《Rise of the Lich!》Chapter 35 - Scary Report*

“A voice of agony was echoing through the caves. The voice was screaming in pain for hours before it stopped. The voice didn't go silent because the pain he has endured for so many years stopped, but because it realized something. It realized a fact so impossible and so devious that it took him hours to comprehend what was going on.
It screamed.
That was sole fact that made him forget about the pain he's feeling right now, that made him forget his agony.
'What? How is that possible' he thought while still too confused to fully comprehend what just happened.
Then the being within the whirlpool of magic and torture understood something else. Something that was unthinkable for him, yet it truly happened.
'I can see? Is that... a body? How is that possible?' he questioned to himself while looking at his own new body.
It wasn't the same one he used to have. The body that he had in his past was that of a physical weak human, but now he was something different. His once weak body that was broken by the god he forged was replaced by one full of power and energy! His once pale skin has turned dark blue with white markings all over it.
At this moment, the agony came back. He screamed and cried out of pain and happiness at the same time while he willed his body to leave the whirlpool. He crashed against the floor of the dark cave after escaping his eternal prison.
And then, he laughed. Would someone have been there they would have probably ran away in fear of encountering a madman. But he wasn't mad, not after he changed at least. He turned mad a few hundred years after his torture began, but it was over now. Somehow with his new body came a mind cleared of all poisons, a mind that was restored after it already broke apart and shattered multiple times.
After laughing for a long while he looked at himself once again and finally understood what happened.
'Magic? My body is made out of magic? Pure mana is flowing through my veins. As if I were... a god?' he realized after investigating his body.
He truly turned into a divine being. It seems that every time the magic around him within this whirlpool ripped a bit of him apart, this bit manifested itself within the flow of mana. And so, very slowly but steadily his mind took over the torture device and after having taken over enough, his biggest desire was fulfilled by the magic that had his will in embedded within it.

It formed a new body for him.
Being made out of magic and mana makes one almost immortal. There are very few things that can hurt one with such a body and even fewer things can actually be dangerous for such a god.
'How Ironic,' he thought, 'After killing our gods and creating one that destroyed us all, I myself have turned divine? If the gods weren't dead, I would have blamed them for making such a bad joke.'
And then a shock went through his body. Shock and fear. That was right, they created a god. One stronger and mightier than all the dead ones combined. And this god was still alive.
The young divine abruptly stood up and looked around himself. It was here that the beast watched over him and smirked at his pain. But the cave was empty now. Only he and this whirlpool in the center of it was left.
'W-Where is he?' he asked himself nervously.
After thinking about it for a while he used an ability only a god can activate, the divine sense. While having a rather showy name the skill itself was quite simple. He would simply spread his senses in a wide area around him by using mana. The only difference between this skill and the power of a mortal is that his mana far surpasses normal beings.
After using his sense, he was once again surprised. First of all, the beast was sleeping. Far up high over the clouds, over the heavens and over the stars he resided and slept. The other surprising thing were gods that dwell over there as well, between the stars and the heavens.
'New gods have been born? And this presence... are those, humans? Elves? Dwarfs? They are all back!' he said out loud while being excited about the rebirth of this world.
But then he fell into silence while starting to shake out of fear. Inside his head was a question, a question he would like an answer for and at the same time feared this answer.
When will the beast awaken?”

*Third Person POV*
Prince Julius is currently reading a report he was given to by his Royal Guard. The report describes a few very unsettling things that were happening within his kingdom. Usually, his father would be the one reading and dealing with such reports but he is currently bedridden because of a major illness.

“What?! You can't be serious! This sounds like a story you would tell your kids in order to scare them or something!” (Prince Julius)
The report is so absurd that Julius doubts it's truth, even though he knows that no lie should be written within it. The young prince is still irritated tough and gets rather angry because of that. This causes the Royal Guard to fear for his life. The last Guard that made a major mistake and angered the Prince was executed after all.
“N-no, I'm sorry but that's the truth my prince!” (Royal Guard)
“*sigh* Alright, then conclude once again what's happening right now all over my god damn kingdom!” (Prince Julius)
It irritates the guard a bit that Julius is already referring to the Human Kingdom as 'his' even though he has yet to ascend the throne.
“Ye-yes my lord! It started a week ago. There were reports of people vanishing all over the eastern region of our beloved nation! And then, a village was attacked by skeletons riding on giant spiders! The undead riders seem to only target small villages and kill everyone inside! The number of victims are already over a thousand sir!” (Royal Guard)
“I still have trouble believing his! There shouldn't be a rouge Necromancer! Also, giant spiders? Where are those supposed to come from?!” (Royal Guard)
“We have no idea sir, but it's a fact that those reports are not false! I have some soldiers sitting outside who were always loyal to us that claim they saw it! They describe the scene as a revelation from hell itself!” (Royal Guard)
“This is unbelievable! We have to find who is guilty of this crime!” (Prince Julius)
“There is more my lord!” (Royal Guard)
“What?! Did you forget to tell me that those spiders had wings and spit fire?!” (Prince Julius)
“N-no my lord. There were also reports about a figure that seems to be leading the fiends. He is described as a mage inside dark robes and with a powerful staff on his side. He wears a skull mask that has a crown attached to it.” (Royal Road)
“Well, this guy is most likely our evil necromancers, isn't he? We need to kill him! We need to take this guy down in order for this madness to stop!” (Prince Julius)
“Should I send our assassins?” (Royal Guard)
“No! They are busy looking for the one who killed my wife.” (Prince Julius)
“Isn't this more important though, my lord?” (Royal Guard)
The Guard immediately regrets what he said and quickly tries to correct himself, but Julius is already in front of him. The prince grabs the Guard by his throat and lifts him up in the air while smashing him into a wall.
“WHAT?! WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY YOU MAGGOT?!” (Prince Julius)
“I'm sorry my lord, my tongue just slipped I didn't mean to say that!” (Royal Guard)
The Guard gives his best to speak up while his throat is slowly being crushed. Already fearing that it's over for him, he finally gets to breathe again when the Prince lets go of his throat and watches the guard sliding of the wall and falling to his knees.
“…Better so. Send the Elementals. Let those assholes deal with this guy.” (Prince Julius)
“Aren't they a bit... to flashy for an assassin mission?” (Royal Guard)
The Royal Guard wasn't wrong there. While the elementals are all A-Class Adventurers of great power, they are also quite crazy. This causes them to be rather hated by others. Usually, they would only be sent to missions that involve killing a large monster or something like that.
“It doesn't matter. They should be strong enough to kill this small necromancer. Just take care of it while I keep searching for Yunas killer, got it? Don't bother me again.“ (Julius)
“Yes, Sir!” (Royal Guard)
And with those words the Royal Guard leaves the room and runs to the sleeping quarters of the elementals.

Parallels
Parallels are a constant in life. Our friends' lives often run parallel to ours; we share similar experiences or tastes- perhaps even both. Sometimes, however, opposites attract- and our lives run perpendicular. In that case, we are not attracted by similarities; rather, we are attracted to the differences in others. So, what happens when two parallels are broken apart? What might happen to them? Are they forever doomed to run alongside each other, never seeing one another, never meeting? Or, perhaps, might they be spun about? Could these lines that formerly ran alongside one another meet? Could they possibly be set perpendicular? Any feedback is welcome, so long as it is constructive. Also, you may not use any characters, ideas, places, or what have you that I present here without my explicit permission. A note: This is a story which I began over a year ago, but never got around to finishing- it feels about time to really get it going. Now, there are a couple of things about the story, and myself, that need to be said. First and foremost, there's a slow start, but by the third-fourth chapter things should be speeding up a bit. Secondly, in regards to release speed and/or word count per chapter, I make no promises- my schedule is fairly random, and in regards to word count, I will cut off any chapter at any point that feels appropriate to me- that may include cliffhangers, if necessary. I'm not trying to reach a specific word count, I am trying to create a cohesive story, with pseudo-appropriate chapter breaks. This means I will also not rush a half-baked release for the sake of getting a release out. Thirdly, I will make any edits, anywhere in the story and at any time, that strike me as necessary- typically being wording and/or formatting changes, but I may also decide to change major plot points- in that case I would put a notification in the next chapter released. Finally, and most importantly, I am a Christian; this story is intended to at least moderately reflect those values. So, if you particularly dislike any of these things, feel free to look elsewhere, and don't let the door hit you on the way out. God bless, friends.

Must you hunt me so fiercely? Why are you doing this to me?” The Heart does not understand their motives. Perhaps its lack of understanding has something to do with the fact the Heart has no physical limits nor material needs. Why take it from someone, when you can simply will it forth? Just pay for it with mana rent! To make things worse, the real dangers are not from above, nor from below, but from within…

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course.
