《Set in Stone》Prologue

England, two years ago...
Every year on the first Monday in June, the supernatural world comes together to honour the Moon Goddess. From every corner in the United Kingdom and beyond, vampires, witches, and shapeshifters join the festivities to celebrate the powers gifted to them. Some even travel for hundreds of kilometres to connect with the supernatural world in England. It is the only day the different species are fully at peace with each other; no one is allowed to shift, do magic or even show their teeth. One incident can easily lead to a massacre with all the species so close together in a small area. The tension is high, but their dedication to the Goddess of the Moon - who created them, gave them power and a soulmate - is higher.
There isn't a single human in sight; if they were, they would never leave the ground alive. The human world is strictly separated from the supernatural world, as it has been for thousands of years to ensure the survival of everyone on earth.
In that crowd of thousands of supernatural creatures, where vampires are standing close to werewolves and witches are chatting with other shapeshifters, people would expect that nothing is too crazy for this world. They would think everyone would fit in, no matter who or what species you are, but that isn't the case. There have been whispers around the crowd about wild werewolves, abominable shapeshifters, and the worst of the worst, hybrids. Born out of two different full-blood beings, but not fully committed to either of them.
Supernatural creatures are not supposed to mate with each other. That is the law. The Goddess matches werewolves with werewolves and vampires with vampires for a reason. Only witches are allowed to produce children with humans, for the sake of their survival. But a witch with a werewolf? Or a vampire with a warlock? Unthinkable. What would they do if they ever saw the product of something like that? Imprison it? Kill it? Burn it? Nonetheless, those cursed creatures would never be welcome in their world.
The werecat in the crowd is anxious; she is an abomination. Her father was a werewolf, why couldn't she be one? If anyone here finds out, she will be thrown out of the pack, or worse...
The huntress has everything under control; she knows how to keep her heartbeat under control and she knows how to cover her scent. If they find out she's human, they will kill her...

The werewolf is nervous... there is something wrong with his wolf; whenever he's stressed, he's not able to control himself; yesterday, he almost attacked someone... if anyone finds out, he's a dead man.
The former Alpha knows he shouldn't have come here, but after years of wandering around, he wants to feel connected again and show his gratefulness to be alive to the Moon Goddess... but he needs to be careful, if they find out he's here, he will not make it out here alive...
The vampire is out for blood. Not from humans, but from the werewolves that destroyed his life. For him, this day is not a celebration, it's an opportunity to locate his next targets. Hopefully, he kills them before they kill him...
The hybrid wishes she was safe and sound in her home, far away from the crowd here in the forest. She didn't want to reveal herself to her friends, so she had to come to the celebration. Someone like her is not supposed to exist, she's unnatural. If anyone ever found out, she would never see the light of day again.
The Beta will follow his friend everywhere, but for the first time, he doubts the decision of the Alpha. They're vulnerable without a pack, why would they come to a place where almost everyone is stronger than they are. If they piss off the wrong person, they're dead...
All of them are almost invisible in that enormous crowd, only one pair of intrigued eyes catches the seven individuals. Those eyes belong to an unexpected and uninvited guest: a human. How did she find this place, hidden in the forest? She almost couldn't remember. She loves the adventure, going into the woods without knowing the exact path, but did she go in too deep? The people around her are watching her every move. What's going on, why do they look like they are going to kill her...?
Suddenly, a wave of bewilderment echoes through the crowd when an unknown Alpha and Beta become the centre of everyone's attention. The Alpha, a she-wolf walks with strong, confident steps through the audience. Her stomach is a bit swollen, indicating a pregnancy; her waist is covered by a hand that belongs to the person closest to her. Every member in the crowd can see the marks on their necks, but when usually, a sight like that triggers happiness, it now produces a wave of shock. A vampire; her mate is a vampire. And that's not all there is; behind them, more supernatural creatures appear. A warlock, another vampire; a couple of werewolves; walking together like they are friends. A family. A Pack.

Everyone stays quiet, simply eying at the group of diverse creatures. Some are watching them in horror; some seem intrigued, others look furious and disgusted. Questions about their identities and their intentions are thrown into the crowd until the Alpha herself raises her voice to address the curious audience: "We are a pack from the North, we have travelled here to celebrate and honour the Moon Goddess. We are shapeshifters, vampires, and witches."
"How is it possible?", "Lies!", "Preposterous," people mutter softly, too offended to neglect it, but too frightened of the charismatic Alpha to speak loud enough for everyone to hear. One brave, but traditional soul dares to ask: "What are you doing with the vampire, Alpha? He can't be your mate."
The alpha simply smiles brightly, "Oh, but he is," she says looking at her man lovingly." The Moon Goddess chose this vampire to be my soulmate. He is the love of my life and the father of my child." Another wave of words, showing the disapproval circles back and forth from the audience to the Pack from the North. The alpha is pregnant with a hybrid? An unnatural offspring?
The hybrid is astonished by the words of the she-wolf. She's carrying another hybrid, someone who's like her. The news affects her more than she is able to show. Is it hope she feels? The hope of not being alone anymore in the future? She has trouble believing in the fact that one day, hybrids will be accepted as part of the supernatural world. Not while everyone around her is shouting the most vulgar things to the Alpha of the North. What was she thinking? Why would she show up in a place she knows she will not be welcomed? The hybrid doesn't know whether the Alpha is courageous or foolish. The waves of shock the pack has provoked are becoming bigger; the crowd becomes louder and wilder. She has to get out of her. A sudden push she receives in her back makes her lose control of the vampire side of her; when she's pushed again against a group of werewolves, her fangs and glowing eyes are revealed. She knows immediately it's over; her secret is out. "A hybrid, she's the hybrid." The werewolves just stare at her, unable to move because of the bizarre monster in front of them. There's one werewolf who doesn't seem afraid; he's only stunned by the beautiful creature with too much fear in her eyes. His mate.
At the same time, only a few hundred meters away from the hybrid, the werecat is also facing difficulties. Not used to those crowded places, she flinches every time someone accidentally touches her. It's not the touch that bothers her, but the pain that follows after. It is making her nervous and hard for her to focus. She's not allowed to shift; it will ruin everything. But it's too long since she was able to; which makes it harder to control. After another bump, this time against her painful hip, she shifts, for the second time in her life, showing the audience what she truly is. In the corner of her now catlike eyes, she sees the faces of disgust; she sees werewolves shifting and claws and fangs between other people's faces. She wants to close her eyes, but fear keeps them wide open.
Then a bright light disrupts the screams and the terror, blinding everyone on the colossal field. A silence follows after the light, not a single sound is heard for minutes, no footstep nor breathe, no bird nor insect. Everyone seems asleep when no eyes are closed. It wouldn't be until the next day, the first person who was present in the forest would wake up in their own home, realizing it's Tuesday and thinking back to the beautiful Monday they celebrated together.
Not recalling the true thing that happened that day.
Not remembering the massacre the Goddess of the moon prevented by wiping everyone's memory.
Not knowing a certain hybrid, werecat, and an entire pack in the North.
