《Diary of Erica Kron》Day 162

I still feel cold, tired, and weak today, just less so.
Mest came to talk to me today, apparently after seeing what I had achieved he told everyone to leave me alone for the evening. He was amazed at what I had accomplished, apparently creating new life is almost entirely up to luck, most the time at least. He knows a surprising amount about the process, which makes sense because he studies dungeons, which are the only creatures other than origin able to reliably create new species, and even origin use a more brute force, trial and error method, but that's more their own perfectionism than anything else. He was amazed I managed to pull it off, to say the least.
The way someone goes about creating a new species is; create the body of the creature you want to create and channel mana into it until either it starts to rot or comes to life, repeat until you succeed, or more likely than not, give up in frustration. One running theme with every success is it takes something from the creator, something Mest referred to as the ‘Spark Of Life’, he believes it to be either the same as the soul or very similar. I used up twice what someone who had tried normally would have. Luckily it is something that recovers, slowly.
Mest asked about my health with a look in his eyes I only see when we discuss magic, taking notes all the while. After neither of us had more questions he ran off, saying he needed to think, while pulling out a magical item that I didn’t recognize. All in all, it took one unit of time for this discussion to happen.
As for the Ents themselves, well, they were learning. Or to be more specific, Tiddol was trying to teach them, it wasn’t going well, with them being unable to understand language and all. When she saw me I was forced to take over, not that I complained or anything, I would have done it anyway. Naturally, I started thinking of the best way to teach these creatures, to teach my children. I thought about the connection I had with them, not in an abstract way but the very real mental connection I had that let me communicate with them, and all the other plants. I could communicate simple ideas with them, like raw emotion, or colors, so naturally, i decided to try to communicate more complex ideas, like how to use vocal cords, not something you can really explain with words, but as a sensation, it worked amazingly well.

I spent the rest of the day teaching them language, and with the benefit of instant comprehension and near instant communication I got pretty far. They were far from conversation level, but they could say enough simple phrases, and actually understand them, that they could almost pass off as being conversation level.
It was mentally draining, but nowhere near the level that actually making them was.
I also got a feel for their minds in the process. They are sharp, incredibly so, I’ve never touched a more intelligent mind among all the plants I’ve communicated with, I doubt I’m even that smart. And the mana flowing through their bodies was intense, almost blinding, it was beautiful in a way something I could see with my eyes couldn’t be.
Anyway, Good Night Diary.

The Edgars
A serial killer is wreaking havoc in a small European village, and Charles Edgar believes his estranged brother to be the culprit. But little does he know that a much darker truth lies behind the bloodshed; one that will bring betrayal and destruction to the entire Edgar lineage. (This is a one-act play. A (beat) indicates a pause in the dialogue.) Also, please feel free to rip this story apart in the reviews (if you're so inclined). I really want to improve as a writer, so any criticisms are more than welcomed.

Sage of Shadows
Daniel Bishop is a thief, grifter, and part-time pickpocket. Or at least he was, until the apocalypse hit. Now he's fighting everyone and everything for survival, utilizing the strange new game-like tools he the rest of humanity received at the beginning of this mess. Will Daniel survive and thrive in this new world, or is he doomed to become just another nameless casualty of this new world? Hello, I am an aspiring author and I am using this fiction as an experiment to refine my writing style. If you have any feedback, please do not hesitate to comment, it would be much appreciated. I currently do not have an exact release schedule, but will aim for one chapter a week. Content warnings are for creative freedom. Thanks for reading my story, I hope you enjoy it!

The Dog with a Chair
As of now, this story is dropped. It was an excellent learning experience, but the quality suffered too much from me trying new things for me to continue in good concience. Thanks to anyone that read it. I'm leaving this story up as a record of my first ever attempt at publishing something I've wrote. To any new writers out there, remember that even if the stuff you write is trash, you can still learn a lot from writing it. - November 17th 2020 Guy gets involved in advocacy for civil engineering projects, then gets pulled into an interdimensional war. Third person with a focus on one main character (Stanley) with the occasional point of view from another character important to story progression. Writing style tends to shift early on as I figure out how to write (this is my first book). Still learning, hoping to improve. Current style choice is to have a focus on character dialogue/actions with interspersed internal monologue in italics. No current end is set for the story, with the primary goal of this project being to learn to express myself in a written format. Storyline is kept as consistent as practical while covering things I find interesting. Governmental systems are mentioned, but not explained in extreme detail. Sci fi elements are used to reinforce and guide plot progression as I'm able. Personal goals belonging to each character are in the process of being developed, with the hope that they will support or oppose each other in interesting ways later on. Hope you enjoy :)

Where Emus Dare
Emperor Marcus II is dead and the Empire is now ruled by the High Council, a fractious alliance of noble Lords and upstart Guildmasters, held together though sheer force of will by the common born Lord George, the Emperor's grieving lover. It is not an alliance anyone expects to last long. To save the Empire from another tiresome civil war, Sir Brand, the Duke of Orston, Dragon Slayer, all round hero and terrible poet, travels to the far away city of Sealmu Alu in an attempt to find his father, the infamous Butcher of Bergraz and persuade him to return home from his self imposed exile and take the throne. As the Empire lurches from crisis to crisis like a drunk on a ice covered road, Lady Anna, aristocratic heir to one of the noblest houses in the Empire and her companion, the eccentric Earth born Lady Kate acquire evidence that suggest the young Emperor's death may not have been the tragic accident it appeared to be. Meanwhile the two people many regard as responsible for the whole recent crisis have disappeared without trace. The beautiful Druid Healer Natalie, the only person who can open the ancient alien Gateways to Earth and her Earth born lover, Xavier are on a quest to destroy the evil Iron Brotherhood, their quest taking them to strange places of legend, Flor Ida, Amarillo and beyond. And if all this wasn't enough, the Dragons are not only back, they've taken over the internet and now seem to regard themselves as the dominant species of the planet.

Dungeon core shenanigans
Our protagonist lived his life normaly, had a PhD in physics and some problemes. Nothing too out of what can be considered common. At least until he died. After his death, he comes to himself as some breathing sphere. While still himself, he forgot a good part of his memories, he kept various parts of his knowledge, but it is obvious he was impacted mentaly. Now we follow his actions and their consequences in a brand new world where he causes mayhem and panic without meaning to. Will he stabilise and be a new kind of dungeon? Or will he just continue being a mess of thoughts and doing atrocities without realising it? I have stopped writing this story, it was one for me to train, and I have much to work on. I don't plan to resume it, but if I do, then I will rewrite it from the begining.
