《Extinction》The Storage Facility
Advertisement
The bin in the giant storage facility was emptied. There was only one cube in it. The bin was emptied by a skinny green alien, wearing a white smock.
The skinny alien visited every bin marked “FOR STORAGE” in the hanger. There was only one cube - the cube containing Arnie.
The cube containing Arnie was placed in a new bin that was on a trolley. The skinny alien wheeled the trolley through the hanger. Red box scouting crafts were landing and taking off continuously all around him. The tall scout aliens were climbing in crafts or climbing out of them. The skinny alien paid no attention.
The skinny alien wheeled the trolley to the rear of the hanger, and then walked down a long corridor. Hundreds of aliens were coming and going along the corridor, coming back from a scouting mission or heading out on one.
The skinny alien walked along the corridor slowly. The skinny alien stopped outside of a room. The sign outside it said “STORAGE”.
The skinny alien opened the door, and pushed the trolley with the bin into the room.
The room was a vast space. By the door was a desk, and a fat alien was asleep behind it.
‘I got a box’ - said the skinny alien
The fat alien continued to sleep.
The skinny alien banged their fist on the desk.
‘What’s happening…?’ - said the fat alien, waking up
‘I want your job Graanzo’ - said the skinny alien - ‘All you do is sleep’
Graanzo rubbed his eyes.
‘Oh, hello Miikzo’ - said Graanzo
‘So, what’s new Graanzo? - said Miikzo
‘Not much, just watching the boxes’ - said Graanzo
‘You mean, dreaming about watching the boxes’ - said Miikzo
‘You have no idea, Miikzo. Nothing ever happens here’ - said Graanzo - ‘The supervisor is always moaning at me, but I have to sit in this room all day watching those boxes, and nothing ever happens’

‘Oh that sound terrible, Graanzo’ - said Miikzo
‘This job has me completely out of whack Miikzo. I come here and sleep all day, and then when my shift finishes I am awake all night’ - said Graanzo
The skinny alien took the cube containing Arnie out of the bin and walked past the desk. Beyond the desk was a huge pile of white cubes that extended as far as the eye could see. Hundreds-of-thousands of white cubes.
The skinny alien pulled its arm back, and threw the white cube containing Arnie into the pile of other white cubes.
The skinny alien walked back to the desk.
‘Well, back to sleep’ - said Miikzo
‘Looks that way’ - said Graanzo
The skinny alien left the storage room, and wheeled the trolley back along the corridor towards the hangar.
The fat alien behind the desk fell back to sleep.
