‘Yes, well thank you very much’ - said Mrs. Sterling
Mrs. Sterling was on the phone with the headteacher.
‘A late bloomer, just like his father’ - said Mrs. Sterling
The headteacher had phoned to apologize. David would not be suspended. The headteacher was sorry about the mix-up and the accusations of cheating.
‘That was the headteacher on the phone’ - said Mrs. Sterling to David
‘Is everything sorted out now?’ - said David, who was on the computer.
‘Yes, they are not going to suspend you’ - said Mrs. Sterling
‘That is a relief’ - said David
Mrs. Sterling walked over to where David was sitting.
‘What are you doing?’ - said Mrs. Sterling
‘Solving a puzzle’ - said David
David was staring at the screen. It was a series of thousands of zeros and ones.
‘What kind of puzzle is that?’ - said Mrs. Sterling
‘It is supposed to be an impossible puzzle’ - said David
Mrs. Sterling smiled.
‘Your father told me he completed a puzzle when he was young, and he won a prize. When he called the number to claim the prize he spoke to someone from the government, and they arranged a meeting with him and gave him a test and then they gave him a scholarship to university. The puzzle was run by some spy agency to find people who were very good at puzzles, and if they could solve the puzzle then the government paid for them to go to university and then work for the government solving puzzles’ - said Mrs. Sterling.
‘Yes, I read that in a biography about father’ - said David
David was entering his details on a form, and hit enter.
David sat with his mother whilst she knitted and watched TV. David was reading a book he had found in the barn about quantum string theory.

Two days later David was eating breakfast in the kitchen. He heard the postman, and walked to the front door and picked up a letter. It was addressed to him.
David took the letter back to the kitchen and opened and read it.

David walked to the wall where the telephone was hanging and dialed the number at the top of the letter.
‘Hello?’ - said a woman
‘Hello’ - said David
‘Is this David Sterling?’ - said the woman
‘Yes, it is’ - said David
‘Are you, by any chance, related to Dr. Roger Sterling?’ - said the woman
‘Yes’ - said David
‘What is your relationship to Dr. Sterling?’ - said the woman
‘He was my father’ - said David
‘We would like you to come to Cambridgeshire, to collect your prize’ - said the woman
‘When?’ - said David
‘When can you come?’ - said the woman
‘Saturday’ - said David
‘Do you have a pen and paper?’ - said the woman
‘I don’t need a pen or paper’ - said David
‘Do you know the Barclay Laboratory?’ - said the woman
‘My father taught there’ - said David
‘Come to the Barclay Laboratory on Saturday at 10AM’ - said the woman
‘Okay’ - said David, and he hung up the phone
David walked to the lounge where his mother was drinking tea and watching the morning news.
‘We have to go to Cambridge on Saturday’ - said David

‘What are you talking about?’ - said Mrs. Sterling
‘I solved a puzzle and won a prize. When I called the number to claim the prize I spoke to someone from the government. They want me to go to Cambridge on Saturday and they will ask me to take to a test, and then they will offer me a scholarship to go to university’ - said David
Mrs. Sterling stared at David.
‘I am not going to go to school today’ - said David - ‘If you can call them and let them know please’
‘Okay’ - said Mrs. Sterling
David went back to the kitchen and finished his breakfast. He then sat and read books all day whilst his mother knitted and watched television.

Until You Do It Right
The world ended on December thirty-first of the year two thousand and twenty, precisely at the stroke of midnight. The human race began to be systematically exterminated by the spawn of the System. We were given a chance to defeat them, to take back our place at the top of the food chain. We failed. The first to perish were those who bravely rebelled. The soldiers. The defenders. One by one, they fell. In their final moments, they begged for aid. Nobody replied. The next to succumb were those who feebly cowered. The deniers. The leeches. Together, they fell. In their final moments, they cried out into the darkness. Countless voices replied in kind. The last to decline were those who shamelessly ran. The deserters. The cowardly. Alone, they fell. In their final moments, they whimpered quietly. There was nobody left to answer. The final human to die was a survivor. A runner. As he died, he begged for salvation. His prayers were answered. He was offered a chance to save himself, along with all of humanity, and he took it. This is his story. “I sat in the dark and thought: There’s no big apocalypse. Just an endless procession of little ones.”― Neil Gaiman, Signal to Noise. I am absolutely new to writing and will take any and all constructive criticism. Please give feedback, it is greatly appreciated. I will update the tags as they change, and I hope that you enjoy this little story I'm writing! Quick warning: Seamus is intentionally a flawed character, and this story is going to explore those flaws and perhaps even change a few of them. I do not agree with all of his actions, but it is what it is.

The Villain's Double Life
“The Villain’s Double Life as the Hero’s Mentor," “Demon Nobles Want to Live Too: A Hero-Raising Simulator for the Transmigrated Villain," “Just Because I’m a Villain Doesn’t Mean I Want the World to End!” Cyrus Calvide was the second son of an aristocratic lord; haughty, vain and power-hungry. One day, when his ancestral inheritance manifested, he discovered he was able to steal other’s powers and abilities using demonic magic. Taking this as a sign that he was destined to rule over others and become the new king of this land, he poisoned his father, killed his elder brother, and embarked on the path to greatness, taking advantage of a demonic invasion to consolidate power and harvest the abilities of others in a cruel and bloody fashion. Until he was summarily defeated by the Hero as a mid-game boss battle and executed for his crimes, of course. When a dedicated fan of the RPG “Next to Eden” awakened in the body of the cruelest future Count, four years before the beginning of the game, he pledged to live humbly. He would let his brother lead and support the Hero from the shadows to ensure the demon invasion would be defeated and he could enjoy life in peace. Rather, he would have, if he hadn’t gotten the Hero’s mentor killed in a freak monster attack before the Hero’s training could even begin. How was he supposed to live a life of peace and luxury if the Hero couldn’t stop the end of the world!? Donning a mask, Cyrus took up mentoring the Hero himself; how hard could it possibly be? . . . Four years later, the kind jack-of-all-trades hero Leon had become a twisted powerhouse: alienating his party members, clearing enemy encounters in a single magical blast, and coldly ignoring the affections of the girl whose love would have allowed him to clear the final boss. He seemed to have plastered himself to his Master’s side, instead. Cyrus bit back his despair while the hero reached out to grasp his hand. “Please stop ignoring the saint, Leon; you can't beat the Demon King by grinding stats! You need the power of love, remember?” “Don’t worry, Master,” Leon smiled as he traced the lines of Cyrus’s palm gently, almost reverently. “I have all the love I need.” VDL is two parts plot and worldbuilding, one part slow-build gay romance, starring a man far too proud to admit he's in over his head and the hero who loves him. Should be updating weekly.
