《Binary Progression》Volume 6 - Chapter 5: Don't kill the waiter!

Darius, the black-furred swordsman and the witch left the wooden hut in the forest and headed west, hoping not to run into the Paladin again.
"I didn't expect the paladins to get involved..." sighed the witch.
They travelled along the dirt road, as expected, the paladin cleaned up the rubble from the damaged cart so as not to interfere with how the world looks.
Not even blood remained on the road.
"We need to hurry," Darius exclaimed looking up and seeing the cold gaze of the dozen gods on his back.
"Before they throw someone stronger at us..."
After a few hours, they came across a small town, no more than ten buildings in total.
"We should get some food here... can't keep running on edge forever, y'know..." the witch remarked causing a smirk to appear on the wolfman's face.
"Says the witch..." he replied.
"Fair point..."
The two entered the inn seeing a handful of farmers eating and drinking.
"They must be on break..." Darius thought as he wandered over to a nearby table.
The frogman made his way towards Darius, dressed in plain-looking waiter's clothes.
"Hey... what can I get you?" he asked lazily.
Darius patted his pocket feeling no sign of money.
He turned to the witch who shrugged.
"You guys... have money, right?" asked the frogman.
Both Darius and the Witch shook their heads in unison.
The frogman let out a sigh.
"Well, I see you're pretty roughed up, I can offer you some bread and water free of charge," the frogman offered.
"I'd appreciate that..." Darius said feeling his stomach begin consuming itself.
The waiter left to the kitchen and returned with two small loaves of bread and two pints of water.
"Thanks," Darius said grabbing one of the loaves and digging into it.

The bread was tough and dry, the water made it soft enough to be eatable.
Darius looked around the inn, it was a small rectangular building.
He could see the window-like opening to the kitchen as well as the wooden door.
The witch grabbed the glass of water and drank it through her masked and bandaged face.
"Won't you even remove the mask to eat?" asked Darius.
"I'd rather not, it's part of my image," she said dismissively as she somehow ate the bread through her mask as well.
Darius let out a sigh.
"Suit yourself..." he ate the bread and downed the water afterwards.
Darius looked to the witch.
"Alright, hold on, I'll go ask about a cart," Darius said getting off his chair and heading towards the frogman once more, his glass in hand.
"Thanks for the food and water, you wouldn't happen to know if there's anybody heading west soon?" he asked placing the glass on the nearby tray of dirty dishes.
The frogman scratched his chin.
"Uhm... now that you mention it... a few traders are going to be dropping off supplies here tomorrow, their route goes all the way north, so you might be able to tag along..." the frogman said uncertainly.
"A trader, I see... thanks for the inf-" Darius' thanks were cut off by the frogman,
"I doubt they'll take you for free, the one in charge is as shrewd as they come..." the frogman explained.
"I see..." Darius replied hesitantly.
"You can check if any of the farmers need help carrying crops," the frogman offered.
"Mm, thanks for your help," Darius said stepping away from the frogman and heading back to his companion.
"Let's get going, I need to make some money..." Darius explained.

"Money? Why?" asked the witch.
"Some traders are meant to be going through here, with any luck we'll be able to tag along with them, at this rate they'll have to go west unless they plan to go through the mountain range..." Darius explained.
"According to the waiter, they won't take us for free," Darius added.
The witch crossed her arms,
"Yeah, we could work our asses off, or we could just, y'know, threaten the traders,"
Darius crossed his arms.
"Force shouldn't be your first solution," Darius said seemingly displeased with the witch's proposal.
"Says the man who killed the king and like fifty guards in one day..." exclaimed the witch.
"It was either that or death, that wasn't my first resort..." Darius replied coldly.
The witch rolled her eyes, not that the wolfman could see that through the mask.
"Fine, do what you want..."
Darius breathed a sigh.
"If we force everyone to go along with our plan for 'the greater good' we'll be no better than those bastards!" Darius continued, he was getting more and more worked up.
"Dude, chill - I said you could do what you want..."
Darius realised he was being way louder than he needed to, he looked around and saw the entire in looking at him, they heard what he said and were fully aware he was speaking out against the gods.
"You two need to leave..." the same frogman said gesturing towards the door.
Darius wanted to argue but he knew it was futile, he stood up and saw the witch speaking quietly.
"Necrotic bulle-" she was cut off by Darius who planted a hand to her neck causing her to go limp.
The frogman running the shop watched them leave as he walked over to their table in order to clean the bread crumbs they left behind as well as collect the witch's glass.
His eyes fixated on the black spots that appeared on the chair the witch sat on, the wood itself was beginning to rot.
Outside, Darius walked with the witch over his shoulder.
"What the fuck did you do?!" demanded the witch,
Darius let out an agitated sigh.
"You were about to murder the waiter!" Darius exclaimed.
"Was not!" the witch replied.
"..."
"..."
"Maybe a little..." she admitted.
"Well, in any case... looks like we can't stay at the inn... not that I could afford to anyway..." Darius sighed.
The witch looked around and saw a large shed, seemingly abandoned.
"We can stay in that ominous-looking structure," the witch suggested.
Darius looked over to the shed and nodded.
"Guess we have no choice..." he sighed as he jumped over the old wooden fence and made his way towards the shed before it got dark.
"Tomorrow, we'll figure out how to get some money," Darius said uncertainly.
