《Binary Progression》Volume 7 - Chapter 32: Soup... again? Maybe?

JohnWillStab stood in the quarry swinging his pick up and down.
“It’s been a day already…” he thought.
Foxly was doing the same beside him.
Beside them stood Lorb, also swinging his pick.
“This sure is hard work!” he laughed.
John was doing his best to ignore him.
“Can’t you just like… break us out?!” Foxly demanded.
“That wouldn’t be any fun!” Lorb teased.
Lorb crossed his arms.
“I mean as a god, I must be equally loving to you all, what makes them worse than you in the grand scale of things?” he asked smugly.
“…Slavery…?” Foxly replied.
“Shut your trap and get to work!” one of the guards exclaimed tossing a rock at Lorb, mysteriously a bolt of lighting just so happened to hit him.
“…”
“…”
John and Foxly looked at him with a look of pity.
Lorb rolled his eyes and breathed a sigh.
“Aw, come on guys! Can’t we be friends without me having to do god stuff?” Lorb pleaded.
“It’s not that we keep you around because you’re god… but if I was god, I would help myself escape!” John replied.
Lorb squinted.
“I think your example is off…” he remarked.
Foxly nodded.
“Yeah. if I was god, I’d totally help John escape, too…” Foxly agreed.
JohnWillStab struck some rock with his pick exposing a large deposit of ore.
“Nice!” he exclaimed.
“Yeah! At this rate, we might get extra soup…” Foxly remarked.
John’s victorious expression faded away in an instant.
“Oi, you two!” a voice came from behind.
John and Foxly turned around and saw a massive ogre, so muscular he wasn’t even wearing the striped prisoner shirt.
“Yeah?” he asked,
“I found that first…” he said pointing to the deposit of ore, his expression was fully serious.

JohnWillStab looked to where he was pointing and back to the man.
“Why the fuck did you burry it under all this rock then?” John asked looking visibly upset.
He threw his pick down to the floor with a loud clang.
John placed his hands on his hips in annoyance thinking about all the time he wasted mining only to find somebody else’s ore.
“Come on, let’s find our own ore…” John sighed looking over to Foxly.
“John… quit being an idiot, he’s trying to steal our ore!” Foxly sighed.
The ogre cracked his knuckles sending a shiver down Foxly’s spine.
“What the hell do you mean by steal, eh?!” he demanded.
Lorb stepped between the ogre and Foxly.
“Relax, may not have recognised me, but rest assured, these two are off limi-” Lorb was cut off when he was picked up and tossed against a nearby rock so hard it cracked and revealed more ore.
Several minutes later…
When Lorb opened his eyes a few seconds later he saw Foxly standing before him.
“Hey, y’good?” he asked.
Lorb blinked a few times.
“Y-yeah…”
He stood up seeing the corpse of the ogre with a large lump of ore sticking out of where his head was minutes earlier.
“What happened?” Lorb asked.
John shrugged.
“I gave him the ore he wanted, for some reason he didn’t catch it,”
Lorb breathed a sigh.
“I really do like hanging out with these guys…”
He looked conflicted as he tapped his foot on the ground.
“Mmm…”
“Well, I won’t give you the means to escape… since you already have it…” Lorb began.
“But I will give you something!” he offered.
“Means to escape?” John questioned.
“I can assure you of two things…” he began.
Lorb held up one finger.

“One; every member of L.F.T.O is safe!”
JohnWillStab breathed a sigh of relief as Lorb said those words.
“Two; nobody is coming to save you guys!”
JohnWillStab was back to being nervous.
“What?!” Foxly and John demanded in unison.
“Yeah, Curstl fell down here and got some good ol’ amnesia!” Lorb laughed.
Seconds later a familiar-sounding voice called everyone for dinner.
Like before all the prisoners were led out of the quarry and into the big bench-filled courtyard.
“Greetings!” Bonifacius exclaimed, he was already sitting at the same table as last time, beside him sat Revenberry and Crown.
“Yo…” Crown sighed.
“Hey,” John said sitting down at the bench.
He informed everyone of the good and the bad news Lorb informed them about, speaking of him, Lorb was nowhere to be seen again.
Bonifacius scratched his chin.
“I do hope Curstl is alright… though perhaps a fresh start for her isn’t the worse outcome…” he remarked.
“What’s up,” Bromy remarked walking up to the bench, he was drenched in blood from head to toe, in his hand he was carrying three heads by the hair.
He sat down on the bench adjacent to the one John and the others sat at so as not to bloody their one.
“…”
“…”
“…”
They all looked at him with a mix of relief and concern.
“Bromy… where… is your hat?” John questioned, the fear evident in his voice.
Bromy shook his head.
“It was taken, I’ve slaughtered two quarries already, I’ll get to the rest after dinner,” he replied.
John glanced over to Alex who was sitting at a different table, several other prisoners were chatting with him.
“Looks like he’s having fun…” Crown remarked.
“I don’t think he should associate with those kinds of people,” Revenberry remarked seeing one of Alex’s new friends playing the knife-game with the sharp end of his pick.
The soup man approached their table again.
“Here…” he said placing the bowls on their bench.
He used the big ladle to pour in some soup into each bowl.
This time he stood unmoving, waiting for John to try the soup.
Seeing this, JohnWillStab lifted the bowl and tried some.
“Mm… It’s actually better…” he remarked.
The cauldron man nodded smugly.
“I asked the warden for some salt and he agreed,”
“Yeah, I can definitely taste the difference,” John remarked.
The soup was far from good, but it was considerably better.
The rest of the group tried it as well.
“Mm… yeah… it’s… food-like…” Crown remarked.
“Yeah, what would you give it out of ten?” he asked.
Bonifacius gave the man a thumbs up.
“Thou have done the best thou could! Ten out of ten!”
Crown shook her head.
“Five, the flavour is weird…”
“Five,” Foxly nodded.
John shrugged.
“It has salt, seven…”
“Three… tastes like water, salt and vegetables…”
Bromy sighed.
“Well… it’s soup…” Crown remarked.
“Exactly…” he squinted.
Revenberry shrugged.
“Four…”
The soup man nodded.
“Alright…”
He moved on to the next bench asking for a rating every time.
JohnWillStab glanced down at his stats seeing that strength and stamina increased a fair amount.
Dexterity: 48
Perception: 45
Stamina: 49
Athletics: 68
Strength: 59
Weapon skill: 51
Magic: 18
Intelligence: 24
Luck: 34
Charisma: 5 + 45(Tits)
“All this mining is really increasing my strength stat…” John remarked.
“Yeah, it’s definitely the mining…” Foxly remarked thinking back to the ogre with the bashed-in skull.

The Queen's Guard
Friedrich Schreiner is a proud gefreiter of the Queen's Guard, 2nd Company: the finest fighting infantry on the continent (barring the Temple Guard; but please don't bring that up). Service is honourable but, with the Empire on a peacetime footing, terribly boring. Affairs take a dramatic turn for the worse when a mysterious invader uses a forgotten and taboo magical means to breach the capital, plunging the nation into chaos and endangering the royal family. With events spiraling out of control, Friedrich is entrusted with a critical mission. Will hot lead, cold steel, and his determination be enough to see him through? The Queen's Guard is what I'm calling a black powder fantasy story: it's set in a loose equivalent of the early 18th century (plus or minus a few pieces I decided I wanted or didn't want). Magic exists, but not in a spell-slinging sort of way: it's Earth-shaking undertakings or minor enchantments forged in by master craftsmen, the grand working of a secretive cabal or a slight nudge to the course of a blow. I, the eternal optimist, have a full trilogy in mind. The first book is The Prince's Arquebusier, hence the cover and the title disagreeing! This is my shot at 2021's NaNoWriMo and RR Writathon! I've hitherto been terrible at writing long-form fiction, so this is an effort to break out of that by having some accountability in being supposed to post chapters regularly. Here's hoping it works! I have an outline, but not too much detail. I'll do my best to avoid continuity errors, doing anything glaringly stupid, or otherwise fluffing my lines, but I can't make any promises on that. Please do let me know any feedback! Always happy to improve. [participant in the Nov 2021 Royal Road Writathon challenge]
