Chapter 52: Two Paths

Everyone stood in place with their mouths agape. All of them stared at the creature that took form. A creature so terrifying, their tales still inspired fear for Xothicans centuries later. A creature that both worlds knew as a Dragon.

Artorius stretched his newly formed limbs with audible cracks. In this time, everyone used their Identify skills to learn about the beast before them.

"You will all know my fury!" Artorius roared.

Artorius breathed in a deep breath and his chest puffed out.

"He's preparing a breath attack!" Tala yelled. She quickly casted Bubble Shields around each team's locations.

Artorius swung his head downwards and opened his mouth. Dazzling white flames spewed outwards towards everyone.

"Get down!" Garza ordered. "Stay in the shield!"

The white flames torched the entire area instantly turning all plant life into ashes. The soil was melted and turned to molten glass. The Bubble Shields flashed as they took the flame damage. As soon as the breath attack ended, the Bubble Shields gave away. Tala fell onto her knees from exhaustion.

"Tala!" Sylmae cried out. She crouched down and placed her hands on her shoulder.

"I-I'm okay, I'm okay," Tala huffed. "It just took a lot of my Mana to hold those shields. He's so powerful."

Sam took out her grenade launcher and lobbed off several grenades that hit Artorius in the side of the neck. He grunted in pain. Artorius quickly recovered and charged towards Garza's team.

"Spread out!" Garza ordered.

Her team ran in opposite directions to just barely avoid Artorius slamming down on their location. Artorius spun around and his tail hit both Sam and David. They both were sent a large distance before skidding across the ground.

"I'm going to do something really stupid," Tom said to his companions.

"You make it sound like you do anything different," Vivian teased.

Tom teleported on top of Artorius' and grabbed onto him. Knowing that Artorius' armour was gone, Tom knew he could use his teleport ability could affect him. In that instance, Tom and the Dragon vanished from the field.

Tom and Artorius found themselves on the surface of the moon. The location was about half a kilometer from the established moon base. The air in Tom's lungs immediately escaped him and he found his Stamina rapidly drain. The tears in his eyes and the saliva in his mouth began to boil. Artorius immediately reacted and flipped over and slammed the top of his head into the ground. Tom was caught off guard by the Dragon's incredible speed. The impact caused Tom to briefly black out.

As soon as his consciousness returned, he found Artorius had his talons wrapped around him while holding him to the ground. Artorius stared directly at him.

"I should have expected you would try something like this," Artorius said.

Tom was surprised to see that Artorius' mouth didn't move. With that fact and that they were in an air-free environment, Tom assumed that Artorius could use some form of telepathy in his Dragon form.

"Had you used this spell on anyone else, it would have guaranteed you victory. My speed is beyond what you are capable of reacting to." Artorius chuckled. "It seems we are at an impasse. I need to go back to Earth and so do you. Tell me. Do you believe that your Stamina will outlast mine?"

Tom thought on Artorius' words and weighed his options. He seriously considered sacrificing himself to ensure Artorius' defeat.

"If you don't teleport me, I'll just use the nearby Portal and leave through there," Artorius further argued. "I'd just rather keep to the shadows than reveal myself to the world."

Tom screamed in his head as he hoped he would die before he could think of that option. He severely underestimated Artorius' Stamina and intelligence.

"Time is running out," Artorius mocked.

Tom tried to scream "fuck" but the vacuum of space prevented any noise from coming out. He used Fast Travel to teleport the two of them back to Earth.

Back on Earth everyone were fighting the last of the mercenaries. The appearance of Tom and Artorius immediately grabbed everyone's attention.

"Tom, what the fuck?" Sam yelled.

"I'm sorry," he said while coughing. "It didn't work."

Artorius puffed out his chest and his mouth opened. Tom saw a bright light come up through his throat.

'This is going to hurt,' Tom thought.

Just as Artorius was about to spray his fire, a torrent of water blasted him directly in the mouth. The force of the attack diverted Artorius' head and his flame attack shot upwards harmlessly.

"We got you covered, Tom," Vivian said as she charged in. She slammed her hammer into Artorius' leg with every buff she could apply to herself.

Artorius cried out in pain and he released Tom from his grasp. Reia got in and pulled him up to his feet and dashed backwards with him in her arms.

"Are you okay?" Reia asked him.

"A few broken ribs, I think," Tom replied. "Other than that, pretty alright."

"Tom heal up," Sylmae said to him. "We'll keep this bastard busy."

Sylmae charged forward and let loose a series of arrows at Artorius. One of out every five arrows actually penetrated the Dragon's scales. Tala stood by her side and unleashed mixtures of different magics to catch Artorius off guard.

"Bravo, Charlie, take care of the remaining mercenaries," Laura Garza ordered. "We'll assist Tom's team."

Sam aimed her minigun and unleashed its fury upon the Dragon's side. David aimed his sniper rifle at the Dragon's face. Chris used his SMG and Laura used her assault rifle to aid Sam's assault.

"Insignificant insects!" Artorius roared.

Artorius spread his wings and quickly flew up out of sight. Everyone stopped fighting to watch Artorius fly up into the darkness of the night sky.

"That doesn't bode well," Chris said.

Several lights appeared in the sky. The lights quickly multiplied in number until there were dozens of lights. These lights then began to grow in size. It took a few moments before everyone on the ground realized they were plummeting fireballs.

"Incoming!" Garza yelled.

Everyone on the ground ran in different directions to avoid the coming barrage. The fireballs impacted the ground in rapid succession. Each impact resulted in a massive explosion.

Reia noticed one fireball heading towards Tom and her while she was helping him heal. She quickly picked him and and flew away just in time to avoid the attack.

Vivian and Sylmae were ready to move out of the way of the incoming fireball, but Tala grabbed them both by the shoulder and said, "I got this."

Tala raised her staff up and yelled out, "Dispel!"

A wave of energy launched upwards from her staff and nullified the fireballs above the three.

"Oh my goddess, that was amazing, Tala!" Vivian yelled.

"Th-Thanks," Tala said while gasping for breath. She put in a massive amount of Mana into the spell to be able to dispel the fireballs.

Further down the area, the other soldiers ran to dodge the attacks.

"Keep moving!" Garza yelled into her comm. "Dodge these attacks and then counter attack."

The remaining mercenaries were already demoralized by their losses to the UNDF. The fireballs broke them and made them all go into a panic. Without access to the SYSTEM, the mercenaries were only able to run as fast as a very fit Human. The fireballs bombarded their location and incinerated them.

Another fireball impacted in the area of Petrov's team. The explosion tore the soldiers apart and then turned the remains into charcoal and ash.

"Shit! Bravo is down!" Azikiwe yelled over the comm. "Bravo is down!"

The fireball barrage ended and Artorius swooped down from the sky and flew across the area.

"We need to take this guy down and fast," Garza said over the comm. "We cannot handle another attack like that. Any ideas?"

"I-I think I have one," Tala said.

"We're open to anything at this point," Sam said.

"I read about it in old books about the Dragon War. Dragons have a special organ sac in their chest. In front of the lungs. It's where its magical gasses for its elemental breaths is stored. Cutting it open and then setting off the gas will cause fatal damage. This method was used by the Crimson Warriors to fight Dragons."

"That sounds crazy," David said. "Let's do it."

"I'm loving the idea," Vivian said.

"If you said it worked for the Romans, it'll work for us," Garza said. "Focus fire on Artorius' wings. We need to ground him. Once down, Tom's team will go in to open up his chest."

Artorius turned around and flew back towards everyone.

"Clip his wings!" Garza ordered.

The UNDF soldiers fired their weapons or launched fireballs towards Artorius' wings. Tom's team unleashed their magic spells alongside Alpha and Charlie. One of Tom's Lightning Strike attacks actually combined with one of Tala's Fireballs to create a new party skill.

By combining one person's Lightning Strike with another person's Fireball, you both created an electric ball of fire to cause both lightning and fire damage.

Artorius' wings were engulfed in many different elements. He roared in pain and quickly dived towards the ground. Artorius impacted the ground and immediately rolled towards Alpha and Charlie. The two groups dodged out of the way of the rolling Dragon and continued their assault on the beast.

Artorius managed to extinguish the elements that engulfed his wings and stopped his roll. His wings spread out and displayed the damage they suffered. There were numerous burns and exposed tissue all over the wings. Artorius grunted in pain from the injuries he sustained.

"I've decided," Artorius growled. "The Xothicans will continue to live. The rest of you will die!"

"This is your time, Tom," Garza said over the comm.

"Got it!" Tom replied. "Syl, Tala, shoot at his face to keep him blinded."

Tom and Reia ran towards Artorius. Vivian joined their charge and extended her hammer into its warhammer mode. Syl's arrows and Tala's magical attacks collided with Artorius' face in a barrage which caused him to rear his head back.

"He's open!" Syl yelled. "Get in there!"

"Your leg feeling better?" Vivian asked as she swung her warhammer towards the same leg she hit earlier.

Artorius let out a pained howl as the scales around his leg cracked. He reared up even higher.

"I guess not. Reia, Tom! Now!" Vivian used War Cry to boost Tom and Reia.

Reia charged forth with her spear and unleashed Flurry upon Artorius' chest. Her spear jabbed at an impossible speed and each landed attack caused the scales to partially crack.

"Time to end this! Spiral Thrust!" Reia launched her spear forward with a twist in her wrist. Air whirled around the weapon as it thrust forward making it appear like a tornado was in Reia's hand. The attack collided with Artorius' chest and the area of impact exploded.

The soft tissue under the scales was exposed and some blood poured from where the scales were once planted. Tom went in with his sword and stabbed it into Artorius' chest. He dragged the sword downwards to create a meter long slit hole. Artorius scream and then swung his wings to get off of the ground. The wounds its wings suffered were already healing. Artorius flew up at least ten meters off of the ground.

Artorius breathed in as he readied another breath attack. As his chest puffed out, gas spilt out through the hole left behind by Tom's attack.

"Syl, Tala!" Tom yelled. "Do it!"

Tala casted Fire Enchant on Sylmae's bow. Sylmae drew an arrow and used Focus to slow down time around her. Her sight focused entirely on the hole in Artorius' chest. Her fingers released the bow string and the arrow flew forward. Everyone was quiet as the arrow flew through the air.

The arrow went into the hole and lit the gas. Artorius' chest exploded in a large ball of white fire. Everyone held their arm up to protect their eyes from the bright light. Artorius fell from the sky and landed on the ground with a loud thud.

With the light gone, everyone looked back at the scene before them. Artorius was on the ground with close to half of his chest gone. Blood poured out of the hole and pooled on the ground next to him.

Tom cautiously walked over to Artorius who was still breathing but with great effort. Its exposed lungs were still expanded with each breath. Each one was strained and raspy. Reia, Vivian, Tala, and Sylmae joined him at his side. They all had their weapons ready in case Artorius tried to attack.

They approached Artorius' head. His eyes opened which cause them to jump back a step.

"Y-You have beaten me," he said. Artorius' voice only appeared in their heads. "With everything I had built up, you were victorious... Could it be because of the path you walk?"

They looked at Artorius' Status and found that he was bleeding out fasted than he could heal. Artorius was on Death's door.

"I had good people around me," Tom said. "People that I wanted to protect, and people who fought by my side with all their hearts. People who believed in me and who believed in what they fought for."

"I have tried to follow the path you followed, but I wasn't able to stay on it. I have been betrayed by people who I had trusted my life to." Artorius lazily blinked his eyes. "Everything I had done up to this point was to ensure Humanity's survival in the coming new age. It wasn't for my vanity. We Humans were without gods for our entire existence in a world that constantly tried to kill us. That gave us a strength that no other creature can even compare to. As time went on, I saw that peace was an inevitability. With peace there would be no more wars. Without wars, our ability to endure and survive would weaken. To survive the future, we had to keep that warrior instinct."

"I understand what you were doing," Tom said. "I don't agree with it, but I understand. However, if Humanity is as strong as you believed it to be, we should have found a different way to prepare for the future instead of constantly fighting each other."

Artorius made a throaty chuckle. "Maybe... I was a warrior, so this was the only path I was capable of. Maybe your path will lead Humanity and Xoth to a brighter future. You have won the right to find out. You all have a great responsibility on your heads now. Sylmae, Reia, Tala, Vivian, and Tom. You must find the other Elementals and protect this world and every world. I wish you the greatest luck in your endeavours."

The Xothicans still had a sour look on their faces despite his kind words.

"My legacy is now yours. Learn everything you can from it. Use that knowledge to grant you victory."

"Thank you," Tom said. "But don't expect us to cry for you just because you said a few decent things before your death."

"Hmph. I would be disappointed in you if you did."

Artorius closed his eyes a final time and his breathing stopped.

Everyone stared at the dragon corpse, all in shock over the powerful beast they managed to take down together. Sam stepped forward and yelled at the top of her lungs, "Victory!"

"Oooaaaah!" everyone roared.

The Xothicans joined in the cheer and group hugged each other and Tom. Tom was solemn and quiet. He was mostly exhausted from the battle and couldn't summon the energy to yell out in joy. Tom just embraced his lovers around him and enjoyed the moment.

Everyone's celebration was ended by Garza who said over the comm, "Good job, everyone. You all should be damn proud of what you accomplished here; however, we have a short time table. First, we need to gather Bravo's remains. They deserve a proper burial. We then need to head back to HQ and report our success. With Artorius dead, it won't be long before the other members of Umbra learn of it. We need to start our new operation to capture all Umbra members and to eliminate Wendigo as soon as possible."

On a distant hill, an observer watched the events that occurred with great displeasure. Mordiggian growled in frustration, "Even their most capable member of their specie is incompetent! There's no more time to find other allies. I'll have to rescue Wendigo and finish the ritual myself."
