《The Great Conqueror》Chapter 5 - His Departure

After Wesley reemerged out of his Dark Warp into his room. He immediately sat on his bed crossed legged with his eyes closed and started refining to restore his used up mana, after all he did invoke Dark Warp twice in a matter of minutes and was only left with a third of his mana.
Almost an hour passes before Wesley is done refining. He then immediately invokes his Dark Dimension and withdraws the Sword, dagger and book he received from old man Rale. The thing he was interested in most was the book so he set aside the sword and the dagger and started probing the book.
This book had a dark cover just like the other books he received from Rale, only this book was a little thicker and more personal looking than the other ones, it was almost like a journal. Opening the book to the inside cover Wesley saw the title which was written by hand and read [Record of Darkness]. The handwritten title confirmed Wesley's suspicion that this book was in fact a journal, which made him wonder if it was written by Rale or someone else.
The first page of the book was a short contained a short introduction which was also handwritten. It read [ The ways of Darkness are infinite, each child of the night has his own personal understanding, practice and application. I write this book to share with others like me who train in Darkness so that they also share it with others. You might not understand what is written here or you might not wish to share your techniques, but his book was made by those who train in Darkness so that their knowledge and names would survive the eternal darkness of time].
Having read the first excerpt of the book, Wesley's heart shook. he instantly understood the value of this book. This books contained the vast knowledge of numerous masters from long ago. Each of their techniques were priceless in their hearts yet here he is holding a collection of them in his hand.
Excited at the prospects of gaining such powerful techniques, Wesley immediately started reading. For the next few days Wesley didn’t leave his room except for food, he kept reading and reading and pondering the mysteries of the techniques described in the book. These techniques were extremely powerful, some were capable of sacking entire cities, while others were capable of blocking the sun.
Unfortunately for Wesley, He could not comprehend exactly how the techniques worked. Although a lot of master wrote their techniques on this book, they only wrote the most basic descriptions and some basic explanations, not even touching on the mechanics or mysteries of each techniques. Wesley felt somewhat dejected at the idea of obtaining such a treasure but being unable to use it. But he wasn't disheartened, even though he couldn't use these techniques, he realized that Dark magic is vast and diverse. Finally, having read the book cover to cover a ew times, Wesley put it away and set his eyes on the sword and dagger.

The sword and dagger were both pitch black as if they were made from obsidian, however, unlike obsidian they didn’t give off a shiny luster rather they seemed to absorb light. The sword unlike regular swords had a double edge and a short leather bound hilt. What caught Wesley attention, however, was that despite the fact that both the sword and dagger seemed to have been made from the same material and were designed the same way, the dagger gave off a dark, bloodchiling aura, that caused all that saw to feel deep dread.
While looking over the dagger curiously, Wesley heard a sudden knock from the his door. Wesley almost instantly stored the sword and dagger in his Dark Dimension, and canceled out his Dark Globe. This was a habit that Wesley picked up after years of practice, so every time he was in his room he would invoke his Dark Globe.
Getting up from his bed Wesley opened the door only to find a little servant girl in front of his room, looking around in a daze.
"Yes?"
Wesley was curious why this little girl would seek him out, after all he rarely ever got interrupted. The little servant girl seemed to have perked up at his word and was brought back from her dazed. She spoke in a small voice:
"Sorry, uhm, the king, h.....he is calling you to the study"
Wesley was rather amused by her tone of speech, it was almost as if she has never done this before, so he wanted to tease her a little, but he restrained himself since the meeting Rale hinted at days ago was finally here.
"I see, Excuse me then"
Wesley immediately headed towards the King's study, it wasn't too far away, but Wesley intentionally walked slow thinking about why the King would require his attendance. Many thoughts popped up in his head, but he eventually ran out of guesses and decided to just hear it from the king himself.
When Wesley reached the study, he knocked respectfully before entering. The king was sitting behind a desk stacked with book, letchers and papers and was staring at some paper, to the left side of the room, little Delan was reading a book while sitting in a small chair near the window of the study. Having noticed Wesley walk in, Delan's face lit up and he started waving to him in very childlike manner, seeing this Wesley flashed him a small wink and smile then turned towards the King who was now staring at him.
"Come in Wesley"
"You’ve called for me, father"
"Yes, I have some news for you. Since you’ve just turned ten, you are now old enough to attend the Four Moons Royal Academy."
Wesley was startled, he has heard about the Four Moons Royal Academy before, and although most people knew it as an elite school reserved for the nobility of the four kingdoms, it was still beneath his status as a prince. He instantly recognized that this was essentially an exile, and his face showed his confusion. He couldn’t understand why his father would send him to such a faraway place when he could learn the same things and more from his current tutors, so he asked in a small voice:

"But father, such a school is ..........."
Before he can even finish his sentence, Edmund raised his hand to stop him from continuing and said:
"The decision has been made Wesley. You will leave for Blackreach city in a week"
Wesley regained his calm and started thinking about how his master had known this would happen, meaning that he must have had something to do with it. Wesley simply nodded his head and said:
"Understood father"
"Excellent, furthermore, you won't be assigned an escort to take you to Blackreach county since it is a neutral area so you will have to go there on your own"
Wesley was surprised at his father's decision. Not being given an escort since they cant enter Blackreach county because of its neutrality is not a good excuse at all, after all there is at least four hundred miles between Holt Castle, which is one of the southernmost cities of the Ject Kingdom, and the borders of Blackreach county, so there shouldn’t be any problem with getting him an escort until the border. But Wesley, not understanding his father's peculiar behavior kept his thoughts to himself, and replied with a simple:
"Yes father"
"Good, now go back and prepare what you need, you will leave in one weeks time. It shouldn’t take you more two weeks to get to Blackreach city, and the entrance examination is in a month's time"
"Understood father. I will take my leave"
Wesley politely bowed then headed out of the room. As he was about to go out, he noticed the distressed look on little Delan's face, and he shot him an apologetic smile, then simply left the study and headed back to his room.
After reaching his room, Wesley simply locked the room and went back to analyzing the strange dagger he got from Rale. He continued fiddling with the dagger until the evening. Then he immediately invoked his Dark Warp and appeared in the West Tower. Wesley immediately greeted his master and before he could ask about what happened earlier Rale spoke first:
"Have you spoken to the king yet"
"Yes master" answered Wesley after a moment's pause.
"Good, I assume you want to know if I had something to do with it"
"Yes master"
"I was the one who asked young Edmund to send you to the Four Moons Royal Academy. do you know why?"
"No master" Wesley confirmed his suspicion that old man Rale had something to do with the King's decision, but he honestly had no idea why.
"It is because you are too inexperienced. You have only known this place, but the world is wide and only those who are tempered through hardships of reality become strong"
Wesley was not too surprised, he had always felt that his life in the Royal palace was too lax, but he though he would just go on a long trip when he was older, still he replaid:
"Understood Master"
"Now, I want to talk to you about the [Record of Darkness], have you finished reading it yet"
"I have master"
"Good. This book is a record of the techniques of Darkness, so even if you can't understand them you must study them.
"Yes master"
"Also if you meet another Dark Mage in your time out, if he's a friend, update each other's records and if he's an enemy kill him and claim his record. Though I doubt you will meet other Dark mages"
"Understood master" Wesley was thinking about the possibility of meeting other mages and perhaps obtaining their records.
"Finally, you must make sure you remember one thing while you're out there, no one is supposed to learn about your magic"
"Yes master"
"And if they by some chance learn about your magic?"
"Then they will die" Wesley answered his voice resolute, with a cold light flashing in his eyes.
"Good. Now go, you have a lot to prepare" Rale seemed satisfied by his answer so he opened up a book and looked down.
"Understood master, but........." Wesley had a hint of hesitation in his voice which captured Rale's attention who looked up with an amused look on his face.
"What is it?"
"About the dagger...."
"Ho, it seems you have discovered something about my gift, however, am afraid I can't tell you much about it. You'll have to discover its mysteries on your own" Rale answered in an amused voice as he grinned at Wesley.
Wesley instantly knew that there was something special about that dagger, but he didn’t press the issue any further, and replied with a short:
"Yes master, then I'll take my leave"
Wesley invoked his Dark Warp and seconds later walked out of the shadow in his room, and started to reorganize his thoughts about all the things that happened.

A week later, a young man stood at the northern gate of Holt Castle. He is around five feet tall wearing a dark shirt with dark pants, and a dark sheathed sword hanging from his right hip, his blue, shoulder length, hair fluttering in the wind as he stared forward into the horizon.
This was the first time Wesley had ever set foot outside of Holt Castle. In his heart a storm of emotion waged, as he looked into the far horizon, his eyes shining with excitement, and his body trembling at the thought of the adventures that await him.

Someday, he might even – hatch? “CHEEP!?” Things to Know: -Cheep!? Will release on a minimum weekly schedule. -After a backlog of chapters, posting will slow, but in the interim you can expect a chapter a day up until roughly 25 chapters. -This story at times will potentially carry some heavy moments, but the tone is intended to be lighter overall. -There are invisible game-like elements in this story, but nothing so concrete as a dedicated gamelit novel. -I personally have some issues with anxiety, so I may or may not interact with the community a lot. I'll try if anyone has questions, but I can't guarantee that it'll be consistent. -MC is a non-human lead, and will never actually become human. Romance will potentially happen between side-characters, but not with the MC. -MC IS NOT THE ONLY VIEW POINT. I have to put that out there because people sometimes hate alternate PoV's in a story. None of them will be filler, and they'll be there only to give a little bit more nuance and meaning to the world that the MC has stepped in, or is about to be imminently important. I'll try to keep them down, but this also helps to prevent me from burning out getting trapped in one view. -Most of all, I hope that this story is enjoyable to you, and that you have a great time reading it! -Written by Michael Adams, Cowritten/Edited by Summer Kent
