《Double Trouble》12. Melody (Part 3)

The cabinet door soon opened as Jordan fell onto the ground. "So, do you think Stanley will get out ok?" Jordan asked, unaffected by the fall.

"Hey, how did you know the coast was clear?" Melody turned and questioned.

"I heard the door close," Jordan replied, picking himself back up.

"Oh. Well, Stanley has to, otherwise, Hilary..." Her voice faded, feeling like she could choke on her words, the more she spoke.

Jordan squinted his eyes at her. "You know, for someone that claims to hate Stanley, you seem..."

"It's not what it sounds like!" Melody shook her head, trying to deny such a possibility.

"But what can we do? It's not like we can go back in time to prevent that atrocity from—"

"Wait, say that again?"

"That again? Oh, you mean, 'It's not like we can go back in time to—'"

"Jordan, that's a brilliant idea! You're a genius!" Melody took out her phone.

"I am?" Jordan pointed at himself. "What did I—?"

"Look here; I got an idea." Melody accessed the Wish App. However, the screen froze. She furiously kept tapping on the screen, resetting the app, app store, and phone. When she finally got it to work, Melody showed it to Jordan.

"This is the Wish App. You can type in any wish you want, and it'll come true." She explained. "It's how I summoned you into existence."

Jordan nodded, acting like he paid attention to what she said. "So, how does it work?"

Melody tried to show him, but a pop-up showed up, telling her she already used up her wish privilege and that her account got banned. This scenario prompted her to flip out. "What the heck? Why is this acting up?"

"Maybe you didn't read the terms and rules?" Jordan guessed.

"What?" Melody asked, unsure if she quite understood him. She eyeballed the rules, and her eyes widened. "If you make a selfish wish, you get punished in some way." She read. "You won't know when and what will happen to you, however." Melody continued. "You can only make one wish per account, so choose wisely and wish for something selfless."

"That might explain it." Jordan crossed his arms and confirmed.

"But, my wish wasn't selfish at all; it was very selfless," Melody muttered.

"You think so, but the people behind this app might not agree with you." Jordan pointed out.

"As if anyone would not want to use a wish on themselves." Melody scoffed. "Talk about ridiculous. Why is this trash so popular? It'll probably lose its trend within a week or so or get shut down due to complaints." She waved it off.

"I'm not sure if..."

Melody's face beamed up. She looked over at Jordan. There might be a chance. "Hey, you can make a wish on the phone!" She suggested wildly.

"Me?" Jordan pointed at himself. "But I don't even know—"

"Don't tell me you don't know what to wish for." Melody interrupted. "I can just tell you what to put on there with your account." She whispered into his ear.

Jordan shook his head, uncertain about the idea. "Wait, are you sure this is a good idea?"

"Yeah, I'll take you with me, so you don't have to worry about being alone."

"Wait a—"

"Stop saying, wait!"

"But—"

"What now?"

"Doesn’t that technically qualify as selfish?" Jordan pointed out.

"Ha! Don't be ridiculous, what you'll be doing is for my sake, which is the opposite of selfishness. Wouldn't you agree, Jordan?"

Jordan looked back at the windows, watching Hilary walk out of the apartment. He glanced back at the phone and sighed. "Alright, if you say so." Jordan made an account himself and typed up the wish Melody ordered him to make and pressed send.

The two waited in silence. How long would it take for the request to go through, if at all? Moments went by, and nothing had happened. Minutes went by, but it felt like hours on short notice. Just when things became bleak, and they both lost all hope, a magic portal appeared in the center of the room, with lightning emerging from the sides of the entrance.

"What's going on here?" Jordan questioned.

"No way, finally, it worked!" Melody cheered and laughed. "Come on, let's go!" She grabbed his hand as they marched over toward the portal and walked through it.
