《Virtuous Cultivation》44. Qi Imbuing Vase
Advertisement
"Our next item is the Qi Imbuing Vase, from the Gu clan itself!" the auctioness said cheerfully.
At this point, Mei was only half-heartedly listening. Many item entries had gone by, but they were either irrelevant to her or too expensive. She did see an axe similar to the one she wielded, a woodcutting axe; it was actually within her budget, capping at 235 Jade.
While she was interested in it, how much use was it going to be of? From the looks of it, her sect was so peaceful that she didn't need a strong weapon anyway... she really didn't want to spend forever working to pay off a debt for something she would rarely use.
The projection of a bulbous vase appeared, standing on a black pedestal of sorts. The vase was made of green jade with vague hints of blue, the outside covered in engravings of hundreds of plants.
"These were originally designed to hold souls or grow special herbs, but since then, cultivators have used them for countless things!" Yu Yan said. "Let me give a demonstration."
She took out a piece of bluish ore and held it before the mouth. Despite it being twice the diameter of the small mouth, it easily fit, using the mechanics storage artefacts used.
The auctioness focused, making a powerful aura flow from her.
"Hah!"
She focused, making a huge amount of qi rush into the jar. The jar began to glow faintly, marks of blue tracing its engravings, which then turned silver after a few moments and finally, gold!
Yu Yan reached her hand into the vase and took out the ore, making the vase return to normal. The ore now shone with a brilliant violet hue and had a powerful aura.
"These vases collect qi naturally on their own, slowly imbuing it into anything that's put inside. But if you're impatient, you can forcefully inject huge amounts of qi into it, though the results won't be as good. The vases will turn gold when they can't hold any more qi."

She took out a seed, followed by a pill, a sword and a mooncake. All of them were seething with qi, clearly the result of being put in the vase. Mei widened her eyes. That meant if she bought stuff and put it inside, they would become way better just by leaving them alone and waiting!
"We have 10 of these vases, so the top 10 bidders will all get a jar of their own! The bid starts at 120 Jade!"
Beside the vase's projection, 10 rows of 150 appeared. Wait, so cheap? Her eyes lit up. She was definitely going to get one of these!
As the price slowly climbed, Mei nervously put her finger to the stone tablet before her, the device used to place bids.
2... 5... 0... (兩百五十) Mei carefully wrote. The tablet flashed a faint red, before flashing a row of text.
"Indecipherable! Please try again."
What?! She knew her handwriting wasn't the best, but it wasn't that bad! Stupid stone tablet...
She tried yet again, but yet again:
"Indecipherable!"
Filled with frustration, Mei decided to try to write as slowly and straightly as possible on it. She even swapped the "two" (兩) for 2 (二) to make it easier to write.
Just as she was about to activate it after writing the words, she realised the bottom line of 2 (二) was a bit... crooked. She didn't want a repeat of "stupid stone tablet", so she carefully drew a line over the bottom line. Better! The line now looked a bit fat, but that was a very clear 2 (二).
"Your bid of 350 (三百五十) has been put up!"
...
WHAT?!
How the heck does that look like 3 (三)?! It couldn't read her handwriting earlier, but now it registered those two lines that were pretty much overlapping as 2 separate lines? What?!

Look up at how her bid of 350 was at the top of the list with 260 at 2nd place, Mei was filled with grievances.
Eventually, her bid did drop to the 4th place, but even so, it was still painful. Dammit... she could have won with just 290 as her bid...
She turned to stare at her borrowed pouch, sighing. She could practically see the Jade flying away with little wings. Angrily, she hit the stone tablet.
Ow! Bad idea.
Now her hand really hurt. And the tablet was unharmed.
Mei sulked, closing her eyes, no longer wanting to watch the auction. Not like she was going to buy anything else anyway... Eventually, she drifted off.
A tremendous roar made torrents of air rush through the hall.
Mei woke up with a start, confused. She groggily looked up to see what was going on, then widened her eyes in shock. A massive cage around 100 metres wide floated in the air, a massive blue dragon trapped within!
The cage was too small for the dragon, forcing its serpentine body to be coiled up in a painful fashion where it couldn't move an inch. There was so little space, its whiskers, horns, and mane jutted out from the gaps in the metal. It's eyes were ablaze with hatred and killing intent.
"For centuries, I, Tian Di have protected and nurtured the Myriad Beast Sect! Without me, they would be nothing but a small sect, destined to be forgotten, worthless!" the dragon roared. "And what have they done? Now that they're in debt, they have caged me up as nothing but a slave to be sold!"
"If you wish to enslave me, so be it! But I must implore of you to use my power to enact vengeance on those ingrates! Otherwise-"
"Silence!"
It was a powerful bellow, full of authority, echoing through the entire hall several times. Mei could hardly believe the cheerful Yu Yan had now taken on such a fierce demeanour.
A restriction in the cage seemed to activate, silencing the dragon.
"I apologise for that incident. We have had... difficulties in silencing that dragon. There isn't a need to take heed to anything it says." the Yu Yan said, the cheerful look wiped from her face.
From the side, an emaciated old woman bound in chains was bought next to her. Her eyes were closed, and from the looks of it, she had long since given up.
"The dragon has a soul contract with this woman, an elder from the Myriad Beast Sect, Suo Ran. As long as you keep her hostage, the dragon would not dare to oppose your commands."
"The starting bid will be 1,000,000 Jade."
Mei was flabbergasted. How did things escalate so much while she was sleeping?

Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.

NEVER SPLIT THE PARTY: The Adventures of The Creeping Bam (BOOK TWO: One Cold Trail)
After their fateful misadventure in the mountainous Norther Reaches of RUNDAO, a dark new threat to all of RUNDAO has been revealed to the mercenary band of THE CREEPING BAM and their newest member, half-orc bandit SHAYLINE SWIFT-KILL. Returning their hard-won cargo to THE SILVER ORDER in their city stronghold in BAVAT, they find their well-deserved rest will have to rest – half-elf wizard GAEL FOXTAIL’s father has disappeared while performing an investigation in the coastal city of UNTERMER, and it’s up to our motley crew to find him. As a son of Untermer, wily bakaneko thief ART OF SHADOWS is the perfect choice to lead the way, but he has ghosts of his own to face as their investigation brings them into the orbit of the THIEVES GUILD. But there are daker forces at work here, and as they uncover a dark conspiracy and form an uneasy alliance with a trio of tough sellswords with their own stake in the game, led by dwarven warrior THELGAEWYNN FROSTFORGE, the Creeping Bam begin to suspect this may be connected to that unfinished business they started back up north … This is a love letter and homage to the high-fantasy worlds of the tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder and Warhammer and the sword & sorcery cinema and literature I fell in love with as a kid growing up in the 80s, from Robert E. Howard’s Conan the Barbarian (and the awesome Schwarzenegger movie, STILL my favourite fantasy film EVER), The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit and Ron Howard and George Lucas’ Willow, to the more grown-up and edgy worlds of grimdark masters George RR Martin and (my all-time favourite) Joe Abercrombie, as well as a BIG DOLLOP of Terry Pratchett’s immortal Discworld series. IMPORTANT: This story contains material which some readers may consider to be mature, such as battle violence, some strong language and occasional mild sexual scenes. If this is not your kind of thing, this story is not for you. I am also serializing this story on Tumblr, Wattpad, Quotev and Sweek.

"I don't know who you think you are coming here, and acting like you don't care about anything. Now listen here Princess, because I'm not going to repeat myself. Here's a couple of rules that I'd like to enlighten upon you. Number one, you do not talk back to me. And two, you don't mess with me or the rules," his breath fans my face and I close my eyes. The proximity between us was terrifying. "I've dealt with many bitches like you, so I suggest that you follow those rules unless you want to end up like them," - he leans in. His mouth lingers near my ear, "used."... "... You might think that you run this place, but you do not run me. Understand? And the sooner you understand that, the better it'll be for the both of us," I warn staring right into his eyes before walking away. I was more than amused by his dumbfounded expression. I stop, and turn back around, facing him, "And one piece of advice, know what you're fishing for before you start fishing. What if you find a shark and it reels you in, instead?"⇒Highest rank: 1 in Chicklit on 01.08.16
