The secretary was assisting me. I was heading back to the inn section of the gild.
“We have rooms for adventurers, but you will have to pay for it. It will be free for you as only you would reach rank D or above. You will start with G rank.” “Can you tell me the differences between ranks? I mean how much stronger is every rank compared to rank lower.” “Ranks from G to A are humans capabilities. We have higher ranks, but it is highly unlikely that a human would be marked as A+. The guild leader in his best days was A+. He is a living legend. But answering your question G rank quests are mostly easy tasks that you can finish within one day, or even a couple hours – mostly finding. Those are also quests that are pretty repetitive like finding minerals or herbs. F are pretty same you just need some more time to complete them, they may also have low risk like wild animals or encountering bandit. E – here fun begins, scouting and evaluation of forests and caves near villages, also termination of bit more violent animals and monsters. D – here is what we call an actual adventuring low risk dungeon rades. C and above are usually team quests. Usually when you would like to do D and lower quests, you are free to go by yourself, while C needs three or more C rank adventurers… we will not force you to do so, but we will neither send anyone to look for your corps. A and A+ quests… are legendary beast termination. Like intelligent, violent dragons. We form raid of 24 A rank and above adventurers and send them to those suicidal missions.” “You said guild master was A+… I heard that the strongest human currently living is a woman, would you mind telling me how strong he is compared to…” “If that wench is number 1, then Jeremy must be 0. Listen here kid, this whole ranking is taking into consideration only active soldiers, mercenaries, criminals and adventurers. Jeremy had bin sitting behind a desk for the past 20 years… yet he still trains his body every evening. He could take the top 5 all by himself at once… you said that, respect an old man in a profession that men die young in. And as you said you wish to train with him… oh boy, you may be a myth rank beast, but I already feel sorry for you sparing with Dragon Slayer Jericho. He doesn’t know what holding back means, and we use training with him as a form of punishment.”

She smiled. I shivered. We walked. End of the story. Soon we reached the hall that previously was shifted into a small battlefield. And it was clean. Flawlessly clean. At the very same time the door opened and a man walk in carrying a table and put it in the place of destroyed one.
“Listen now you maggots, this one is here, from now onwards, he will be your new comrade. His name is Zariel, he is a multitask magician with the Senate of Magic recommendation. To answer a question you probably wish to ask, he earned that recommendation by himself, he is not part of a noble family and was never studied in the Academy, so stop grinning Jacob, or I will help you. Also…” those words were told to me but loudly enough for everyone to hear “… I have said many rude words toward you, which were far from the truth. Please forgive this old lady her arrogance.”
She bowed a little and whispered to my ear
“We better hide your identity for some time, till you make some friends… have fun among us, I can ensure you that either you will have fun here, or you will never know fun in your whole life.” And for the very end she yelled to everyone “Now, show our fellow newbie what does it takes to be an adventurers, ask them about everything that would confuse you, and if they would not answer, or would be to rude… just report them back to me” She smiled for the very last time, and walked back to the office section.
I was left in the middle of the room. I tried all my best to not act awkward, tried to make the first move, say hello… it was unnecessary. They made the first moves.
A huge arm landed over my shoulder in a friendly, manly hug.
“So, your name is Zariel? Bwahaha! Sorry, but it sounds like a name for the final boss of an undead dungeon! Mwahaha! Names Anatoly! C rank. Tank. If you would need company to beer, music or harder quests, ask right away!” For the very end he patted me on the back, with strength that almost knocked me down “Stop bulling the rookie! Damned idiot, even his brain is muscle.” The orc raider came to say hello “I am Marika - fairy… have to ask, are you a druid? You have really nice aura around you… so fresh and wild… almost like home…” She looked a bit troubled, as if she wanted to ask for something more “I am, but I highly doubt we came from the same place… is something bothering you?” “That stupid midget is homesick.” The orc said from the corner “She is becoming completely insane near every blade of grass she walkes across, clinging to every tree as to some kind of lover. If she says you have a “nice aura” she either wants you to pet her, hug her, or hump her.”

Fairy’s became face red, more from anger than embarrassment.
“…Mrogul… it is funny how you joke from someone sexuality, as only thing that excites you is some gutted pig. If you only could tell what he is doing every time we walk to the dungeon… he can’t simply kill a thing. He needs to cut open its belly, pull the guts out, then use it as some kind of scarf while moaning like a moose during mating season.” “Listen to me, you little flying fuck, joke one more time from our war rituals and next time I would be entering the dungeon, I shall use you as the sacrifice…” “Ritual? Dancing covered in…”
As I wanted to avoid another battle that was about to begin, I covered the mouth of fairy with my palm, used another hand to pet her little head, while trying to make conversation with the orc.
“Could you perhaps, one day, tell me more about your culture? I am really interested in every kind of ritual, as magical as spiritual, and I simply can’t let such an opportunity to improve my knowledge pass me.” “Are you making fun of me?” Mrogul asked not completely sure what my intentions were. “No, I am serious. Once, by myself, I made a ritual that helped me a lot. I used a totem made of branches and animals bones as the catalyst… maybe I will tell you the whole story sometime… maybe with a cup of beer? “Beer?” Anatoly’s head popped up out of nowhere. “We also call him the Genie… if you would open a bottle he is about to show up in three seconds… “ Orc whispered to me. “Isn’t it a bit too early for a beer?” I asked humorously “In that case beer and bacon?” Anatoly didn’t want to let it go “Maybe later? I want to ask some quests, you know, one needs money to buy a beer” “You are a rookie, as good seniors we are obligated to get you drunk for the first time at our expense! But I get it! It is a good spirit! Nothing taste as good as beer after a day of good, hard work! But… you are G rank… I am not going to help you with your quests… those are… boring… But if you would encounter some wyvern… don’t you dare to finish it without calling me to have fun too! MWAHAHA!” Aaaand he vanished again. “F..fear not! G ranks quests that we have now are mostly herb gathering, I may show you a few places just outside of town where you can find some of them, those are really nice places I often used to relax and rest… I am sure you will like it too!” The fairy was a bit… overenthusiastic. “I would be really grateful for your company.” “Great! Go pick a quest! I will be waiting outside!”
Cheerful the girl ran away from the guild. In that moment a cloaked men approached me.
“Marika, as a fairy, is deeply connected with nature. It is hard for her to be separated from the source of her powers, so please could you bear her presence for two more days? She will leave for a dungeon raid soon… the cave one, and who knows how many days is she is going to spend there… By the way, I am Loki. D rank rogue. Try to rank up quickly; I could really use the help of a magician. Oh, and as nobody showed you where the quest board is…”
He pointed at something that I at first took for a wall. Because it was a wall of the guild, covered in hundreds of quests wall of the guild
“Calling it a “board” is a bit…” “I know” Loki smiled. I couldn’t tell much about his appearance. Only green eyes and bit of jet black hair could be seen under his hood. “Now, if there is something that Marika hates as much as a certain orc… that would be waiting.”
I thanked him with a nod and walked to the “board” It was divided into sections, so the task of looking for suitable job didn’t took me much time…

Witchbone: The Goblins Winter
Themes found in these stories include friendship, found family, defying negative expectations, trying to figure out how to be a force for good in your corner of the world, doing heroic things even if you don't look or feel like a hero, and that being different isn't necessarily fatal. Summary: A spell of arctic weather. A mysterious death. The reading of a will. Strange tracks in the snow. Eleven-year-old Danny Hallow accepts his life, such as it is. His father is dead, his mother left years ago. His three Keepers are the only people aware of Danny's erratic and not-very-impressive psychic abilities. He has no friends, he's been suspended from school, and he's responsible for the life of a small brown bat that's ended up in his care. When Danny's estranged Uncle Enoch dies under mysterious circumstances, he and his Keepers are called to the town of Eddystone, New Hampshire for the reading of the man's will. Traveling four hundred miles from his dreaded hometown to attend, Danny is happy to get away, possibly inherit something interesting- and maybe find out more about his family while he's there. Arriving at the crumbling family estate of Gnomewood Home, he finds it to be hauntingly familiar, a bit creepy, oddly comforting, and possibly alive. When his uncle's will reveals that he's inherited Gnomewood and everything in it, he's determined to stay and make a happier life for himself in Eddystone, somehow. But at Gnomewood, he finds more questions than answers to his family's secrets. Disturbing old memories come to him in dreams. His psychic abilities begin to grow stronger, and as a result he becomes aware that a horde of cryptic creatures are plaguing the town of Eddystone, seemingly drawn out by the spell of an unusually frigid February. Toothy little goblins that are sneaky, vicious, and hungry. Goblins that take a particular interest in Danny. Will the emergence of the alien, and potentially dangerous, power he's inherited from his peculiar family tree help Danny survive the goblin infested winter, inadvisable attempts to befriend a terrifying boy with silver eyes, and a new school? Only if he learns to control them before they put him and everyone around him in danger. Before they convince some people that he should never have been allowed to exist at all. Before he becomes just another twisted tale in his family's bizarre history, kept hidden for centuries within the ivy-covered walls of Gnomewood Home.
