red skin contrasted with the white of his eyes. His horn gleamed under the light of the fire that came out of his fingertips. Contrary to the ones I tried to kill in the forest, he was more muscular and his skin was more textured. Like it was a canvas.

Everyone trembled in fear. The first stream of fire hit the camp. A man screamed as he tried to extinguished the flames that engulfed his body. No one moved. Their shoulders dropped in defeat and depression.

Other demons came out of the darkness. They had a sword in their hands. They got in line with the first demon and they advanced all at once.

The scent of burned flesh floated to me. Sick to my stomach, I soldiered on.

“Water ball.” A ball of water appeared in the palm of my hand. I threw it at the beast man. The flames that previously consumed his life were extinguished. However he was too far gone in his panic to realize this fact. I threw a few more water ball at other people who were on fire.

My actions brought everyone out of their despair. Sevarin shouted orders.

“Archers retreat to the back and open fire! Warriors in formation! Defend! Everyone else flee back to the 3rd meeting point!”

Everyone ran to obey his orders. Sevarin took his sword in his hand and rushed at one of the demons. Dominin who had fallen back with the archers, shot arrows distracting the enemies.

The demons fought like one. While the first demon deflected the arrows with his fire, the others countered the warriors with their swords. Slowly but surely they kept advancing.

“Why isn't anyone using long range magic?” I asked James. We stood not far from where we were before. He was begging me to run but I refused to move.

“We can't do that.” I didn't have time to question more, a stream of fire was coming right at us.

“Wind blade.” I cut the stream in half. I didn't know how to support from the rear. “True form!”

I equipped my katana and rushed at the demons. I cut the right arm of the one fighting Sevarin. His sword fell to the ground. Sevarin took advantage of it and pierced his heart. The demon crumbled and stopped moving.

Having fought them before, I knew that he wouldn't stay down for long. I took the time to cut his limbs and I stuffed him into my inventory with the other. Sevarin had already moved to another demon.

The first demon had stopped attacking. He stared in my direction like he could see me. He aimed a flame spray at me. I laughed like a madman as the fire went through my body without hurting me. The demon's eyes widened in surprise. I ran in front of him and cut his arm. The pain barely reflected in his eyes before he threw a punch at me. He couldn't touch me.

“Is this what you're trying to do?” I punched him the same way he tried to do to me. A sick sound of bone breaking on bones resounded on the battlefield. He reeled at the shock. The others stopped their attacks and stared at him.

Their eyes were filled with fright as he cried in pain. He kept casting spells but they didn't hurt me. One of them even landed on one of his friends. He didn't have time to cry as he burnt on spot.

I was laughing madly as I cut him in pieces and stuffed him like his friends into my inventory. For the others, he disappeared in thin air. It was comical as their eyes were wide opened and their jaws was on the floor. My mana was full again.

“Fear conversion. All my fear into strength.”

I punched one of the demons. A wet tearing sound rose under my fist. His head flew away from his neck. As the surprise wore off, bemusement and then elation swept over me. The other demons got over their shock and ran away from the camp.

I dismembered the one whose head flew and put him in my inventory like the others. Finally with all enemies gone, I turned into a human.

“Your holiness!” I turned back toward the the inhabitants of the camp. They were all on their knees looking at me with feverish eyes.

“Oh crap!”
