《The Nebula》Chapter 32: Flight Training

Author Corner: Hi guys, nothing new to say this time, simply no procrastinating, also the story will start moving rapidly soon. (hint end of arc arriving soon)

Enjoy!!

Above the large ring of asteroids was the newly acquired outpost base the station was able to claim after the bandit raid.

Slowly approaching it was a black and white shuttle coming from the planet side.

"Crew Star Comet requesting landing permission?" A feminine voice called over the communicator towards the base.

This was Alex who was at the helm of the shuttle.

"Permission granted. We have opened all the escape rounds as landing ports and numbered each. Report to port 2." The man replying said. At the same time the coordinates for the Port in question was transmitted and was marked as a waypoint by Alex's AI Xeno.

The two guided the ship towards the port and as they saw the target port, he began to slow the shuttle down and turn it to face the port before slowly approaching it. The escape routes all each had a size that could fit the largest shuttle which at the time had exactly that in all locations. Now with an installed energy shield to contain the air inside, the escape routes had all been equipped as hangar ports.

Alex releases the landing gears below the ship as the shuttle starts to pass through the energy field.

On a catwalk at the back was a man with two glow red lams waving them back and forth. This was to guide the ship.

After the ship reached the center he lifted them and Alex stopped the ship and carefully lowered the ship until they touched the ground and turned off the engines.

"Guys,we landed!" Alex announced to the crew.

At that time he took off his seat belt and vaulted off the seat and ran off.

"A bit more Lass!" The dwarf was shouting as me and him lift the second back wing and hold it behind Noah's robot.

This is by far the heaviest object i have ever carried.

Noah was working quickly to attach all the cables and connections between the robot and the wing.

"Alright! It's done! Move it closer!" Noah shouted.

I just held the wing while the dwarf pulled it.

*Thump! Cacha!*

The wing slowly moves closer while Noah was properly pushing the wires under the makes contact with the port on the back the two had made and after making sure nothing was out of place he closed the locks around the base of the wings finally sealing them on.

"Done!" He shouted and i finally relaxed. With me releasing my Psi the wing that was straight out parallel with the ground lowered until it was parallel with the walls.

You have gained a level in External Psi Manipulation.

"Good job lass! We really couldn't do this without you!" The dwarf said.

I was breathing ragged as he complimented me.

He had asked me to help while in space but since we would be docking and the base had a Gravity generator the Wings would instantly crash onto the ground as soon as we entered. Each wing is about 300 kilos each so it goes without saying that the fall would have destroyed them. That said, the dwarf says these wings are very lightweight but obviously as they were a more advanced model of basic Dwarf fighter wings they still used a number of heavy parts. The advanced models will only have one or two metal sections making the wing on its back. After activating them it would make solid psi wings coming from those matching wings. Some even used drones as part of the wing as well as weapons.

"Let me rest." I said and sat down.

"Hahaha that's good Lisa, we really wouldn't know what to do without you here." Roktar said as he watched us.

I blushed a bit as i took a cup of water from Jessica who brought one for me.

"Are the other two as heavy?" I asked.

"Yes but these you only need to lift off the ground only 20 cm for them to reach the target location." The dwarf said. Looking at the wings leaning on the wall i felt relief. Hang downward so the weight will be at one point and not stretched out.

After a bit Alex appeared and i rested enough so i got up and only grabbed the top and a part about a fourth of the way down and lifted the right wing and moved it slowly and lifted it higher.

Sweat started to form as i held it in place but much less than before. The two worked quickly and connect everything and pushed in lace while keeping any wires from being loose.

Then the last wing was placed in the same manner finally completing the robot.

The wings had a rather interesting effect.

"Thanks a lot for the help Lisa." Noah says and i nod.

He opens the chest and sits inside starting it up.

"Wings located, installation program active." Lia's voice called out.

Noah walks to the middle of the room. The wings on the sides move behind his back then to the side of his legs. When its on the side it spreads to a 25 degree angle and the wings open then close. The one on his back lift upwards before opening and spread to the sides then close again slowly.

They keep doing that slowly getting faster until it started to get faster and seems more natural.

"Wow, wings are hard to control." Noah said.

"Control of the part is the first step to using it. The more you use it the better the program gets when testing it." The dwarf said.

The program gets better thanks to the AI who is analyzing the data and improve.

Suddenly one of the wings stops and twitches when opening. The others stopped as it did and it closed.

"Sorry, bad code there... hehe." Lia's voice called.

After a moment the wing opened and the rest fell in sync.

After half an hour they were moving naturally as the arms and legs. Noah said he gained four levels in his robot piloting skill by getting used to this as well as one level on Inner Psi Manipulation.

"Don't get cocky kid, piloting only means moving around. Flying has its own skill." The dwarf said dunking a bucket of cold water.

Another ten minutes everything was done.

"This is as best i can do. It will move as naturally as your arms and legs. Now you just need to train." Lia said.

"Great..." Noah said.

"Let's take a few steps back and make sure Noah is outside before we try. His driving skills have much to be desired." Roktar said.

"Shut it old man!" He replied making me giggle.

"Does he drive badly?" I asked.

"NO!" Noah shouted.

"He doesn't have a driver's license at the age of 20. That should be an indication." Roktar said.

Noah was frowning but just closed the chest lid sealing himself inside. All the wings close and he looks towards the door out.

"Open the door so i can get out! He said.

We nod and i move over and open the bulkhead door which opened up to the hangar we were inside.

I felt a bit playful so i jumped out and floated around.

"Come on Noah, it's not to hard." I said making Roktar laugh. It made me blush a bit.

Noah walked out and jumped down landing with a loud thump almost a crash.

The others make their way up to the airlock that was linked to a catwalk that would lead directly to the door which was at the ground floor.

"Kid, flying is external psi manipulation. Don't get cocky, start slow. We are at the base and there are several dwarf fighters here to recharge you." The dwarf said.

When i looked around i did notice a group of dwarf and elves at the edge of the hangar.

They walked over and greeted the dwarf before looking down.

"Boris you made a four wing basic model for the kid?" One f the other dwarves asked the one that was with us.

"Much more efficient, i made sure to rewire the bot so psi cost is the same as if he had two but the legs give him more stability." He replied.

"Wait the side wings aren't needed?" Roktar asked.

Boris thought a moment.

"Think of them as training wheels. Basic model wings don't have good rotation or stopping power. It also helps him turn he just needs to get used to the four wings." Boris replied.

I chuckled and looked at Noah who had spread all the wings.

A light glow came from the bottom side of all the metal wing.

Slowly growing stronger until the heavy robot finally took off slowly.

As it rises it stopped at one meter where it hovered.

"Sir Noah is putting a lot of pressure on the wings and overexpending Psi, he has a long way to go." My AI Tris said. The elven maid AI appeared and evaluated the floating robot.

At this moment we saw Havic do something that spread two large bat wings on her lower back. I felt psi cover her wings as she began to fly and move towards Noah.

She knocked on the head.

"Noah, you're focusing your psi incorrectly. You are using it on the lower side and trying to push but that is wrong. Cover the entire wing within inner psi then push outwards." She said and focused enough Psi into her wings so it had a visible glow. The glow showed how to do it.

The glow spread from the base to the tip the spread behind and above forming two balls of psi that acted as a cushion. I did something similar but covered my body in psi.

A moment of silence followed before a dull but visible wave of psi appeared on wings before from the four wings it formed four small balls.

The consumption drastically dropped and he began to rise.

"Thank you Havic." Noah said.

At this moment the right leg wing aimed forward and the left turned back and his body began spinning then he reversed and stopped.

He pushed both forward making his legs rise before the wings on his back pushed off moving forward slowly.

The leg wings which were facing the floor turned on an angle slowly increasing his speed until it was almost parallel but as he reached the wall the pointed back and pushed his legs and made his body face up and avoid collisions.

"Kid has skill, got used to flying quickly under gravity." One of the elves said.

"Agreed, most are basic moves but he isn't bad." Another said.

"Surprisingly he hasn't crashes." Roktar said.

Me and Havic fly over and land on the catwalk.

“I didn’t know you had wings!” I said intrigued and saw as they pulled back and formed some cute bat wing tattoos.

“Zastro’s have a battle form which you should have seen. Males are those huge beast almost demon like people.” She explained.

I remembered that, they were extremely large muscular and i also remember Frethir’s arm expanding like that.

“With training we can control which parts of our body transforms so while in the ships the men are normally the police and remain within wings unless needed. Women normally don’t fight but we still train to protect ourselves and we do have a battle form which i would compare to those super sexy demon women from lots of porn site” “That's good thanks.” I said blushing and cutting her off.

The other women were also blushing but chose to hide it while Alex had hidden himself behind Roktar’s huge build.

Boris looks at this come and connects a chat line with noah.

“Hey kids, that's good for flight in an atmosphere, now out into space.” He says with a mischievous grin.

The other Dwarfs start to chuckle and i looked at the others for an answer but they just shrug.

“Can do!” Noah’s voice comes in and the robot stabilizes in the air before turning towards the opening and flying that way at about 50 kilometers per hours.

We watch as he passes and suddenly he rockets forward and upward nearly four times as fast.

All the dwarves start laughing and the elves smile and shake their head.

“Hey what the hell!” Noah’s voice called from the communicators.

“Learn to fly kid! Ahahah!” Boris shouted.

“Why did he suddenly accelerate?” Alex asked.

“In space there is no gravity, there is no air resistance, there is no force. That means that as long as you accelerate you will get faster and faster. Originally The Robot's were made to handle gravity of high gravity planets, even with their mass the reinforcement let them move around and smaller ones were better for high gravity planets. The big ones we see today are powerful planetside but their true purpose is for space use. Their size alters in nothing the speed or trajectory and can have any form because of the lack of air resistance.” An elf explained.

“The kids top speed planetside would be around 100 km/h but but in space he could easily pass six times that speed. Most ships function differently in and out of an atmosphere and their programmings automatically align to the environment so that when you exit the atmosphere you don’t suddenly rocket off like the kid did. He doesn’t have this and its a good training course for him to learn to control his speed in space as well as controlling his inertia.” Boris said.

“Fuck you all!” He shouted in rage.

“Get moving kid, you have today to learn to control your speed. You should get your Dwarf Robot Flying skill eventually after getting used to it. Use the asteroid field as an obstacle course, no questions asked now move it! If its not by me then Colonel will put you through an even harder training course in the middle of a monster infested area of the asteroid field!” Boris said and cut the connection.

“Now then, shall we get something to eat?” He asked without any shame.

“Sure thing, some fast food would do this old man some good.” Roktar said.

“I think just a salad would be alright for me.” I said.

The elves smile my way and we all moved on.

One of the female elves walked over and we started to talk. Sadly she noticed how my eyes looked in certain directions and wouldn’t stop teasing.

Noah PoV

“Fuck them all!” I curse those guys.

“Hahaha they really got you this time!” Lia said making a screen appear showing her rolling on her virtual floor.

“Shut up and build a random route for me. Straight crossing through the asteroid field!” I said annoyed.

“Yes yes hold on.” She said as she picked herself up in the image before making it vanish.

Then all the ‘extra’ screens disappeared leaving only the view the robot eye cameras were able to see.

Soon i spotted a line that went forward and weaved around before heading down into a breaching area with less asteroids.

“Follow the line, i will be using the scanners to identify a pathway that isn’t too difficult for starters. It will be mostly wide space with few obstacles but it still has some.” She said.

“Make this beginner difficulty, let's think of this as a video game.” I said.

“Got it, separating difficulty between Beginner, newbie, adapt, expert, Pro.” She said.

With that set a table with the five difficulties appeared and the Beginner was selected.

No doubt she instantly made a program for this since the guidelines didn’t exist before.

Following what Havic said may blast me to quickly but i guess this is to get used to flying so let’s do this.

I start following the what i did before and cover all the wings. Then i start moving but with the same little push i move too quickly and had to stop.

“This is hard!” I complained.

“Well its simply external psi manipulation. Havic said she makes small points under her wings which help her keep afloat. Why not make one or two escape points along the wings.” Lia suggested and showed a computerized diagram of the wing covered and a single or two openings in the bubbles of psi pushing forward.

I nod and try that. With the bubble made i make one opening on the top of both wings. Surprisingly it worked and i was able to achieve 50 km/h after a minute by then i stopped releasing psi and used the bottom wings i controlled my direction only using the wings to accelerate forward after my direction gets to off and i begin showing signs of spinning.

After a bit i move towards the pathway.

“Release two openings on the wings so that you can do this difficulty to get experience.” Lia said.

“Alright…” I said and open a second opening. At once my acceleration rate rose by double and before i reached the asteroid field i already reached 120 km/h.

I cut the flow and start controlling the bottom wings as i reach the asteroid field.

I kept following the light through the asteroid field turning and focusing on control keeping the speed low and properly following. I approach a large asteroid and push my legs forward and turn my body and accelerate making my body turn and move another direction before i spun and flew around the rock with my back facing it. Lia had me go close and avoid the jutting rocks. It was rather hard due to the tight spaces but i let myself slow down and get used to it before we continue.

Soon enough we appear on the top side again near the base and as i reach the end of the course that Lia played out i was surprised.

You have gained a new Class skillFighter Robot Flight PilotRarity3Level 1A skill unique only to pilots of a Fighter Robot. This skill represents the ability to fly both in space and planetside.

Improves Control when flying by 5%

Decreases Psi Consumption by 5%

“So we only need the beginner trial for this.” Lia said.

“Well beginner was already tough, i got a headache from controlling the wings since they aren’t a part of my body naturally.” I say.

“Would be good if you had Psi gates on your back and waist. Would save you the trouble.” Lia commented jokingly.

I just roll my eyes.

“Roll the program at beginner again and choose a different route.” I tell her and look at my Psi container.

With the upgrade recently i upgraded the three containers to 7,500 psi capacity giving 22,500 psi to use. One run used up 3,500 from the intensive movement which meant the wings had a heavy consumption which will require a lot of recharges. That said the work of moving a single asteroid and pushing it properly towards the planet will eat up even more. That said even finding a good one will take just as long so the time to consumption ratio will be a bit evened out.

“We will go until we can’t train more.” I said.

“Got it! So starting up beginner run again!” Lia said pumped and starts up the program.

20 hours later

Fighter Robot Flight PilotRarity3Level 9A skill unique only to pilots of a Fighter Robot. This skill represents the ability to fly both in space and planetside.

Improves Control when flying by 9%

Decreases Psi Consumption by 9%

“Not bad, with 5 recharges and being able to go up to adapt difficulty with only minor damages isn’t bad.” I said.

“Yeah minor damages but you still were going over 180 km/h to get those damages.” Lia said.

“Hey if i wasn’t cautious by reinforcing the robot i would have lost my fucking right arm by now.” I complained.

“And who made you reinforce? You would have lost the entire robot if you didn’t reinforce it!” Lia shouted back.

I look to the side avoiding her gaze.

*Thump*

I land at the open door to my workshop.

I fold my wings and enter before but the robot standing where it should and deactivate it finally and jump out and stretch.

I feel the pain of hunger and call the others and find they are in the tavern that was opened here enjoying a drink and food. The time was noon Galactic time and i have only been training the last 20 hours so i am starving. I run off to find this tavern and stuff my face after closing up the ship.
