《A Modern Day Demon King》* Chapter 3 – End of the Day Ⅱ

Elsewhere in an entirely different country, a thin, office worker leaves the office at 11:32 p.m. A large crash startles the office worker as he glances around in the dark hallway. Uneasy, the office worker makes his way to the source of the sound and hears a large thump beyond a semi-open office door.
Rather wary, the office worker peeks through the crack in the doorway to see the horrifying red painted scene before him. Unable to process the gruesome scene, the office worker stomach lurches uneasily. Keeping the bile down, the office worker scrambles backward and rushes towards the men’s bathroom.
The office worker staggers to the bathroom sink and begins to boisterously heave. Painful tears pour down his face at the force of the gut-wrenching sounds that are filled with something more than just nausea. With shaky gasps, the office worker tries to grab the sink handle as his fingers shake forcefully in a clenched manner. With fumbling fingers, the office worker finally manages to wrap its hand around the handle and turn it open.
An empty ache grows in the pit of the office worker’s stomach as his limbs shake with fear and shock. His knees give out unexpectedly and the office worker slides roughly onto the bathroom tile floor. The office worker’s teeth clatter noisily as he pulls his knees to himself in a child’s attempt to comfort himself all the while tears continue to pour down his face.
The office worker mumbles incoherently to himself, “I didn’t see anything. Must go home now.” And as if fueled by those sudden words, the office worker climbs to his feet. The office worker cautiously pauses at the door and listens for any sounds of movement outside. Convinced, he as alone, the office worker slowly opens the bathroom door and peeks into the darkened hallway unable to see anything.

The office worker cautiously makes his way to the elevator and pushes the button for the elevator door button. The elevator button remains dark as the office worker pushes the button frantically again. Seeing no results, the office worker hurriedly makes his way to the staircase.
The office worker pauses at the staircase door intently listening for any sound of footsteps. Not hearing anything, the office worker carefully opens the door and closes the door shut behind him. Taking one step at a time, the office worker descends the flights of stairs heading for the lobby. However, a loud clunk can suddenly be heard in the stairway as slow deliberate footsteps can be heard descending from the stairs above him. Filled with fear, the office worker darts onto the third floor and wait for the footsteps fade away. Holding his breath, the office worker waits as the footsteps pause just by the 3rd-floor stairway door, before continuing downward.
The office worker lets out a sigh of relief as intently listens for any sound signaling the murderer’s return. After some time, the office worker slowly pries the door open to listen for any sounds coming from the staircase. Unable to hear anything, the office worker warily enters the stairwell once more.
However, before the office worker had even taken more than two steps, the hair on the back of his neck stands on edge. The office worker hastily turns around to see a tall hooded figure in a trench coat on the stair landing above him. The office worker fearfully clutches his leather bag to his chest and takes a step back. “I didn’t see anything! I promise I won’t say a single word! Please, I just want to go home!” The officer worker hoarsely shrieked.
The tall hooded figure in a single blink of an eye is suddenly standing directly in before the office worker. Before the office worker can react, the tall hooded figure leans in for a close whisper, “That won’t be necessary.”

The office worker’s eyes widen with terror, but with casual ease, the tall hooded figure shoves the office worker backward. In slow motion, the office worker tumbles down several flights of stairs as a loud snap is heard. Left in a strange awkward position, the office worker’s body comes to a halt at the bottom of the stairs. And with that, the tall hooded figure disappears without a trace left behind of his existence.
The next day the office worker’s body would be found and be labeled a tragic accident. The police concluded that the tired office worker had slipped in the dark and fallen to his tragic death. There was nothing to take note of except that Mr. Lǐ, the accountant was missing from his desk. But that wasn’t a strange event given that Mr. Lǐ had tenured his resignation several weeks ago and yesterday had been his last day of work.
