《Extinction》The Digg

The police had visited the digg site in Alberta. Dr. Fiona Hall hadn’t been seen since yesterday. Dr. Hall’s trailer was searched, and the body of a giant robot was discovered inside of it.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police were called, and they came to the digg site. The Mounties interviewed the digg team members. The digg team told the Mounties that the last time they had seen Dr. Hall she was with David Sterling - the famous David Sterling.

David Sterling was a wanted man. He was wanted for a string of murders in New York - including the killing of several policemen.

The Mounties contacted the FBI, who visited the digg site. The giant robot was photographed. The photographs made it to the Pentagon, and were recognised by Generals as Dr. Edwin Zoft’s robot.

News reporters covered the story of the missing Dr. Hall. The news reporters said that the police were concerned for Dr. Hall's safety, as she was believed to have been abducted by the famous inventor and suspected murderer David Sterling.

A manhunt was underway. Police searched everywhere for Dr. Hall and David Sterling.

The generals at the Pentagon tried to work out why Zoft’s robot was at a dinosaur dig site in Alberta, Canada. The generals continued looking for Zoft, and now started looking for David Sterling as well.

Work at the dig site in Alberta was paused. The team were in shock about the news that Dr. Hall was missing, and was most likely abducted by David Sterling.

‘We had dinner with him, at the camp’ - said one of the dig team to the media

‘He was totally normal - he didn’t seem crazy!’ - said another one

There was an international manhunt for David Sterling. An interpol red notice was put out. David Sterling was a wanted man.

The dig manager - Brandon - gave the team a week off, and arranged for counseling for any that needed it.

‘Whatever is going on with Fiona’ - Brandon said - ‘I know that she would want us to keep digging’

So dig they did.

Work continued at the site. And then the shout went up - ‘I got bones!’

Brandon came to look. They were bones - dinosaur bones.

‘That is amazing work Heather’ - said Brandon

Heather had found an outcrop of bones. They looked like rib bones. Heather was an undergrad from the University of Alberta in the paleontology program. Dr. Fiona Hall was Heather’s hero. Heather loved working on the dig site, and loved working on a dig that was being directed by Fiona Hall - the Tyrannosaurs Regina. Heather would sit at the camp fire in the evenings, and watch Fiona Hall. Heather would dream of being just like Fiona Hall.

And now Heather had found her first dinosaur skeleton.

‘Well Heather, that is your thesis, masters, and Phd taken care of’ - joked one of the other dig team.

Heather blushed.

The area where Heather had located the rib bones was further excavated. Imaging equipment was placed over the fossils, and the size of the bed was measured. The size of the dinosaur was estimated to be about 2 meters long.

‘Probably not a T-rex’ - said someone from the museum

Heather did not mind. She was just excited and proud to have found a skeleton on a Fiona Hall dig.

The bone bed was cut out of the rocks, and placed on a flatbed for transfer back to the museum where it would be properly extracted.

Weeks and months passed.

There had been no news of Dr. Fiona Hall, or the wanted David Sterling. The US government continued their secret search for the dead Dr. Edwin Zoft.

Heather had been invited to the museum. The bones she had found had been exposed.

In the workshop at the museum the exposed partial skeleton of a saurornitholestes lay.

It was beautiful.

‘It is about 75 to 80% complete Heather’ - said Dr. Warren Mole from the paleontology department - ‘and a great specimen’

‘But this is the really crazy thing, Heather’ - said Dr. Samantha Lagarre, also from the paleontology department.

Dr. Legarre led Heather over to a computer terminal.

‘So we had the bones x-rayed, as we always do’ - said Dr. Legarre - ‘And we found this’

Heather looked at the computer screen.

Inside of the saurornitholestes skeleton was a perfectly shaped cube.

‘What is that?’ - said Heather

‘We don’t know’ - said Dr. Mole

‘It looks like the saurornitholestes ate it, and it has been in there for about 67 million years’ - said Dr. Legarre.

Heather leaned into the screen and looked closer.

‘We don’t know what it is Heather’ - said Dr. Legarre - ‘But we will be extracting it next week and then studying it’

‘Maybe we can open it up, and see what is inside it’ - said Dr. Mole

‘It might be alien!’ - laughed Dr. Legarre
