Jace's POV

The night was silent, the soft rustling sound resonated through the room as wind rushed past the barrier, enacted through visible azure runes in the arched window.

Scrunched up in one corner of the room, lied Jace, shifting his position on the hard stone floor.

The cold wind passed through Jace's tattered leather armour, causing him to shiver.

It's cold.

Just like the day you left me.

Corners of his brown eyes watered up as his heart started beating faster. Soft sobbing filled up the silent night as the rush of tears effortlessly cascaded it's way through his eyes.

And now, I've lost our daughter too.

I just want to lay down, and fade away in this corner. It's cold outside. It's too cold.

On your last night, when you couldn't sleep in my arms, I remember what you told me.

The night has never felt so dark.

The soft moonlight was illuminating the chamber as the slow serpents of tears, slithered their way through his face. Laying on cold stone floor, as the moonlight reflected through the pearls of tears collected on the smooth obsidian floor, his body started shaking.

It's dark.

My body feels cold.

Soft sobs diminished, turning in silent cries of agony, as Jace took his hands over his shoulders, trying to control his shivering.

It's too cold.

I promised you that I would protect our little girl.

And I broke it.

I couldn't save her.

I lost her.

I lost everthing.

I lost my reasoning and jumped on the suicidal charge, killing everything in my way, just to receive the embrace of death in the end.

I wanted to end this life.

I know what you're thinking of me now.

I know that I am a coward.

A coward who lost everything he loved.

His shivers stopped, as his scrunched body loosened. His slow sobs stopped as he gritted his teeth and rubbed his eyes. Pushing the hard floor, he sat and leaned against the wall.

Then, I met someone.

Jace's sight followed a small kitten, laying lifelessly on his cushion, as the hazy moonlight washed over his black fur. The only thing indicating he was alive, was his small chest, slowly moving up and down, resonating with his soft huffs.

A lost soul, from a place without any magic or monsters, dropped inside a dungeon.

What did he think when he first faced a monster? Did the thought of having a peaceful end, not crossed his mind?

Separated from his family, his home, what was the thing that still kept him going in this hopeless place?

Was a will to escape, this strong?

With the curiosity of a child, he so much reminds me of our daughter.

She too, wanted to see this world, know what secrets the magic held, awaken her own affinity, join the magic academy, never being bound to one place, soar high among the horizons. She had so many dreams.

But she didn't know how cruel this world could be. And neither does he.

Jace's eyes shifted as he looked up the endless darkness shrouding the high ceiling, the part which moonlight declined to illuminate.

Doesn't matter if he was a human, there is no way humans would let an untamed monster live among them.

Freedom is the only thing, that does not belong to monsters. Where every monster would either need to submit to humanity or be killed while seeking the freedom, his attitude is too naive.

The moment someone realized that a rare species with perfect potential has appeared, he would be hunted endlessly in attempts of taming or destroying him, before finally being sold off to a noble or Imperial family, to be kept as a work of art or a blessing from the Gods.

His trusting attitude towards humans would only lead him to his demise.

I might finally have a reason to not throw the fight.

Because you never loved a coward.

He saved my life.

Jace turned his gaze towards Alec. His brown eyes gleamed with a newfound purpose.

"And now, I wouldn't let any bastard lay their hands on him."

***

Jace groaned as he opened his eyes, bright sunrays pierced through his eyes, he quickly closed them, before slowly opening them again.

The sky was blue without the faintest hint of clouds. The warm morning breeze whistled as it went past the arched window.

Did I... fall asleep?

This was when Jace heard a muffled voice.

His quickly shifted his gaze and scrutinized the chamber. In the corners, towards the door, up the ceiling, there was no one else.

As he heard the same voice again, his eyes shifted towards a sleeping kitten in sunlight.

Is he awake?

The slow mumbles were coming from Alec.

"Hey! Are you awake?" Jace asked.

There was no response.

Jace quickly moved towards the window, near Alec, as he heard the voice again.

".. Ehehehehe..."

"Is he... laughing?"

".. Ehehehehehe... And then..."

"Sleep talking?"

".... Ehehehehe... I will slowly pour concentrated hydrochloric acid in your giant centipede ass... blue boy... try not to moan too hard... Ehehehehe... "

"What the actual fuck?"
