《A Modern Day Demon King》* Chapter 15 – The Visit

With relief, Reyn went home after the Monday workday. After removing her work clothes, Reyn made a simple vegetable curry with rice and put chocolate muffins into the oven to bake for dessert. Eating her delicious Indian style curry, Reyn suddenly hears a doorbell to her surprise.
Reyn frowns at being interrupted at dinner especially given that she had only taken one bite out of her warm dinner. Reyn had half a mind to ignore the doorbell until the doorbell rang again. With a sigh, Reyn climbs to her feet and goes to see who it is. Through the peephole, Reyn sees the figure of two men she wasn’t familiar with.
With care, Reyn opens the door as Detective Mǎ flashes his badge and says, “My apologies on disturbing you at this hour, Miss Mephistopheles, but we just have some questions for you if it is alright with you?”
Reyn glances at the senior and sterner faced detective. Seeing her glance, Detective Mǎ says, “And this is my senior companion, Detective Guō.”
Reyn moves to the side and politely says, “Please come in. I hope you don’t mind if I finish eating my dinner, while you ask your questions?”
“No, not at all,” Detective Mǎ answered back as they entered the apartment and Reyn closed the door after them.
“You don’t need to remove your shoe's detectives,” Reyn replied as she heads past them into the kitchen area. The Detectives follow her as Reyn takes a seat at the counter while Detective Mǎ takes a seat across from her and Detective Guō remains standing nearby observing the scene.
“I’m sorry to ask this, but Miss Hú Jiao, a co-worker of yours claims that you were in the alleyway the night of the incident. Could you tell us where you were between the hours of eleven and midnight of last Saturday night?” Detective Mǎ pointedly asked as Detective Guō intently watches her face for any reaction.

Reyn sighs and says, “I was hungry and went out for food. I went and bought a rice burger with several other items from that fast food chain that makes the rice burgers. Do you know the food chain I’m talking about?”
Detective Mǎ glances at Detective Guō at the reply. That was exactly what they had found on the CCTV cameras. But there was something about the situation that bothered his partner, Detective Guō. It wasn’t much it’s just that there was a gap between spotting her figure on the CCTV cameras. Though just around the next street corner Miss Mephistopheles was out of sight for more than ten minutes. It was possible she was on her phone and leaned against the wall to talk, but something just fell off about the time frame.
“And might you have any idea, why Miss Hú Jiao would claim that you were?” Detective Mǎ further inquired.
Reyn sighs as she puts her spoon down giving up on eating in the meantime. “Detective Mǎ, did Miss Hú Jiao tell you that I was just transferred to this branch?” Detective Mǎ blinks in surprise and nods his head in reply.
“Well, in that case, not only I am the newly transferred senior accountant into a department and a Usonian woman at that. Most of the females on the floor don’t like me and that dislike extends to some of my male co-workers who are not only antiquated in their thoughts but are members of the good old boy’s club. My co-workers dislike the fact that I am in a more senior position than them at work, but they hate even more the fact I am a female even more. In which case, Detective Mǎ, there is no shortage of people who dislike me,” Reyn drily stated.

Detective Mǎ is taken back at the honest reply as Detective Guō says, “Do you have any proof of your claims?”
Reyn rolls her eyes and goes to the kitchen drawer. With ease, Reyn drops one or two hate letters but mostly promiscuous pictures of her face photoshopped on some kinky pictures. Detective Guō glances through the evidence as Detective Mǎ frowns and says, “And why haven’t you reported the harassment?”
“I’m trying to not stick out even more than I already am, Detective. I know how these things go, the newbie always gets harassed until he or she in my case gets accepted. I’d be making more enemies if I reported it to my boss or the authorities. Eventually, it’ll stop all on its own and it mostly already has,” Reyn honestly replied.
Detective Mǎ is at a loss and is unable to think up of an appropriate reply. However, luckily, Detective Guō comes to the rescue by asking, “Was Miss Hú Jiao, one of your fiercer harassers?”
“Not in the sense that you would think,” Reyn replied.
“In what sense then?” Detective Guō further inquired.
“The female clerics mostly ignored me, which wasn’t a problem in itself except they’re in charge of printing and other important paper duties. I wouldn’t receive a needed work report, or I would be given the wrong report, or one page would be missing, etc. There was always something wrong with the paperwork which was starting to affect my work until I had a word with them,” Reyn answered.
“And what did you say to them?” Detective Guō pointedly asked.
“I told them that I was a senior level accountant and outranked them. And if they continued to do, I would make an enemy of out of them by going to the Chief and report them,” Reyn drily stated.
“And that is all?” Detective Guō further probed.
“Yes, you can check with the female clerics and incidentally, I spoke to them just this past Friday,” Reyn plainly stated.
The two stared at other for a moment, before Detective Guō glances away first. Seeing the underhand gesture, Detective Mǎ climbs to his feet and says, “That will be all, Miss Mephistopheles and thank you for your cooperation in answering our questions.”
Reyn cheerfully sees the deceives out before happily returning to her meal without a care in the world. After all, it wasn’t as though they had any proof to state otherwise. Because if they had they would have already charged her. But it was interesting to note that the older detectives sensed something was wrong. “I guess, there are still some humans who can sense the Demon side of me,” Reyn mused privately to herself as she ate. But it was no reason to be concerned because most modern humans didn’t believe in demons.

8 252Small Chests Are Fine Too
It is an undeniable fact that good things come in small packages. More often than not, it is necessary to trim the fat in order to bring what really matters to the forefront. Having extra bulk may seem like a good idea, but in reality it is merely a crutch that will one day become a hindrance, as it is no substitute for personality nor ability. Indeed, often times it is the small things in life that brighten up our daily lives and constantly remind us exactly why we do the things we do. However, it is important to keep an open mind, for while bigger is not always better, there are also times when it is. This holds especially true when it comes to hopes and dreams, which have been known to require a suitably large container from time to time. And while dreaming big could potentially lead to massive dissapointment, one will never truly reach fulfilment if they think too small. A truth that one small woman with meager aspirations is about to find out. DISCLAIMER: This is a spin-off/side story of my main series, Everybody Loves Large Chests, which is also mandatory reading to understand this one. It runs parallel to the main plot, branching off from the chapter titled Upheaval 2, so there will be spoilers for anyone who hasn't reached that point.
