《The Floating Dungeon》Chapter 38

Amy watched as the group passed back through the portal, out of the iceberg, and back towards the ship they had originally come from. When the adventuring group was fully out of her territory, it was dark, and it made her realize something. Her sub-dimension was always bright. Even if there was no sun representation in it, it was always bright out; there was no change between light and darkness. This made Amy want to try to add this day and night cycle to the dimension.

She has changed things within the sub-dimension, but not the actual dimension itself. Amy tried using the method that she has used for almost everything, mana strings, to do this. It did not work. She tried it repeatedly using the same method in hopes that it would eventually work, but alas, it did not.

In frustration, Amy growled out and closed her eyes. She took a couple of deep breaths to calm down. When she did this, she started going into a deep trance. A trance that made her feel even everything within the sub-dimension. In her mind, she reached out to touch the top of the dimension, and she started thinking about the day and night cycle of Earth. About how the sun rises, bringing light, the movement, the moon and stars, the darkness, then back again to the daytime.

As she was thinking about this, the dimension started to shift, and the light became darker. When Amy finally came out of the trance and opened her eyes, the dimension changed. Unlike the bright, middle-of-the-day lightness that normally brightened, the dimension was now dark. It was now night in the dimension, with enough stars to make it bright enough to just be able to see their immediate surroundings.

Amy studied this new background for the dimension. She noticed that the little balls of light that she assumed represented stars were moving very slowly to the North. So she assumed that the difference in nighttime and daytime would slowly move to one or the other just like it would on Earth. And right now, the dimension showed that it was nighttime, though how long it would stay like that she did not know, but Amy was happy that there was a cycle between nighttime and daytime.

With being able to implement a daytime and nighttime cycle, she turned her attention to the offerings she had been given. It was a good time to do this as there probably will not be anybody crossing over to the second floor for a while. So she had time to figure out what she wanted to do, make any changes, create and design in relative peace.

She started first with the island. When Amy originally made the floating mangrove island, she used dirt from the island, creating a divot into the island's ground. She had plans for this divot.

Amy wanted to make it deeper and make it into something of a deep hole. But, by doing this, it would also allow her to create more challenging terrain. So she dug the hole right in the middle of the island, deep enough until she reached stone before she stopped. Before she added ice to the hole, Amy reinforced the walls so that the dirt would not collapse when water was added.

The idea that she had was to create ice using ice mana, which is freshwater, then remove the strings of ice mana. Hopefully, it would cause the ice to either melt fully or collapse. So, with a string of ice mana, she filled the hole all the way up to the top of the hole. After the ice formed, Amy started withdrawing the ice mana string. When she fully took out the ice mana string, the ice started to melt. Once it was already halfway melted, the process slowed, but she was happy with the result and left it to continue melting.

Amy had a plan for the island, at least regarding the trees. She wanted to distinguish the actual island from the mangrove island at this stage, so she wasn't planning to use any mangrove trees on the island. The island was two metres by two metres, so she did not have a lot of space to work with, but she already knew what she wanted to do with it.

One of the seeds that she collected, the yellow birch, would work well along the island's edge. So she took the seed, planted it, and grew it enough to produce offspring. Amy did this again and again until about a third of the available area for trees to grow was taken up. The yellow birch trees were tall trees with pieces of bark-like paper and yellow-coloured leaves.

The other tree that she had that she wanted to incorporate was the walking palm tree. She didn't want too many of these trees to be on the island due to the size of the island. With that, she took the walking palm seed, planted it, and grew it until it could produce seeds. She took three of those seeds, planted them along the available spots on the island and grew them until they were mature.

The trees planted and growing made Amy happy to see the island becoming populated, but it was not done. Her idea for this island and the floating island is to have the floating one appear more tropical in nature, while the island would look more like a forest. Though right now, both would have similar plants living on the two islands as she did not have a lot of variety to choose from.

On the island, she placed the strand of hanging moss onto one of the trees and grew it to drape down towards the ground. Amy continued by placing pieces of the moss throughout the trees and growing them so that they were long and draped.

She also grew the spiral orchid seed with the moss and placed the orchids throughout the island.

Amy took a step back and looked at the little environment that she had created. It was a bit sparse in the different types of plants, but it was good enough for now. With all of the plants on the island, she decided to incorporate the transparent dart frogs from the eggs she received. Once the frogs hatched, she quickly increased their population and let them roam free on the island. Since they were the only animals on the island, Amy decided to transplant some of the rain drop dragonflies from the floating island over to the island.

With Amy being happy with the outcome of the island, she turned her attention to the floating island. She transplanted one of the orchids over before she grew more from the seeds. Another plant that she wanted to add to the mangrove floating is the hanging pitcher plant. With there being a limited amount of soil, Amy wanted to limit the number of plants that need to live on the ground.

Amy placed the flowering praying mantis egg sack near a cluster of orchids and hatched them. She grew them and quickly got them to reproduce enough to populate the floating island. The flowering praying mantis really did look like a flower, and it quickly shifted its original colouring to match the light blue and white orchids.

With both islands done, Amy went back to her usual routine of trying to lure things into her territory, experimenting and thinking of new things that she could do with her dungeon and iceberg.
