《The Last Watcher》Writing Systems and Suspicions

The fire crackled underneath the night sky, illuminating the small camp that the party had set up. Alissa tugged her cloak closer around her as a sudden gust of wind swept through the camp, causing all of them to shiver. Except for the Abyss Watcher. He simply sat on the small log he had designated as his seat which was situated opposite of Alissa, unfazed as he stared at the fire, his sword that leaned against his seat glinting against the light of the flame. To the left of the Abyss Watcher sat Caelan, who was sitting the closest to the fire as he looked at it with stars in his eyes.

His dark grey, lifeless eyes.

Eyes that were identical to the Abyss Watcher's own.

She glanced to the Abyss Watcher who continued to stare blankly at the fire, eyes betraying no emotion. The Abyss Watcher once again sensed her gaze, looking to her. They simply stared at each other for a few seconds before Alissa averted her gaze towards the fire. She didn't have to look to know that he was still staring at her. This was not ideal. Sure suspecting that an Adamantine adventurer was actually undead was one thing, but it got even worse when said adventurer starts to treat you with suspicion.

Thankfully her [Sense Threat] skill hadn't activated yet. Her [Sense Danger] skill was another thing entirely. Just being near him was terrifying. She herself was Level 112 and so expected [Sense Danger] to activate to some capacity considering that it didn't discriminate between allies and enemies, simply telling you how dangerous something was.

But the pressure that built in her head was much stronger than she expected, so much that she had to expend some of her [Mana] to turn it off. Never had she been forced to do that before. She used to be a part of the Lostian army and so had encountered her fair share of drakes, one of which being Level 163. And that was when she was still only Level 80. It had been bloody terrifying while they had fought it but she still didn't feel compelled to turn off [Sense Danger].

Yet this man, who was only Level 142, had.

She looked to her left, spotting Skyla once again arguing with Xander. She had to ask Skyla. Rogorth Academy was one of the best schools for knowledge of magic that you could go to, with it's students almost always using this knowledge to hit it big by becoming either powerful adventurers or even an archmage. They also happened to know the most about the [System] and how it worked. Of course they couldn't know everything, and considering that new and unique spells and classes could pop up at any time many often slipped past the Academy's watchful eye.

Thankfully, [Sense Danger] was one of the more well known skills and so was not victim to this. She just had to talk with her. She glanced back at the Abyss Watcher. Without alerting him.

Without warning Caelan suddenly stood up, a confident look on his face as he walked over to the Abyss Watcher. He stopped just in front of the Abyss Watcher, who simply stared at Caelan with a curious look in his eyes.

"Teach me how to fight." Caelan demanded, silence falling over the encampment as Xander and Skyla stopped their argument to look at Caelan in bewilderment.

The Abyss Watcher stared silently at him, Caelan nervously shuffling his feet in response. The Abyss Watcher then broke the stare, beginning to root around in his bag as he looked for something. He pulled out a piece of paper and quill and began to write on it, slightly confusing Alissa. When he was finished he presented his work, flipping it around to show them what he had written.

"...Uhhhh what does that say?" Caelan asked sheepishly, turning to the others for answers.

Unfortunately for Caelan everyone else remained just as clueless as he did. The Abyss Watcher had written down a series of jagged lines that seemed to form some sort of script, yet what it meant was beyond anyone's knowledge. The Abyss Watcher tilted his head in a questioning manner as he noticed their looks of confusion, turning the paper back around his eyes narrowed as he scanned it intensely, occasionally glancing up at the party as he did so.

He looked back up at the group again. He looked back down. He dropped the parchment, allowing it to fall down onto the grass below. The Abyss Watcher slammed his palm onto his face as he shook his head. Alissa tilted her head as she wondered what that whole display was about. She looked back down at the script, wondering what it meant. Her eyes widened in realisation.

"Can you not write Cerlesian?" She asked, the Abyss Watcher looking up and nodding in confirmation.

"I'm sorry what?" Skyla leaned forward, a single eyebrow raised, "You can't write?"

Alissa shook her head, "No, he can't write Cerlesian." She pointed out, gesturing to the paper and it's contents, "For some reason he understands Cerlesian but can't write it. What he wrote down very clearly means something, but we ourselves can't understand it."

Xander eyebrows raised, "Since when did you become an investigator?" He said with mild amusement.

Ignoring him Alissa looked to the Abyss Watcher, who nodded. This was...interesting. Her gaze dropped back down to the paper and hardened. If he could understand the language, but not write it down than it was possible that he knew the language by a different and more ancient name. Then there was the strange name of his class. Farron Blademaster. The Blademaster part she could understand, but what exactly 'Farron' meant was beyond her.

She remembered encountering someone during her time in the military that had a class called 'Lostian Battlemage'. According to him he had gained it by learning a way to fight as a battlemage that was completely unique to the way a Lostian fought. If the same applied for this situation then that meant that the Abyss Watcher learnt a way of fighting that was unique to a place called Farron. And from the way he had fought it was most certainly unique.

Problem was, she had never heard of Farron in her entire 193 years of existence. She hadn't heard it in conversation, nor while she was passing a conversation. Heck, she hadn't even seen it on any maps that she had perused during her military service. And she had done a lot of perusing.

That did leave another possibility, one which only reinforced her suspicions. Farron was a long lost nation or place, either decimated during a recent conflict so badly that it was wiped from the history books. Or, the more likely option considering how radically different his writing was to theirs, it was so old that it was eventually just completely forgotten about. Either way, the Abyss Watcher clearly came from a place that almost certainly did not exist anymore.

This was not looking good. She bit the knuckle of her index finger as she reviewed the evidence she had gathered so far. The Abyss Watcher had the same sort of grey eyes that undead had. An undead child immediately went to him for comfort, despite not looking friendly in the slightest. And his class hinted that he came didn't exist anymore. And the only way for a human to have survived long enough to outlast the legacy of some sort of nation is if he was brought back as an undead.

Looking to the Abyss Watcher she found that he had already stood up, taking his sword with him as he beckoned for Caelan to follow. The small undead blinked in shock for a second before hurriedly running after the Abyss Watcher who was quickly disappearing into the darkness of the night. Now was her chance.

"Hey Skyla." Alissa turned to face Skyla, "What exactly causes the [Sense Danger] skill?"

Skyla tilted her head in curiosity, "If I remember correctly [Sense Danger], as it's name suggests, activates based on how dangerous a creature or individual is to the user." She replied, Alissa frowning in response.

"So it isn't based on a person's level?"

Skyla chuckled slightly to herself, "Oh definitely not. They drilled that part of it into us since we first started learning about how [Skills] worked. Of course most of the time a person's danger often scale with their level so it is quite a common misconception."

Alissa licked her lips, "Does the danger scale based on the situation the user is in or does it only measure the danger of the person to the user as though it were a one on one fight?"

Skyla's eyes filled up with curiosity, "These are quite specific questions you have." She pointed out, "If you must know it is based one on one and does not calculate the situation. You'll want to have [Sense Threat] for that sort of on the go danger assessments. Now, why are you asking so much about this?"

Alissa avoided Skyla's gaze. Should she tell them? She didn't want to believe that the Abyss Watcher was undead herself, and telling these two was not necessary at this point. And then there was still the chance that the place the Abyss Watcher came from was so secretive that nobody had heard about it until now, and that the eye thing was just a coincidence. One thing she was sure of was that he wasn't a bad guy. Incredibly powerful and dangerous, but not a bad guy. The problem was that she didn't know anyone who would be able to tell her what the hell 'Farron' meant. She suddenly perked up, an idea forming in her head.

If this was some civilisation that had been destroyed than there would be one definitive way to tell. She would have to speak to a Carndolan.
