Chapter 24: Reunion, pt. 3

Tom sat on the bench in his front yard while hunched over his phone. CBC news was playing on the screen. While watching the news, he heard yelling coming from the house. As much as he wanted to make sure Reia was okay, he knew it was best to let those four catch up and sort things between them. He kept his attention on his phone.

CBC was reporting the incident at Trevor's Peak, Colorado. Information about the situation has been scarce for the last five days. Finally, the US military was ready to explain what happened.

"I am Premal Bhan with CBC news. A US Military spokesman has released a report to the public regarding the situation in Trevor's Peak, Colorado. According to the report, giant spiders attacked the town resulting in hundreds of civilian casualties. While the military were successful in exterminating the giant spiders, they suffered twenty deaths and the destruction of three tanks. Liberty party nominee Samuel Hawke offered harsh criticism of President Forest's handling of the situation."

Due to the nature of the elections back in 2016, new parties rose in popularity and power. Many of them backed by empowered interest groups. The Liberty party was among those parties that rose to prominence. The primary for the party ended quickly with Senator Samuel Hawke winning every state he came across.

The video of Bhan was quickly replaced with footage of Hawke sitting on a wooden chair in a small light brown room.

"The President has failed the American people," he declared. "He sent in our soldiers woefully unprepared into Trevor's Peak and it has resulted in an unmitigated disaster. President Forest has been more than willing to rely on a vigilante to handle the crisis facing our world. Look where that has taken us. We have all seen the footage of Thunder and his monster companion. They're gone. And in the void they have left, we now have seen Phoenix grow more powerful with abilities beyond our understanding. The President's fumbling and misguided decisions has brought us to the edge of annihilation. Now as Americans, we have to take action, because President Forest won't."

The video switched back to Premal Bhan.

"When later asked what are his plans were with dealing with the situation facing the world, he stated that he 'plans to increase military spending and pull out every military personnel around the world to fortify the United States against further monster attacks.' Following his comments, Senator Hawke's polling went up by five percent."

Tom heard the door of his house open. He looked up from his phone and saw Reia leaning out of the house with a big smile on her face. Tom turned his phone and placed it back into its case. He hopped to his feet and walked over.

"You okay?" he asked her. Tom noticed her eyes were a little bloodshot.

"I'm great," she replied. "We just had a lot to catch up on. Lots of tears."

Reia's stomach growled.

"I see I'm needed," Tom said while raising a brow. "I'll get to cooking right away. It's about the only thing I'm good for." He walked inside and felt Reia grab his ass.

"Not the only thing you're good for," she laughed.

Tom entered the kitchen and saw Tala, Syl and Vivian sitting at the island counter. They looked in his direction as he entered the room then immediately looked away awkwardly.

'What the fuck were they talking about?' he thought.

"Before anything, I want to formally welcome you all to Earth," he declared. "Any friend of Reia is a friend of mine. You all may stay in my home for as long as you want. There are some ground rules though. Reia and I have been maintaining a secret identity. Whenever we go out, I apply a disguise to her to look like a human. I'll have to do the same for you all. Also none of you can use magic in public. I'm sorry about this inconvenience, but technically speaking, our laws apply to Humans only. Even our rights are called Human rights. That technicality could see any of you detained and interrogated without the same rights and privileges that any Human civilian would be granted."

Dread came across Syl's, Tala's and Vivian's faces.

"Rest assured I will make damned sure that won't happen to you all. I will fight to assure that the rights of Xoth citizens are recognized." Tom looked to Reia and asked, "Did you tell them?"

"I did," Reia answered.

"Fighting to save lives is a good way to get the people of my world on your side," Tom said. "Reia has been helping me protect lives under the alias Aurora. I go by Thunder on the field. Now this isn't going to change the world by itself, but it is a start."

"Uh, Tom, about that," Reia interrupted. "They want to help us in our missions."

"Wait, really?"

Syl, Tala and Vivian nodded.

"You three do know that you don't have to fight, right?"

"I told them," Reia said. "Vivian is an adventurer so she's willing to fight to level up."

"And save lives," Vi added. "Don't forget that."

"And save lives," Reia laughed.

"And Sylmae and Tala?" Tom followed up.

"When Reia told us what she has been doing since she arrived here, we were fairly upset," Syl said. "We don't want her to get hurt. Hearing that she almost died several times in just a month of arriving here..." Syl's hands curled into balls.

"We're powerless to try and stop her, but we're not powerless to help her," Tala added. "We want to fight by her side and do everything in our power to keep her safe."

"Alright," Tom said nonchalantly. "I guess we're a team now. So the first step is we should show each other our status screens. From there we can get a good idea how we can mesh our abilities together on the battlefield."

"I already showed them mine," Reia told him.

"Then I'll start first. Show Full Status."

The three's eyes moved back and forth reading his status screen. Tom then noticed Syl's and Tala's cheeks blushed in colour. Vivian smiled widely and bit her lower lip. He knew exactly what they read.

Tom rolled his eyes and said, "Close Window. Anyone else like to go next?"

"I'll go," Vivian said. "Show Full Status."

"Earth-based?" Vivian said. "Not Xoth-based?"

"I guess your status updated coming to Earth. Weird... I guess it makes sense since you're on a different world. Now you have Rock Throw and Earth Manipulation?"

"Earth Manipulation came from Rock Throw when I reached Intermediate level."

"So you can move the ground?"

"Yup. It's useful to unsettle the ground underneath opponents' feet or the create a wall as cover."

Tom nodded thoughtfully. "I see you're level fifteen. How long have you been an adventurer?"

"A little over two years."

"And you're only level fifteen?"

"Not all of us get exclusive missions and gifts from a goddess," Vivian said in an fake annoyed tone. "Or have the ability to instantly teleport to any location they want."

"Sorry! I didn't mean to offend."

"It's alright," Vivian assured him. "Look, here's how it works as an adventurer on Xoth. You start off at the lowest level: Rank Ten. You usually start off with little to no equipment so you begin with low level missions. Gather herbs, deliver messages. They offer little experience, but they do pay. Took me two weeks to get to level two doing herb collection and deliver missions. Eventually you rise in level and get better equipment. Better equipment means you can take better missions. Better missions get you more experience and money."

Tom tapped the counter a few times before saying, "Really spoke with my foot in my mouth. Sorry." Eager to switch topic, Tom followed up with, "Would either Sylmae or Tala like to show their status before I say something else really stupid?"

Both Reia and Vivian giggled.

"I'll go next," Sylmae said. "Show Full Status."

"Oh my god," Tom muttered. "You have been busy."

Tala blushed and squirmed in place.

"The skills you have. The amount of them. Incredible doesn't even begin to describe it. Even your Alchemy and Enchanting skills alone would be amazing."

"I learned them from the books I read," Tala explained nervously. "It takes a lot of time and effort."

"The amount of effort you must have put into learning all these skills is unimaginable. You are amazing."

"Nya!" Tala yelped. "Thank you."

Reia watched as Tom looked through the statuses of her friends and complimented their skills. She was cheering internally. 'That's it. Keep up that charm.'

"Thank you for showing me what you can do." Tom clasped his hands together and said, "Now, I'm sure you're all really hungry so I won't delay breakfast any longer. I'll cook up some french toast. Just need some eggs, bread, cinnamon and maple syrup."

As Tom gathered the ingredients needed, Reia sat down next to her friends.

"Tom, when talking with my sisters earlier, they mentioned something unusual," Reia said.

"Oh, yeah?" he replied as he cracked eggs into a dish.

"Apparently on Xoth, I've only been gone for three days."

"Pff. What?" he scoffed. "You told me that days on your world are as long as they are on my world. More or less."

"Exactly. For some reason, while several weeks have passed on this world, only three days passed on Xoth. I thought that you might know how this happened."

"Well, I'm not exactly an expert of how the flow of time works but if I were to take a stab at it, I would guess that your world's time moves slower than my world. Relatively. Three weeks in three days. If that's the case then that means that while it'll take one year in our time for our worlds to fuse... For your world that's fifty-two days. Well, forty-eight days now."

Tom finished dunking the bread in the egg yolk and started cooking them in a buttered pan. He turned around and asked, "What was the condition of your world before you were transferred here?"

"Well, the storm over the mountains has been growing since it appeared several days ago," Sylmae answered. "That was when Reia went to investigate before she disappeared."

"Anything else?" Tom asked. "Anything unusual?"

"Nothing much more than that," Vivian said. "After Sylmae and Tala exhausted all attempts trying to get the city guard to look for Reia, they went to the Adventurer's Guild to put up a request. I, being an old friend of theirs, took on the quest. No pay. We left as soon as we could and before we were teleported, we came across a cyclops corpse."

That tidbit grabbed Tom's attention.

"A cyclops corpse, you say?"

"Yeah, it looked like it had its neck broken and head bashed in. Couldn't have been dead longer than a few days."

Tom's face drained. "Oh..."

"What?"

"That's the cyclops that Tom killed a month ago," Reia concluded. "I told you all that Tom had to take a test to access the SYSTEM. Defeating an Obese Cyclops was his test."

"How in goddess' name did you defeat an Obese Cyclops?" Vivan asked Tom.

"I tricked it into falling into a hole which broke its neck," Tom replied. "It became paralyzed so I finished it off by smashing its head in with the heaviest rock I could hold."

"That's extremely impressive, especially for someone who wasn't connected to the SYSTEM at the time," Vivian noted.

"Thanks. Now you said you found the cyclops right before you were teleported?"

"That's right," Syl answered.

"I was at the site where I killed it when you three fell on top of me. If that is the case..." Despite compiling information since the troubles began, Tom always concluded that the appearances of monsters were random like the lightning-filled clouds that proceeded them. The information that Vivian provided made something click in his head. Dots connected and an image appeared. Tom quickly ran off.

"Where is he going?" Tala thought out loud.

Tom was gone for just a minute before he came running back with two large rolls of paper and a thick book. He flipped the french toast and then tossed the two rolls on top of the counter. Tom unfurled the two rolls on the counter island. One paper was a map of Xoth. The other was a map of Earth. On the map of Earth were dozens of dots with a number next to each of them. The most numerous of the dots were red. The second most numerous were coloured in green. There was one dot that was white.

"This is a little side project I've been working on," Tom explained. "I have been tracking every appearance of monsters. The red dots are the appearance of monsters during test day. One hundred locations. After the test concluded, the monsters were transported back to Xoth. The green dots represent monsters that have appeared in the month of May."

"What does the white dot represent?" Syl asked.

"The appearance of a Xoth-born person," he answered. "Till now, I've only been tracking the appearances of monsters just for records. With your information, I may have made another discovery. Reia could you sprinkle that cinnamon on top of the french toast while I do something?"

"Sure," she replied as she got out of her chair.

Tom opened the book he had and placed it on top of the Xoth map. There were multiple pieces of paper with numbers on them that stuck out of book. Each piece of paper acted as a book mark for monsters that have appeared on Earth.

"Is that a bestiary," Tala asked while leaning forward.

"It is," Tom replied. "I use this book to help me keep track of the monsters that have appeared. That's what the number paper slips represent. Check this out."

Tala leaned closer as Tom opened the book to the page about cyclopes. He then pointed to the Xoth map.

"As it turns out, this location on Xoth is where cyclops can live. Around the area where you found the corpse."

Tom placed a red dot on the Xoth map with a marker that he pulled out of his pocket.

"Goblins," he said as he placed another dot. "Giants. Werewolves. Arachne. Golemns. Harpies. Horizon Dwellers. Sand Worms. Salamanders."

With every monster he announced, Tom placed a new dot on the map.

"While these aren't the only locations these creatures can appear at," Tom said. "These locations are important. Watch."

Tom dragged the Xoth map over the map of Earth. He lined it up where the first two-thirds of the Xoth map covered the last two-thirds of Earth's map. The paper of the map was thin enough to make the map of Earth slightly visible underneath.

Tala's eyes widen when she saw the image overlay. "The dots match!"

"Exactly. I think I understand what is happening now."

Sylmae and Reia were surprised to see Tala being so talkative towards Tom. Reia realized what got Tala's attention and enthusiasm. Tala has always been interested in knowledge. Her love of books was what got her to get a job at the city's library. By speaking strictly about knowledge, Tom was able to engage with Tala and allowed her to overcome her introverted nature.

Tom looked back from the counter and saw the french toast was ready.

"Those are good, Reia," he said. "Serve them up and pour some maple syrup on them."

"Sure thing," she said as she placed the food on the plates.

The smell of the food was making everyone's mouths water. Reia placed the plates before her friends and then herself. Each of them cut the first piece of french toast and placed it into their mouths. The flavour of the food flooded their mouths.

Back on Xoth, food was fairly basic, especially compared to food on Earth. Spices and sugars were very uncommon and expensive. The most complex food available to the average Xoth civilian was stew. Most high end and complex dishes are usually reserved for nobility or politicians.

Sylmae, Tala and Vivian couldn't help but make pleasurable noises while they ate their french toast.

"I'm glad you're all enjoying the french toast," Tom said as he walked over to the fruit basket and pulled out two oranges. He placed a red dot on each orange and then placed the two oranges in front of Tala. "Pretend that the fruit on the right is Xoth and the other is Earth. Each world rotates, that's how we have day and night. But the way time flows on each of our worlds, how my world rotates will appear faster than how your world rotates."

Tom slowly turned the Xoth orange while flick spinning the Earth orange.

"Now it seems like for our worlds to fuse, our worlds have created a match parameter."

Tom turned the red dot sides of the oranges forward.

"I'm guessing that every time our worlds line up, we get another transfer of monsters and wildlife. I think our worlds are trying to synchronize with each other before they fuse. That might be why it's being done over time and not right away. This is merely conjecture, but it makes sense considering the evidence we have at the moment."

"Tom you really should eat your french toast before it gets cold," Reia reminded him.

Tom looked down and saw the plate of french toast. "Oh, right. I just really got into the discussion." He cut a piece of french toast and scarfed it down. "I've been trying to make heads and tails of this whole world fusion, like the locations of the monster appearances. With what Vivian told me, everything just clicked into place."

"With what we know and what you've told us, it makes sense," Tala said.

Vivian was focused on the food before her. It was quick to disappear from her plate.

"It's been a while since I had anything that good," Vivian declared.

"Glad you enjoyed it," Tom said.

"Now..." Vivian planted her right elbow on the counter and rested her head on her palm. "What are our accommodations? Since we appear to be housemates now."

"Well, I don't exactly have enough beds for everyone here... We'll have to go out for shopping today and get you all mattresses and bedding."

"We're going out into the marketplace?" Sylmae asked.

"More or less," Tom replied. "I'll need to disguise you all as humans, but we'll get you all everything you need. Beds, clothes and such. Reia, do you think you can use your Clothing Reform skill to get your friends some clothes to wear in public?"

"What's wrong with our current clothes?" Vivian asked.

Tom gave the three girls a glance. Vivian was dressed in leather clothes and metal breast plate. Sylmae was in a blue robe and Syl in wore brown linen pants with a rough leather jacket.

"You three kinda stand out," Tom replied.
