《Double Trouble》10. Hilary (Part 3)

Jordan made it to his room and couldn't help but find it odd. The door opened a crack, with the light turned off. He nuzzled the door open and walked into the black area.
"Hello?" A soft voice called out.
"W-Who's there?" Jordan questioned.
"Don't you recognize me? Then again, it has been a while since I've seen you, my dear."
Jordan took a while to let those words register in his mind. His face contorted to a total surprise upon realizing who was in front of him.
"Nana, is that you?" He asked, his breath caught in his throat.
"You are the real Stanley, right? Don't act like I don't notice the contact lens."
Contact lens? Is she talking about me? How...?
"Do you miss me?"
"Yes."
"Then step closer."
Hilary finally caught up with him and yelled out to snap him out of it. "Wait, stop! Don't—"
But 'Jordan' couldn't hear her. His mind had been blank, and his thoughts were absent as he stepped closer. Hilary rushed over to the door, but it closed on her before she could get close to it. Hilary clasped onto the knob and struggled to open it.
"Hello? Hello? Open up, please!" Hilary called out from the other side of the door.
"I knew I heard you from before; you're alive and well." 'Jordan' spoke up as he walked closer to the darkness. "So, I'm not crazy, am I?"
"I heard you've been having problems with something." The figure extended their arms toward Jordan. "I mean, why else would you keep ignoring my calls, Stanley?"
"Um, about that..."
"I want to help you feel better."
"You can, but how?"
"If you trust me, then close your eyes and take my hand."

'Stanley' extended his arm and reached for 'Nana,' when Hilary continued to pound on the door.
"Open up already! What's going on over there?" She yelled out.
The pounding had caused the closet door behind 'Nana' to open, and an unconscious body plopped out. He looked like 'Stanley,' but with paler skin, lifeless eyes, and foam poured out of his mouth as his body laid motionless.
'Stanley' snapped back to reality and noticed the closet filled with corpses as his eyes widened and took a step back in horror. His heart was beating fast, and his stomach lurched. "What's going on?"
"You weren't supposed to know about that,” ‘Nana’ brought up. “Oh well, it doesn't matter."
He turned to the figure, and upon further inspection, realized something. "You're not my real nana, are you?" He pointed at the one with piercing topaz eyes and a wicked smile. As the figure loomed over to grab him, 'Jordan' fell back and crawled over to the doorknob, trying to pry it open, but to no avail.
.-.-.-.
From the other side of the door, Hilary could hear screams of terror. She stepped back and placed her hands in her mouth, mist forming around her eyes.
"Landlord, somebody help!" She ran downstairs, screaming.
Hilary hurried to the main lobby to search for help. Her phone batteries had died, and she couldn't find a nearby operational phone to use. Hilary walked around the area and came to notice the walls covered in red liquid splatters; people laid on the ground, motionless.
She clutched her chest as her heart pounded, and as she tiptoed across the hallway, attempting not to touch any of the bodies. What happened down here while she was upstairs?
Hilary heard groaning from somewhere nearby. Somebody was still alive, and they were around here somewhere. She listened to the sounds and ran over to the office door and slammed it open. She looked down as the Landlord struggled to get up; he used the desk as a stepping stool.

"Are you alright?" Hilary bent down to help pick him up. The more she looked, it made her realize that the Landlord looked like Jordan, who also had an eerily resemblance to Stanley.
"Yeah, I'm fine, I'm just tired. That's all, working hard and not getting enough sleep." The Landlord replied, rubbing his head and eyes.
"Oh? But what happened to everyone else? They're near the wall, which has blood over it!" Hilary exclaimed, throwing her arms in exasperation.
"Are my painters sleeping on the job again?" The Landlord stomped over outside the office.
Hilary pursued him, while the Landlord marched over and tapped on the other people to wake them up. The people revealed to be painters, woke up, rubbed their eyes, and stretched their arms.
"Hey, sleepyheads, have you finished decorating the walls?" The Landlord spoke up, with his hands on his hips.
"We were taking a short break like you always do." One of the painters pointed out.
The Landlord shook his head. "Just because I do that, doesn't mean—"
"Sir, that's not the point!" Hilary interrupted.
"What's wrong?" The Landlord asked, turning his attention towards her. "Are you ok?"
"Stanley and Jordan are in danger,"
"Who?"
"How can you not remember? They're in the same apartment as me!"
The Landlord took out some files from the cabinet and checked some of the papers with scribbles and names. "I don't know or see anyone of that name. Nobody's been here for—"
"Upstairs!" Hilary thundered. "Hurry and follow me before it's too late!"
Hilary ran upstairs as the others followed her toward Jordan's room. The Landlord reached over to the knob and opened the door before entering inside. Hilary shut her eyes as she walked over herself. To her surprise, she heard the door click. Wasn't it locked? She opened her eyes and found the area clean and spot-free, with nobody in sight.
Hilary's head jerked from the side as she searched all over for anyone present. Where did they go? What happened over here? The Landlord and the painters looked around, scratching their heads in confusion about the whole situation. She marched over to grab the Landlord from the shirt collar and shook him, ordering him to throw a search party.
"Calm down; we need to stay calm about this..." The Landlord brought up. "Besides, there doesn't seem to be—"
"I know I'm not crazy." Hilary let him go and sighed. "They got to be around here somewhere." Hilary looked down at the ground and tapped her foot while placing her hand on her chin. "They couldn't have been that far away from…” Her face lit up. “What if they were still outside?" She sprinted out of the room.
"Hey, wait!" The Landlord extended his hand to try and stop her. He was too late, as she had already left his sights.

Cultivation Anomaly
Follow the journey of an individual given a classic cheat trope in a cultivation world. What does a man do when he finds himself unsure of who he really is yet is given a cheat? What really happens to a cultivation world when it is overrun by MC level characters? Is the cultivation world just run by cruel young masters, short-sighted elders and uncaring experts? Note: Tags may be removed or added to this story as it progresses. For example, I added the harem tag because I wasn't sure if it would appear so be forewarn. Also, productive feedback is always appreciated even it may be ignored. Note 2: Original idea inspired by "Arrogant Young Master Template A Variation 4". I wanted to do something similar but have a more gritty realistic feel. The system SHOULD differentiate as the story goes on but if it doesn't it means I need a rewrite. Either way, read AYMTV4, it's great. Note 3: If you give criticism to be helpful, please try to be descriptive, specific, and focused on making my story better, not changing the story to how you would write it. I'm Always Talking to Myself
My name is Zach. I’m a typical bland featureless protagonist type. The kind of guy who has purposefully few defining characteristics so that people can project whatever they want on me. Like Luke from Star Wars or what’s her name from Twilight. Most main characters are like me. Kind of flavorless blank slates because we all secretly doubt that we’re Harrison Ford, but pretty much anyone could be Mitt Romney. Yep. Yes indeed, I do spend basically my entire life running an internal dialog to no one. Usually I’m imagining that there are people listening. Like maybe philosophers from Ancient Greece, or researchers from another planet who act suspiciously like the characters from that Instagram comic with the aliens. Stupid Instagram comedians stealing my internal monologue and turning into a wildly successful enterprise which I would imagine has a vibrant merch dropshipping arm and hundreds of thousands of daily dopamine hits for loyal followers. I basically spend all of my time explaining random things to imaginary people (and aliens, and animals, and household items which have inexplicably gained sentience and frankly have some concerns about this whole existence thing). Honestly, it’s both highly entertaining to me, in that it makes me think about why we humans do all of the bizarre things that we do, but also horrifically exhausting and kind of makes you feel like you’re either, worst cast, losing your grip on reality, or best case, becoming Abed from Community. Anyway, I’m sure that I have some distinguishing characteristics, but, in the interest of hypnotic suggestion I’m choosing to omit them until I’m pretty sure that you have subconsciously come to identify with me, or until I feel like it. (By the way, in case I forgot to mention it, a higher power called Aww Thor or something told me to say that this is a slice-of-life comedy adventure and that it's set in a fantasy world with isekai and LitRPG elements.)
