《Mystic Ink》Some times life is unpredictable.

Cass’s breaths were shallow, and she had to force herself to breathe deeply and calmly. But that was often more than she could manage, because Hall had returned today and she had not finished the stack of books he had left her. She was terrified, but Maurice had met with her a couple more times and been kind enough to share some things to reduce pain and anxiety.
According to Maurice, the more tense you were, the more pain would hurt. Coming off the street, Cass had never been relaxed in her life, but she had to try. But she could not overcome her fear before the guards took her back to the room and she saw Hall.
“Ah, Cass.” Hall smiled, and Cass trembled. “How have you been?”
Such an innocuous question, but the casual welcome made her more worried. “I am sorry my lord Hall, I was unable to finish the books you gave me.” Cass bowed her head, trying to hide her tears.
“How unfortunate,” Hall did not seem disappointed at all, but rather his smile had widened. “What did you think of the material?”
“I-it was fascinating, Lord Hall.” Cass was not lying, but the fact he had not brought up her punishment had scarred her even more. Anxiety over the unknown was worse than knowing what he would do… “But I had some questions…”
“Oh?”
Cass bit her lip, and then forged ahead, she really was curious and she was already going to be punished, so it wasn’t like it could be too much worse. “I read about Glyphs of Linking, where a glyph would be placed on the throat of one person and on the ear of another, allowing them talk over distances.”
“Ah, not a very useful glyph really. It requires a mage to charge both parties, and the charge drains rapidly compared to enhancement glyphs, and your question?”

“Given that I have an Absorption Glyph, could I pass mana through the link to charge other glyphs? Perhaps even a glyph could be applied to a bird to let me see through their eyes…”
Hall was surprised by her question, “You did not finish the books you say, but I have to admit I am impressed by your thinking. Thinking above and beyond to see what is possible, that is the essence of a mage.”
Hall looked at her for a moment, then nodded. “Unfortunately, mana can not be transfered with a Glyph of Linking. I understand why you would think it to be possible, but the mana is absorbed by the first glyph instead of being transfered. Further, Linking eyes is not possible, glyphs are typically applied in tattoos, and knowing that you can ‘see’ the issue.”
“I understand, thank you lord.” Cass said, she was somewhat surprised that he had answered the questions, but if nothing else she had gained that information. Now she knew she would be tortured.
“Oh, you are welcome.” Hall said cheerfully, “It is pleasent to have a student capable of thinking creatively, you would be amazed how many noble children fail at that… I think that deserves a reward.”
Cass was stunned, “A… reward?”
Hall reached his hand out and Cass flinched, but he merely patted her on the head.
“Your reward today will be to avoid punishment,” Hall said as she looked up at him, utterly stunned. “Haha, no need to look at me like that. I will always punish failure, and reward success, if you had not already earned a punishment I would have given you something nice.”
Was this really Hall? Cass thought he hated her, but the more she had applied herself to her studies the more kindness he had shown her. Sometimes, Cass had a strange thought that Hall actually liked her, but she could not believe it.
“Which books did you complete?” Hall asked, changing the subject.
Cass told him, and Hall seemed to think for a bit, then nodded.
“I think it is time for you to begin learning to use magic.”

Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
