Chapter 21: Arac Attack, pt. 2
Across the street from Alpha, Delta was searching a mechanic garage. The front area had one cocooned dead body. After confirming the safety of the room, the squad moved into the garage area. The walls and ceiling were completely coated in webbing. The ceiling had a hole in it that led to a webbed tunnel.
The garage doors were closed shut and were covered in a thin lair of webbing. Some light came down from the lights on the ceiling, but the webbing reduced how much came through.
In the center of the garage area were three spiders. Each of them were roughly the size of a large dog. They were casually eating human bodies. Their fangs slowly moved up and down as they injected their dissolving venom into the bodies.
The soldiers raised their weapons and fired upon the two spiders. The attack caught the spiders off guard and made them jump back. Despite the surprise attack, the spiders were still alive with only a few bullet wounds each. The three spiders hissed and raised their front legs.
The soldiers continued their attack forcing the spiders to move further back. Two of the spiders finally flipped over from their sustained attack. The other spider leaped to attack but was killed mid-air by one of the soldiers using a shotgun blast.
"Sir, Delta here, we had a run in with the giant spiders. They were the size of dogs. Extremely tough, too. They were able to take a lot of bullets before they died."
A loud hiss echoed out from the hole in the ceiling. The soldiers looked up and saw an enormous spider emerge from the tunnel. This spider was much bigger than the ones they killed; easily the size of a car.
"Oh god..."
The spider leaped down from above and landed between the soldiers and the door they came in through.
"A gigantic spider just appeared and cut off our escape route! We need immediate back-up!"
"Laura, here. We're coming. Just hold on."
The soldiers fired upon the giant spider. It shrugged off the attack and slowly moved towards the soldiers. While the soldiers were distracted by the spider, another came in through the tunnel. It jumped down and landed on top of one of the soldiers.
The soldier screamed after the spider knocked her to the ground. The giant spider wasted no time in stabbing the soldier with its fangs. The soldier's screams were cut off as the arachnid's fangs stabbed her through the back and filled her with venom.
One of the soldiers tried reaching for the garage door handle to try and open it but the door was glued to the ground by the webbing.
"I can't get this garage door open! Where's our reinforcements?"
Another arachnid appeared from the tunnel and plopped to the ground. The noises that came from the webbed tunnel indicated that it wasn't the last. Many more were coming. One by one, the soldiers stopped firing from their assault rifles and shotguns and switched to their pistols. None of their attacks seem to affect the spiders.
The original giant spider that cut off the soldiers' escape jumped and grabbed one of soldier. Its fangs stabbed him in the chest killing the soldier before he had a chance to scream.
"I'm out of ammo!" a soldier yelled.
"So am I!"
The new spiders moved casually towards the soldiers. Just when they reached striking range, the garage door shuddered. It then popped open revealing Laura and Sam who both were lifting it.

"Get out!" Laura ordered the soldiers.
Behind the two Slayers were the three tanks with all their barrels aimed at the garage. The soldiers sprinted out of the garage and moved out of the way.
Sam and Laura gave the garage door a shove and launched it upwards. The spiders hissed at the two. One of them leaped forward. Sam held up her grenade launcher and fired off a round that collided with the jumping arachnid. The spider flew back from the explosion.
Laura moved out of the way of the tanks. Sam fired off three grenade rounds as she escaped to keep the spiders confined in the garage.
"Now!" Laura yelled into the radio.
The tanks' cannons roared as they fired into the garage building. The powerful attacks tore through the spiders and caused multiple explosions inside the building. The tanks continued their assault on the spider nest giving the eight legged monsters no respite. Sam joined in on the destruction by unloading every grenade she had on her into the building.
The walls blew out from the tanks' continued attacks resulting in the building to become less stable. It didn't take long before the garage started to collapse. The spiders grunted and hissed from the attacks until they were silenced by the building falling on top of them. The soldiers from every squad cheered as they watched the building collapse on top of the giant arachnids.
"Hold your fire," the LT ordered over the radio.
Everyone watched the pile of concrete and metal with bated breath. Several moments passed before a piece of metal shifted in place and then slid down the hill of rubble. More debris shifted in place as something moved underneath it. Hairy legs burst out from the concrete. It was quickly followed by several more on both sides of it.
The soldiers felt their stomachs drop seeing the spiders still alive. That feeling was quickly alleviated when the giant arachnids fully emerged from the debris showing their physical states. The three spiders were horribly mangled.
The arachnid in the middle had several of its legs torn from its body and one leg that was barely attached to its body. The spider on the right was half burnt and currently had several small fires on its body. The eight legged giant on the left was in the worse shape. Half of its legs were crippled with blood seeping out from the cracks in its exoskeleton. One of its fangs were gone along with several of its eyes.
"Take them down," the LT ordered.
The soldiers raised their weapons and fired upon the three survivors. Unlike before, the spiders were weakened enough for the bullets to have an effect on them. Their bullets penetrated their softened exoskeleton.
The three spiders attempted to escape but bits and pieces of their bodies were torn away from the soldiers' assault. With the death of the first spider, morale returned full force to the soldiers. A second arachnid quickly fell after the first. The last spider tried to escape but the bullets removed all but one of its legs. It pathetically tried to drag itself with its last leg.
Sam raised her grenade launcher and fired a round at the surviving arachnid. The grenade round hit underneath it causing an explosion that split the spider into two. Both parts of its body flew into the air and stayed in the air for several seconds before falling to the ground. The two section splattered onto the ground resulting in its insides spilling out onto the ground.
"Cease fire!" the LT yelled.

The gunfire came to an immediate end allowing the soldiers to see the fruits of their labour. They all stared at the spider corspes and rubble waiting for more activity. Many of the soldiers took the pause in action as an opportunity to quickly reload their weapons.
After a couple minutes have passed, the LT breathed a sigh of relief and said into his radio, "Targets are down. Everyone continue your search. We'll recover and honour the deceased once our mission is complete. Delta, double time it back to our camp and get more ammo. There are also three Javelins back there. Bring them just in case we face more spiders like that."
"Sergeant Garza, I found survivors," Chris announced over the comm. "Two of them."
"Where?" Laura asked.
"The community pool building at the end of the street. I'm sending you the drone's feed now."
The footage played on Laura's hud. She could see the drone looking at a naked young man and woman. The two were trapped in the wall of webbing while facing each other from ten feet apart. It was obvious that they were still alive as they were struggling to free themselves from their webbed prison.
The two were located in what appears to be the pool area of the building. The walls of the room was covered with the white webbing with dozens of dried out corpses. The pool was empty of water, likely from the spiders drinking it.
"Did you find any signs of spiders?" Laura asked.
"Negative, Ma'am," Chris reported. "I gave the building a look over and did not find any signs of giant spiders."
"Lieutenant, did you get all that?"
"I did," he replied. "I'll have Bravo assist escort Smith and you."
"Thank you."
Laura and Sam ran towards the community pool building with Bravo close behind them. As they moved, they heard gunfire from the buildings that Alpha and Charlie entered.
"Alpha, Charlie, what's happening, over?" LT called in over the radio.
"We encountered more spiders, sir," Alpha's squad leader answered. "Just the small ones though. We can handle it, over."
"Same here, sir," Charlie replied. "No bigger than a dog. Our guns are effective against them."
"Roger," LT replied back. "If you encounter the bigger ones, do not attempt to fight it. Draw it out of the building. We'll let the tanks take care of them."
"Yes, sir," both Alpha and Charlie replied.
Sam, Laura and Bravo reached the community pool building. It was covered in a thick layer of webbing. The doors to the building were torn off their hinges. Sam and Laura stood at each side of the entrance and aimed inwards to look for any giant spiders. Laura waved her hand notifying Bravo that it was safe to enter. Bravo quickly moved into the building with their weapons
The layout of the building was simple. There was the front hallway that connected to a front desk room and office. There was also two doors that led the the men's and women's locker room. The locker rooms then connected to the pool area.
The soldiers entered the pool room with extreme caution. They looked in different directions to check for any arachnids. As far as their check could confirm, the room was safe. One of the Bravo soldiers approached the trapped woman.
"Ma'am, can you hear me?" he asked her.
The woman lifted her head up in a daze. It took her a moment to focus before recognizing the person in front of her. She then went into a panic.
"Kill me!" she begged. "Please kill me!"
"Miss, please calm down," the soldier assured her. "You and your friend over there are safe."
The man across from her was also having the same reaction when soldiers attempted to free him. He was begging for death. Their psychosis motivated the soldiers to work harder in freeing them. The webbing made it difficult as their knives were unable to cut through it.
"Nononononono," she whimpered. "Not safe. Please kill me before they wake up. Please kill me. I beg of you, just kill me!"
"Before who wakes up?" Laura asked.
The woman calmed down and her eyes widened.
"It's too late and we can't control it."
The woman effortlessly ripped her right arm out of the webbing wall. Her forearm was mutated into a crimson armoured gauntlet with clawed fingers.
"What the-" the soldier muttered.
The woman's hand swiped at the soldier's head, decapitating him with ease. She then freed her other arm. The soldiers around the trapped man were lucky to be out of his strike range as he freed himself.
"Please kill us!" The woman made one last attempt to gain mercy. "They have full control over our bodies."
Bravo, Sam and Laura slowly backed away as they watched the two. The woman licked her bloody hand. The look of disgust on her face indicated it was against her will.
With their hands free, the woman and man emerged from the wall of webbing revealing their true forms. Both individuals were missing everything below their waist. Instead, their torsos were fused onto the heads of two crimson spiders that were larger than the giant spiders that they encountered at the garage.
In the area where the two's groins were, were the face of the spider with its eight eyes and two pairs of fangs. One pair of fangs were extremely large and pointed downwards. The other pair was half the size and were positioned, pointing inwards, horizontally. Unlike their hairy brethren, these spiders were hairless. Instead they had a glossy armoured crimson shell.
"Oh, god," one of the soldiers muttered under his breath.
"Everybody get out of the building now!" Bravo leader ordered.
The two hybrids turned towards the soldiers. They hissed as their human half screamed in pain. The hybrids charged after the soldiers. These two monsters were much faster than their eight-legged brethren.
The female grabbed one of the soldiers in the back of the group and flung him in the air. The male jumped up and swung his right human arm downwards, splitting the man in two. Rapidly losing consciousness, the man saw the two abominations stand above him. Before he black out, he pulled the pins on two of his frag grenades.
The soldiers managed to escape the building. They heard the explosion from the man's grenades. Laura hurriedly got on her radio and said, "Lieutenant, we need everyone and everything we have."
"What happened?" he inquired.
"We encountered a new spider variant-"
Before Laura could finish her sentence, the front wall of the building, that they escape, exploded. The two hybrids emerged from the building. Any conscious action from their human half was long gone as the look of fear and disgust in their eyes was gone. They were now the eyes of a predator.
The two hybrids reached up to their human mouths and tore away their skin. Their mouths rapidly mutated as their lower jaw split in half and morphed into fangs. Two more fangs grew from the top of their mouth. The hair on their heads fell out during this change.
"Chris, David, I need you to help give us cover fire as we fall back," Laura ordered. "Sam, use your grenade launcher to hold them back until the tanks catch up to us."
"Yes, ma'am!" the three answered.
Bravo quickly moved backwards as their fired their weapons. Just like before with Delta and the giant arachnids, their bullets had little effect on the creatures. Laura's and Chris' weapons also had the same issue as they were using the same 5.56 ammo as their fellow soldiers.
The only soldiers having an effect on the abominations was David and Sam. Sam's grenades were stunning the hybrids giving the other soldiers time to fall back.
David's weapon were chambered in a higher caliber. He focused his attacks on the eyes of the spider body. The abominations screamed in frustration. By now, the other squads managed to catch up and the tanks arrived. Seeing their new opponents, the hybrids split up. The soldiers picked their targets and continued their attacks.
The abominations went behind the buildings on both sides of the streets. Once they got onto the roofs, they jumped up in the air and their abdomens sprayed out several blobs of webbing. The globules stretched as they flew.
"Incoming!" one of the soldiers yelled.
The troops attempted to dodge the attacks. Some managed to dodge the white blobs, some didn't. The webbing hit with enough force to knock them to the ground.
The tanks' turrets were unable to swivel fast enough to track the monsters. The hybrids continued to hurl out webbing blobs as they hopped from building to building while avoiding the soldiers' gunfire.
"Damn monsters, are just wearing us down!" the LT cursed.
Laura looked around to see many soldiers pinned to the ground. She then noticed something about the placing of the spiders' webbing. A lot of the missed shots were placed around the tanks.
'Oh, shit!' Laura cursed in her head.
"LT, tell the tanks not to move!"
"Why?"
"The monsters placed them in a trap! They move, they'll get stuck."
The tanks roared as they tried to reposition to keep up with the hybrid. They then came into contact with the webbing. The white goo spread across the tread of the tanks gluing them into place.
"Nomad One is unable to move."
"Nomad Two is also unable to move."
"Nomad Three treads are out of commission."
"Damn it!" LT cursed. "They planned this! How could they be this intelligent? We need to-"
The lieutenant was hit by one of the web shots and was attached to the ground. His head of completely covered cutting off his ability to breathe.
To add insult the injury, the hybrids jumped down to the streets and rushed two of the tanks. They grabbed underneath them and flipped them. The screams of the tank crew could be heard over the radio.
The third tank tried to swivel its turret but the hybrids escaped before it had a chance to get a target.
"David continue to give us cover, Chris get down here and help us," Laura ordered. "Half the soldiers down here have been webbed to the ground and the other half is almost out of ammo."
"I'm starting to run low here too, Sergeant," Chris replied. "I have one magazine left for my IWI."
"We just need to hold them until Delta comes back with the Javelins. As for weapons... We'll just have to improvise. It's what Marines do best."
Chris' quadcopter drone refolded itself as it reattached to his backpack. He jumped from the water tower and rejoined the other Slayers. The male and female stood on the roof observing them. They then started to spit webbing again. Laura saw a nearby awning that fell off of a store front. She quickly grabbed it and held it up to keep her team in cover.
"We need a plan," Laura stated.
The other soldiers that were free from webbing made a full retreat from the streets.
"Sam, David, how are you doing for ammo?"
The female spider hybrid leaped towards them. Sam popped out of cover and fired off a grenade round. The grenade impacted the abomination and exploded. The explosion flung the female back over the buildings on the street side. The freak screamed as it flew.
"That was my last round," Sam announced. "I just have my pistol left."
"I'm still good for ammo," David replied. "My shots seem to do damage against these monsters but they seem to have an extremely high regeneration rate. I'm watching them heal right away from my shots. We need to do massive damage against them to take them down for good."
"Nomad Two, are you there?" Laura called in over the radio.
"Nomad Two here."
"Are your weapon systems still functional?"
"Main one twenty cannon and fifty caliber machine gun still functional. However, we are down to one shot on the one-twenty and the fifty has only ten percent ammo left."
"Good enough," Laura sighed. "Prep both weapons and aim down the street. Be ready to shoot your target when I say."
"Roger."
"Right now we can deal with the male freak," Laura told her squad. "Chris draw it into the street with all that's let in your ammo. David, once it's in the street I need you to keep it distracted with shots to its eyes, both sets. The tank will help you keep it stunned with its fifty caliber cannon. It will then have a direct shot at it with the main cannon. Understood?"
"Yes, ma'am!" they all answered.
"Go!"
Chris jumped out of cover and started to yell to get the male's attention.
"Hey freak, right here!"
The male hybrid's head turned to Chris. Chris raised his machine gun and fired several rounds at it. The spider growled and jumped down from the building.
"That's it! Come here!" Chris shot at the spider as he walked back.
The spider chased after him.
"David now!" Laura yelled over the radio.
Several shots hit the hybrid in the head. The spider turned to the direction of the gunfire. It screamed as David shot it in the eyes.
"Nomad Two, use your fifty caliber on it while you aimed your cannon at its giant rear end. We'll assist in keeping it distracted."
Sam and Laura came out of cover with their pistols. The four Slayers fired at the spider while the tank's fifty caliber turret roared to life. With attacks coming at it from all sides, the male didn't know where to focus its attention.
"Target acquired," Nomad Two's pilot announced.
The main cannon of the XM1202 tank fired its 120mm round. The round went right through the abdomen of the spider body and through the connection point between the spider body and human body. The two bodies separated finally killing the creature.
"Target eliminated," Nomad Two said. "However, we've expended all our ammo."
"Stay inside the tank," Laura ordered. "It'll be safer. We still don't know where the female is."
An unnatural scream filled the area. Everyone turned around and saw the female. She was further mutated. Her whole human body was covered in the same armoured shell that originally covered her forearms and hands. Her head grew several more eyes around her original pair.
"That's fucked up," Sam muttered.
The female charged towards them.
"Move!" Laura yelled.
David fired several rounds from his perch on top of the water tower to get the female's attention. The hybrid turned and ran towards the water tower that David stood on.
It raised its hands and took a swipe at one of the four metal structures that held up the main water tank. The structure groaned from losing one of its supports. The hybrid moved to another support and did the same. The water tower tilted and fell after losing its supports on one side.
David crouched to keep his balance as the water tower fell towards the ground. He jumped from the structure to avoid getting caught in its destruction. As he soared through the air, the female jumped after him.
"Shit!" David cursed.
The female spider grabbed him in a hug and took him to the ground. David struggled against her hold but found the creature had greater strength than him. The creature drooled as it looked upon its prey.
It opened its mouth ready to attack. It tried to strike forward but was met with a stop sign to the face. The strike was enough to release its hold on David, freeing him.
David looked up and saw Sam holding the stop sign.
"Thanks for the assist," he said.
Sam smiled and handed him a steel pole.
"This is all we could find on short notice," she said.
The Slayers stood side by side with their metal poles. The female hissed and tried swiping at the soldiers. The four quickly moved out of its way and struck its hands. Chris, using a parking meter swung it like a bat sending it to the ground.
"This is Delta," a voice said over the radio. "We have the javelins. We heard what happened while we were gone."
"Delta, this is Garza of Slayer squad. We are currently engaging the last hybrid."
"We can see. We can get a lock but we need to be sure that it cannot duck into the buildings and that your team is at a safe distance."
"I think we can pull this off. Get a target lock on the hybrid and wait for my signal to fire. If we get ourselves killed, fire right away."
"Roger."
"And use all three of them. I'm not risking this thing living past the next several minutes."
The female got up and lunged forward. Chris swung his weapon downwards stopping the creature's attack.
"Surround it," Laura ordered. "It can't attack from all sides."
Chris, Sam and David changed their positions and moved to different sides of the hybrid. As Laura predicted, the hybrid didn't know where to attack as it kept turning from side to side. The Slayers attacked its legs to weaken its movement.
"Sam with me," Laura said. "I'll hit its head from one side. You hit it from the other side. Hopefully we can give it a concussion. David, get its attention."
"Got it, Sergeant," Sam said.
David hit the large abdomen of the hybrid with everything he could muster. The female cried out in pain from the attack. It spun around.
"Now!" Laura yelled.
Sam and Laura swung their weapons at the same time. The two weapons collided with the hybrid's head. The creature was quiet after the weapons hit. It collapsed to the ground.
"Stab your weapons into it and run!"
The squad stabbed their weapons through the head of the hybrid's body and into the ground. After seeing their weapons dig into the ground, the squad immediately ran.
"Fire now!"
The squad saw three launchers fire off down the street. The missiles' thrusters fired off and the three missiles flew upwards into the air.
The hybrid groaned as it regained consciousness and shook its head. It then realized that it was impaled into the ground. The creature struggled to free itself. It heard a rumbling noise coming from above. The hybrid looked up to see three fast moving objects rushing towards him.
Laura and her team reached a safe distance before hearing three successive explosions go off. They looked back and saw a large fire where the female hybrid was trapped.
"Delta, here," a voice over the radio said. "We can confirm through our binoculars that the javelins were successful. The monster is dead."
The Slayers breathed a sigh of relief.
"That's good," Laura said. "I have bad news though. I saw your LT got his head covered in webbing. I think at this time he probably suffocated to death."
There was silence over the radio before the soldier answered back. " I believe you are technically the highest rank individual here."
"I'll need you to continue checking buildings for anymore spiders left over. Have those scientists grab those two spiders I trapped before they find some way to escape. Finally have everyone who is out of ammo help the soldiers in the tanks and who are webbed to the ground."
"Yes, ma'am."
"What do we do from here?" Chris asked Laura.
"We have some more ammo back at the jet," she answered. "Our mission is to clear this town. When we get back, I'm going to have some choice words with the General."

Post-chapter notes:
I actually threw out the last 2/3 of this chapter because I came up with this. Originally I planned to have them face a similar hybrid creature like in this story but call it the Corpse Spider. It would then end with a fight with a building size tarantula. I just came up with this interpretation of Arachne creatures and felt it would be better this way.

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14
