《Praying For My Downfall》Interlude III : Axel

Axel used a two-handed stroke of the greatsword and the goblin’s head leapt from its shoulders, flipping end over end through the decrepit hut. Three more of the creatures were using their shitty bronze weapons to hack at him, but in his plate armor he was a veritable tank. A quick buttstroke with the pommel dashed the brains out of one, and then he brought his sword back up and down in a heavy slash, cutting the green goblin from shoulder to taint.
This one, he had to put his boot on to pull the sword free as it was caught in its pelvis. The last goblin tried to flee at the sight of this attack but Axel was not about to let that happen. He swung the heavy sword one-handed and it snipped through the middle of the goblin’s spine with ease.
He moved the cloth door hanging out of the way and walked back out into the goblin village, making sure that his companions were faring well. Yasaera, the elven mage, was lashing about her with fiery attacks, setting huts on fire when no goblins were near enough to catch ablaze. Kargoth Killhammer was bashing in the brains of a goblin babe, his beard full of guts and glory…and skull fragments. His eyes were blazing with the chance to kill his hated racial foes. Amos, their human healer, was standing beatifically in the middle of them all, casting heals when any tiny bit of damage got through to his party members.
“Remember, my fellows, that Lord Justinian has proclaimed these dark beasts evil by nature. They are the spawn of darkness, and with the forces of chaos returning to our fair world we cannot show any mercy. Kill them all, and let Lord Justinian sort them out.” The priest made the sign of his god in the air, and they all felt the majestic presence of that deific being. With this blessing on them, their killing desire magnified and they felt energized to wade into their holy slaughter even more.

Later, after all the goblins were dead, they looted the benighted souls and set the village ablaze to warn the other beasts in this godless wilderness that there was no point in attempting to live. They started their trek back to Far Westburg, which they were making their base for their current campaign.
“I think once we have rested, we should try to find that dungeon the old man in the tavern told us about. He said that some miners had broken through into a cave system and that there were leathery lizard monsters down there. Sounds like kobolds to me, and you know they always have treasure,” Axel remarked casually as he wiped the blood and guts off his sword.
“I agree Brother Axel, such is the type of work my Temple dispatched me from Dar’shon to do. I am so glad I could meet you all and show you the Justice of Lord Justinian. You and your companions have come to be incredible resources for the Temple.”
“Well, we appreciate how your Temple has been so open-handed with it’s resources as well. This armor,” he rapped a fist on his breastplate, “has made me a living terror to the beasts in these parts.”
“And the scrolls you provided me have greatly increased my spellpower,” said the elf wizard humbly. She was juggling a ball of fire from hand to hand, looking for something she could burn.
“We are always willing to outfit those who would serve the aims of the Church, and since you have agreed to follow the dictates on this campaign, Lord Justinian provides. Beasts and Travelers must be expunged from these lands so that the goodly people can reinhabity them. Only then can we start to put this land back together.”
The three adventurers looked at each other, and then nodded resolutely.
“I definitely agree!” Axel intoned forcefully.
