《Binary Progression》Volume 8 - Chapter 2: Foresight or Paranoia

“I do not trust that kid one bit…”
Bromy followed Zachary from a distance as the black-haired man made his way through the narrow alleys of Glummington.
“There is no way in hell a bad person will change for the better in a world with magic powers…”
The sky was slowly getting darker as the sun neared the distant horizon.
Quickly and quietly, the druid rushed over to the next corner, poking his head out to see Zachary making his way inside a small building through the old, rickety door.
His curiosity piqued, Bromy made his way to one of the building’s windows.
“What is he planning…?”
With a loud bang, Bromy fell back to the ground, looking up he could see that his attacker was the window, specifically Zachary’s window, which he just opened, and accidental smacked it into Bromy’s head.
“Oh, crap, sorry!” Zachary looked down seeing Bromy covering the bleeding spot on his forehead.
“HA! YOU WON’T TAKE ME OUT THAT EASILLY!” he laughed before making a strategic retreat.
“...ok?”
Uncertainly, Zachary opted to close the window after all.
After confirming that he was in fact still the same personality as before the head trauma, Bromy healed his injury.
“I’ll need to investigate further,” he decided.
Lost in thought, Bromy walked through the dirty streets of Glummington as he heard a familiar voice call out to him.
“Oi! Bromy!”
He looked over, seeing Alex waving him over from across the small, foul-smelling canal running between the two.
“Sup,” Bromy lifted a hand.
Alex gestured to the bag of groceries he held in his hand.
“Pedecree send me out to get some groceries, you should get back to the base soon!”
Bromy shot Alex a thumbs up.
“Sure, I’ll be there in a bit.”
Meanwhile, Bonifacius pierced through the metal with the force of a titan.
Lifting the leaking, dripping foe, he dropped them into the large sack before turning to the next piece of trash on the ground.
“So… we really have fallen this low…” Revenberry lamented, looking at herself as well as Bonifacius picking trash off the streets.
A group of a few people walked past them, pointing and laughing.
Bonifacius laughed.
“Fear not! For in the end a nicer city shall benefit us as well!” he exclaimed, using his sword to stab a can on the ground before tossing it into his sack which was filled with loads of trash.

Revenberry breathed a sigh.
“When you said we’d help people around the town… I imagined something… grander…?” she remarked, lifting a bottle from a puddle of muddy water and into the sack Dylan, the mayor of Glummington provided her and Bonifacius.
“Grander? Perhaps thou should join JohnWillStab and Foxly?” he suggested, gesturing to the duo, dragging a large net which caught all the grossness which floated in the canal.
“WHY DO WE HAVE TO DO THIS?!” JohnWillStab demanded, looking up to Dylan, who sat in a small row boat ahead of them with a notepad in his hand.
“Because you’re undead and you won’t die from touching this water.” Dylan explained.
“THIS IS RACISM!” John cried, not immune to the putrid scent.
He gestured to Foxly who floated face-down in the water beside John.
“LOOK, HE PASSED OUT!”
He flipped the body around revealing that it was in fact not Foxly.
“Never mind, its some other frogman.” John corrected himself, pushing the corpse towards the net of trash.
“How do these even end up in the water?! Who would throw a perfectly good body and or body part into the water?!”
The real Foxly breathed a sigh.
“I was kind of hoping everybody forgot about that whole… undead thing…” he remarked.
John shrugged.
“Yeah, I forgot about you dying altogether.” he remarked, trying to take his mind off their disgusting task.
“Yeah, that’s weird… hold on… I don’t think I was immune to poison…” he began, visibly sweating.
John shrugged.
“We’ll call Bromy later, don’t worry about it.” he replied dismissively.
Dylan looked through his notepad, ticking off the tasks already complete by the group who agreed to help out around town in return for a cheaper guild base.
Naturally, Jordan’s brother remained on the couch at their base.
After the exhausting day of hard labour and unsanitary conditions the whole L.F.T.O group enjoyed an over-sized meal created by their local Pedecree.
“I wonder why Bromy has not yet returned?” Bonifacius wondered, his eyes focused on the front door of the base.
Foxly nodded.
“Yeah, I’ve been meaning to ask him for healing for a while,” he remarked as one of his arms fell to the ground with a thud.
“Huh…” he remarked, glancing down to the diseased limb.
Alex and John who sat beside Foxly pushed their chairs away from the source of disease.
“Doesn’t that… hurt?” Revenberry questioned.

Foxly shook his head.
“Nah, I can’t feel anything since leaving the water.” he explained, patting the part of his shoulder where there once was an arm.
“Why didn’t you ask me to heal you?” Questioned ♛.
A smug smile spread across her face.
“I suppose if a member of my guild was badly hurt I would have no choice but to help!”
Bonifacius nodded.
“Indeed! Crown is a very capable healer!”
The frogwoman grinned from ear to ear, soaking up the complements like a sponge.
Foxly raised both eyebrows, dawning an unimpressed expression.
“This is why…”
He folded his arm.
♛ clicked her tongue, deciding not to heal him after all.
“Plus your healing sucks…” he added.
The air in the room turned cold as John understood what was about to come, as if through a pure bond forged only between fellow adventurers, Alex sensed John’s terror.
They exchange a look and a nod before John and Alex began moving their chairs even further from Foxly who would soon become a target of either a verbal or most likely a magical attack.
Slowly, despite the many, rapid pleas from Bonifacius, ♛ got off her chair and slowly made her way over to the frogman.
“Come now! Let’s not do anything hasty!” Bonifacius advised.
His inability to feel any pain bolstered his resilience to ♛’s threats.
Still seated, John and Alex slowly moved their chairs away from the table and up the stairs, hopping up the steps away from whatever divine punishment was going to take place.
♛ pulled her fist back, Foxly didn’t even flinch as she planted it down on his missing arm-stump, moments later a green light radiated from the wound as it began to recover.
“...uhmm….” a confused Foxly glared at his hand, unsure if ♛ activated the wrong ability by accident.
Slowly, the bone and muscles began to grow as Foxly once again regained the ability to feel pain.
It was like watching a piece cheese melt in a microwave, slow and uneventful.
The light faded as Foxly’s half-healed hand was exposed to the handful of salt ♛ tossed at it.
“EAT SHIT ASSHOLE!” ♛ exclaimed as she began returning to her seat leaving Foxly crying in pain on the floor.
“AHHHH! SHIT! HANG ON!”
Desperate he turned back to ♛.
“W-W-W-WAIT! I’M SORRY! I DIDN’T MEAN IT!”
His pleas fell on deaf ears as ♛ continued her meal, ignoring the suffering party member on the floor.
“DON’T BE LIKE THAT! I THINK YOUR HEALING DEFINITELY IMPROVED!”
♛ shrugged.
“Don’t force yourself, if my healing is so bad, you can just wait for Bromy to get back,” she replied, faking disinterest.
Foxly did his best not to show the flesh-searing pain he was in.
“NAH! REALLY! YOU’RE WAY BETTER THAN BROMY AT HEALING!”
Foxly’s blood turned cold as a visibly exhausted Bromy walked in the door with a yawn, noticing the wound of Foxly’s arm.
“Cool, then I’m heading to bed…” he replied, walking past the speechless Foxly and down into his basement whereupon he stepped over the still tied-up Malagmus and closed the door behind him.
“Well, I guess I’ll have to think about it…” ♛ said reluctantly.
Foxly breathed a relieved sigh, stupidly believing his pain would end soon.
“Until then, why don’t you tell me just how great I am at healing and how it’s definitely the best healing out there.” she suggested.
“Thou should not torment thy ally! Foxly is in severe pain!” Bonifacius exclaimed, considering getting Bromy to heal him after all.
“There-there, I’ll get you patched up!” Foxly heard the unfamiliar voice whisper into his ear as a soothing feeling of relief came from his hand.
In a manner both faster and more painless than ♛’s magic, Foxly’s hand returned to normal.
“Thanks!” he looked up not seeing anybody there.
Confused, Foxly stood up, looking at his newly healed arm.
On the ground beside Foxly, was a small mint.
“What the fuck…?”
The next day, the sound of knocking alerted Bromy to the enemy’s presence outside their front door.
Bromy cracked the door open, revealing Zachary standing outside awkwardly.
“Hey…”
Reluctantly, Bromy opened the door.
“Bonifacius, the antagonist has arrived.” Bromy exclaimed loudly enough to wake everybody in the base up.
He stepped away from the door allowing Zachary to step inside.
“Stop.” Bromy commanded.
“Put your hands up.” he instructed.
Uncertainly, Zachary did as instructed allowing Bromy to inspect the stranger.
“State the purpose of your visit.”
“I… ehh… came to see Bonifacius…” he explained.
Bromy narrowed his eyes.
“Convenient excuse…” he replied mockingly.
Bromy proceeded to feel around the man’s pockets and sleeves.
“I’m keeping an eye on you…” Bromy hissed before walking backwards into his basement.
Moments later Bonifacius descended down the stairs.
“Greetings!” Bonifacius exclaimed with a wave of his hand.
“Hey,”
