《The Last Watcher》Another Blackout, and some more Guild

Kayla watched the man leaning against the fence that was present in the back of the orphanage, surrounding the backyard. She frowned as she observed him. It was play time for the kids, the time where she lets them out into the rather large yard that was part of the property on which the large building sat. She still had no idea who he was, or what he actually did other than save some kids in trouble. But Olver and Argent seemed to trust him.
Argent in particular, as she was the only one near him, climbing the tree close by. Every other child stayed far back though, either outright ignoring him or whispering to each other about the scary man with the large sword. Even Olver kept his distance, opting for the ignoring route and playing with some friends on the other side of the yard.
The massive sword that the man usually carried around was leaning beside him against the fence. His arms were crossed as he continued to watch the kids. The one kid he did watch the most was Argent, who's silver hair could occasionally be seen through the leaves.
Honestly, it was kind of worrying her how much he just watched Argent. She hoped he wasn't one of those horrible people that preferred children. If he was then she was afraid that she wouldn't be able to stop him if he attempted any...unsavoury things.
Thankfully, he did not appear to have any sort of lust in his eyes. Rather, he seemed to be observing for some other reason. She frowned as she remembered when she had first found both Argent and Olver. They had been left on the orphanage's doorstep with some papers telling their names, a trail of blood leading to and away from the orphanage. After taking them inside and cleaning away the blood, she began to take care of them, casting a sleep spell on the crying Argent. Argent had also been left with a silver pendant, a blue tear stone being the centrepiece, and had kept it hidden in the small box beneath her bed.

While normally one would try and find the parents or guardians of kids left at your doorstep, Kayla understood the situation. After all, you don't just leave your own kids on an orphanages doorstep without a good reason. Their parents or guardians had obviously been in serious trouble, even more reinforced by the blood that she had found. And so she raised them, fed them, and kept them sheltered.
Now that the man was here though, and considering his focus on Argent she was worried. On one hand he could be someone friendly that was connected to their parents. On the other hand though, he could also be someone that was hostile against their parents. She favoured the first option though, considering that he had saved them from the potential kidnapping.
After a few more minutes of thinking she decided. Walking towards the man, she fought hard not to flinch as he noticed the movement, looking over to her. She persevered though, halting her advance directly in front of him. He simply stared into her eyes, his emotionless gaze piercing into her soul. Gulping slightly from the pressure she felt just being near him, a sign that her [Sense Danger] was in fact working, she finally spoke.
"I must once again thank you for your role in saving Argent and Olver." She began, scanning him for any reaction, yet finding none, "However, you must understand that I wish to know the name of their saviour." He remained silent, still staring at Kayla, "So...who exactly are you?" She said, confused now. He hadn't moved an inch, and continued to simply stare at her, unblinking with his dark grey eyes.
When he finally made a move he simply pointed at his mouth. Kayla tilted her head in confusion. Upon seeing this he then made a gesture with his finger the common action for being quiet. Kayla remained confused for a few more seconds before her eyes widened in realisation. He was [Mute]. Nodding in understanding she figured she could just use [Analyse to figure out his name.

"[Analyse]." She said, the man quickly holding up his hands signaling to not do that. But too late.

She blinked. The newly named Abyss Watcher face palmed as he looked at her, a small bit of hope piercing into his gaze as she stood before him.
"I'm gonna have to sit down." She said as she lowered herself to the ground, ignoring the fact that her clothes got dirty due to this. She looked up at the Abyss Watcher, who now looked on in confusion. She opened and closed her mouth, similar to a goldfish. Before she could speak however, one of the children came running up, slowing down noticeably once they fell under the gaze of the Abyss Watcher.
"Kayla, a lady that says she is from the Guild is at the door!" The small girl announced, shuffling nervously due to being so close to the Abyss Watcher. Kayla frowned in confusion, yet was happy for the distraction from her current situation. Yet she still worried about why exactly she was here.
"Did this lady say why she was here by any chance?" She replied with a question
It was possible that there was some threat to Duskrock that required her assistance. She was well known at the Duskrock Guild for being a powerful Gold Adventurer, and so if they had come to the orphanage, it was likely that they needed her help.
"She said that she was looking for someone called Abyss Watcher." The little girl answered.
Kayla froze. She looked up to the warrior above her. He stared at both Kayla and the little girl before shrugging. Grabbing his sword and placing it on his shoulder he walked towards the main building, leaving both of them behind. As soon as the Abyss Watcher disappeared into the building, presumably to head to the front door to speak with the woman from the Guild, the pressure that was her [Sense Danger] [Skill], that had been assaulting Kayla's mind since she had first approached him disappeared.
Turning to the little girl, Kayla grabbed her by the shoulders, uttering two words that left the little girl very confused.
"Catch me."
And so, like every other regular person that [Analysed] the Abyss Watcher, she blacked out.
The Abyss Watcher opened the front door of the orphanage, shocking the woman that had probably been waiting for him. He stared down at the woman, who began to stammer as she tried to speak. After about a minute of this, she finally got a hold of herself, clearing her throat as she spoke.
"Hello there mister...Abyss Watcher." She clearly seemed unsure about the words herself, yet continued anyway, "I am Aaylia, and I am from the Guild. I have come to inform you that you now qualify as an adventurer and have been awarded the...Adamantine rank." She said the last part with a gulp. "I must also say congratulations. You are now officially the first ever adventurer to start out at Adamantine. If you would please accompany me to the Guild we will give you your adventurer band."
The Abyss Watcher simply stared at the woman from the Guild, causing her to nervously shuffle her feet. He didn't really care though. So he was apparently an adventurer now. And he also happened to be the first person to start out at Adamantine rank.
Neat.

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.
