《Tutorial (The Soul Survivor Series)》Chapter 14

The news of Danny and Alex’s Class evolution was well received and several teams went running down to the Library after lunch to start studying their own Class. A man from Turkey by the name of Hosmunt had taken it upon himself to writing a Player’s Guide for those that would soon follow. He immediately sought out the pair and asked them to explain in detail what they did.
Danny and Alex explained their individual experience with their Class evolution and Hosmunt was thorough in his questions. On Earth, he was a journalist and while he claimed he was just another column in the paper, his questioning had let him grasp the fine details that Alex and Danny didn’t know were there.
As they left the Bellevue to continue searching the City Zone, Ty and Alex tried acting as scouts, running up to each intersection to keep an advanced lookout for any of the Tahloh. They continued pushing farther south, hoping to find out where the Giants were located. They weren’t planning on fighting but it seemed prudent to know where their enemy was.
The rest of the team followed the improvised scouts’ lead, looking for any doors that were different from the ones they already knew of. They were twenty-four blocks away from the Bellevue when they came across a new door. This one wasn’t made out of a material that any of them were familiar with. The black stone seemed to pull in the light around it and the doors handle was cold to the touch.
“Well, if this doesn’t scream ominous, then I don’t know what does.” Toby said as he felt the door handle again.
“Racist fucking System.” Ty muttered.
Rishi, who was standing next to Ty, huffed at Ty’s comment. “How is this door racist?”
Ty pointed out his furry finger at the door. “Just look, man! It reeks of danger and it’s black! Racist!”
Rishi looked like his brain was hurting. Silvia snorted loudly.
“You are so full of shit, Ty!” She laughed. “Knock it off before Rishi has an aneurysm.”
The red panda couldn’t hold in his laughter anymore and Rishi was seriously considering hitting him over the head with his new stone staff.
“Alright. Game faces, people.” Alex called out. “Toby, you’re up. Ty, keep your eyes and ears open. Rishi, keep your golem to the rear in case of sneak attacks.”
“Yes, Sir!” The group said, as they stood at attention and saluted Alex.
“Real fucking funny.” Alex said, trying to keep the smile off his face.
After they finally finished snickering at Alex’s expense, Rishi opened the door and Toby headed in.
Alex could honestly admit that he wasn’t expecting it when they all stood in the lobby, looking at a large sign that said, ‘Williams and Krooks LLP’.
“What the hell is an LLP?” Ty asked.
“Limited Liability Partnerships.” Alex answered. “It’s a law firm.”
“Alright, what’s your bet?” Danny asked. “Snakes or Weasels?”
As it turned out, it was neither. Before anyone could answer, a woman in in high heels and a business suit walked into the lobby. The fact that her skin was purple wasn’t that odd, but the tail that swayed behind her and the horns on her forehead was shocking to see.
“Is that a Succubus?” Toby whispered. Alex nodded.
The Succubus stopped as she noticed the group. When she turned to intercept them, her hips started to sway a little more and her lips were on the verge of a pout. Alex, being the dork that he was, knew plenty about Succubus’, they hypnotized men and fed off them when they let their guard down. Swallowing the lump building in his throat, he bit down hard on his lip, drawing blood and breaking the spell that was affecting most of his group.

Silvia let out a shout that seemed to snap everyone else out of their daze. The Succubus’ smile instantly disappeared as she hissed at the Amazon Warrior. The Succubus charged straight for Silvia but Toby had regained enough of his faculties to intercept the demon.
Alex was already moving to the side of Toby, his guns firing into her. He wasn’t expecting the recoil from his handguns and hit her twice before the rest of the shots went high.
His new Enforcer Class must have strengthened his Soul bullets far more than he could handle. The twin guns felt more like sawed off shotguns. The two bullets that had hit the arm and ribs of the demon had at least done significant damage as the large wounds were bleeding heavily.
Toby cried out in pain and fell to the floor when the Succubus got past his shield and slammed her palm into his chest plate. Alex aimed carefully this time and his next shot tore off the offending limb. Silvia whipped her spear over Toby’s head and cut the demons head off.
Danny poured her healing magic into Toby but he was still curled up in a ball, gritting his teeth through the pain.
“I don’t know what to do.” Danny said, panic at the edge of her voice. “I’m trying to heal him but nothing’s happening.”
Alex had no answers at first. He knelt down and got a good look at Toby’s chest plate but it didn’t have a mark on it. Alex tried to remember everything he could about Succubus lore. They were essentially sex demons, feeding on the life force of their victims after hypnotizing them. Danny’s healing hadn’t done anything though. Alex wracked his brain until he grasped at a rather odd thought.
“Cast your Nature’s Boon! Try and modify it so it only regenerates Soul Points!”
Danny hurriedly fell into her chanting and a blue glow pulsed out from her staff. Toby gasped and started to sit up as the other’s kept watch.
“That sucked.” Toby grunted as he stood to his feet. “What did that thing do to me?”
“It was draining your Soul Points.” Alex said. “Can you tell us if they are replenishing?”
Toby nodded his head. “I can feel it going back up. She took more than a quarter of my Soul Points in the few seconds she was touching me. How are we supposed to fight that?”
“I don’t think we should.” Rishi said. “We should head out. We are not equipped to deal with this place.”
The orb from the Succubus was at least worth the effort.
Experience: 1,000 (6,000xp per Demon Lawyer /6)
Soul: 2,000 (6,000 Souls per Demon Lawyer /6(x2))
With that number of Souls per kill, Alex could really do some damage in this place, but it was far too dangerous for them to risk their lives. No one argued with Rishi’s assessment, but when they reached the door, it wouldn’t budge.”
“It seems we have a problem.” Rishi said worriedly.
“The door is locked?!” Ty asked. “The doors never lock!”
“They do now.” Silvia said with a sneer. “So, what now?”
“Well.” Alex said. “I got an idea but you are not going to like it.”
Danny’s eyes narrowed. “What?”
Breathing in deep, Alex explained. “I have a theory. First, that demon needed to at least touch Toby to drain his Soul Points, so we need to keep them at a distance. Second, I think it hurt Toby so much because his Soul isn’t condensed. Lastly, if that is the case, I will be the best for tanking this place.”

Danny thought it over and then nodded.
“Okay. Just give me a minute to perfect this spell.”
“Wait.” Alex said, a little taken back. “You’re not going to argue with me?”
“Nope!” Danny said. “You said it before. Sometimes we will have to risk our lives for the betterment of the group. I may not like it, but at least I have a way to help you.”
Alex grinned. “Best girlfriend ever!”
Ty held up a fist bump. “Bro! Score?”
Silvia slapped Ty in the back of the head since Danny was too busy working on her spell.
Not even a minute later and they were moving into the door the Succubus had entered the lobby from. Beyond the doorway was a carpeted hallway and two Demons were already waiting for them.
“Oh, snap!” Silvia said. “They have male Succubus too!”
“It’s an Incubus.” Alex said, aiming his guns down the hallway.
As long as he shot slowly, he was able to mostly handle the recoil of his guns. He hit the Incubus and Succubus in their chests as the demons barreled towards them. He didn’t trust in his aim enough to try headshots until he could get his Strength up.
Danny cast her root spell and Ty sent his arrows into the demons as well while Rishi’s Stone golem stood in front of Alex, ready to rush any demon that got too close.
Both demons took the damage and Danny shouted expletives as the demons easily jumped over her root spell. The Incubus was the first to fall and Rishi’s golem rushed forward to intercept the Succubus.
The female demon slammed her palm into the stone golem but it didn’t have a Soul for her to drain. The golem wrapped its arms around the Succubus’ legs while Ty and Alex finished her off.
“Rishi, keep that golem in top shape.” Alex said. “It looks like it makes a perfect off-Tank.”
Rishi nodded and hurried over to his golem, fawning over it like mother does her child.
“Root spells are a bust.” Danny complained.
“Don’t whine.” Silvia said sourly. “Toby and I being stuck on rear guard sucks even more.”
“While I do agree with Silvia.” Toby stated. “I also don’t want to be touched by a demon ever again.”
“Yeah, that looked like it hurt aplenty.” Danny said sympathetically.
“Oh, my Panzer can handle himself.” Silvia said sweetly.
Danny raised an eyebrow and Toby flushed. Silvia gave him a peck on the cheek and winked at Danny.
There was a door on the right which turned out to be an empty office. The group assumed it was from the Succubus they had met in the lobby.
They moved to the end of the Hall which turned out to be a T intersection. Both hallways had several doors along the walls before each ended in a turn. By the law of everything Holy, they went left, because you always go left.
Some of the offices were empty and others were not. Thanks to Rishi’s golem, they were able to handle the demons pretty easily, though the cramped hallways was getting on their nerves. Alex needed to use his Onomatopoeia Modifier in the offices to pile on the damage. Every shot with the added Modifier cost 420 Soul Points. It was only thanks to Danny’s modified spell and the Alex’s x2 Soul Adept bonus to looted Souls that he was able to keep using his weapons as he was.
The end of the hallway turned into a dead end and each of them cursed their luck as they turned around to head down the other hallway.
They started clearing the offices again. As Alex opened the first door, he was expecting another office. Unfortunately, it had turned out to be a large conference room and the demons inside were waiting for them.
A large red skinned hand shot out of the door, grabbing hold of Alex’s arm. The vice like grip wrapped around his left bicep and Alex found himself flying through the doorway to crash into the large center table. The table broke apart and Alex looked up to see himself surrounded on all sides.
Four Succubae looked down on him with obvious glee written across their more than perfect faces. Alex might have found himself hypnotized if it wasn’t for the two-inch splinter of wood that was sticking out of his leg. The pain that it provided saved him from their hypnotic attacks.
The first Succubus to reach down was greeted with a bark of gunfire as Alex unloaded two shots into her chest.
“POP! POP!”
The invisible pressure wave knocked the demons back. Alex had to grit through the concussive force slamming into him. Fortunately, the demons surrounding him weren’t expecting it. With a decent amount of space to work with, Alex jumped off the ground and over the Succubus he had shot. With a well-timed flip, he shot twice more into the downed Succubus, scoring another chest shot and a luck headshot that ended the demon’s life. Landing on the opposite side of the room, the demons were already racing for him.
He started firing center mass into the three remaining demons and while his shots connected, they were ignoring the damage and continued closing in on Alex.
He knew he wouldn’t escape this fight unscathed. He continued firing as he jumped up and then kicked off the wall. His boots allowing him an increase in velocity, along with his high Agility, had him shooting to the left like a bullet. As fast as he was moving, he still felt the demons’ hands grab hold of his leg.
He immediately felt their pull on his Soul but to his surprise and theirs, the drain was only a trickle of points. Alex took advantaged of their shock and took aim at the nearest demon’s head and fired.
The head exploded into a bloody mess and Alex was caught in the storm of blood, brains and bone. He hit the ground in a roll and wiped the blood out of his eyes. A shoulder barreled into his gut sending him into the next wall. He was able to roll with it and ease some of the momentum but he still hit the wall with jarring force.
He kept moving even though his head felt a little fuzzy. His continued movement caused the claw that was swiping down on him to only graze his back. The armor along his back saved his spine from being severed and he turned around to unload his guns on the two demons who were hot on his heels.
His gun, disgustingly named Baby Maker, procced at that moment and the extra damage finished off the closest demon while the second demon was shot in the leg, causing her to faceplant at Alex’s feet. He didn’t waste the opportunity, shooting the downed Succubus in the back of the head.
Alex wanted to lay down and take a nap but the continued sounds of fighting showed him that two Incubi were holding the rest of his team at the door. An orb was already floating behind the Incubi and Alex grinned as he realized his friends had managed to kill one of the demons.
He fired into the demons and the surprise attack made them falter in their own attacks. The rest of the group took advantage of their momentary advantage and overwhelmed them in short order. Alex put his back to the wall and slid down as he swallowed a Minor Health Pill.
Toby and Silvia thankfully kept watch as Danny rushed over towards Alex.
“Holy Shit!” Danny exclaimed. “You look like you got fucked up by a wooden porcupine!”
Alex snorted as he pulled out several pieces of table from his leg. He was about to pull out the largest of them when he had a horrible idea.
“So, who wants to bet that the Bosses of this place are going to have stronger hypnosis spells?”
Danny looked at the two-inch shard of wood protruding from his leg and her eyes went wide. Ty noticed as well and started shaking his head.
“Fuck that!” Ty exclaimed. “I’m not getting shived, bro!”
Rishi winced, but gave Alex a nod. “It’s a fair idea. The pain will interrupt their natural ability to ensnare us.”
“Et tu, Rishi?” Ty asked.
That drew a few surprised looks.
“Fuck all yall!” Ty shouted. “I’m cultured and shit!”
That sent most of them laughing out loud and Ty cracked a smile.
Toby reminded everyone of the experience gains as they looted and several of the group went ahead and bought any upgrades they still needed. Alex couldn’t buy his next armor and weapon upgrades since they cost 10,000xp and the level cap for level eight was the same. He ended up leveling up and putting in his new attribute points into Strength. He didn’t like it but he needed to gain some control over his weapons’ new recoil.

Alex nearly choked when he saw how many Soul Points he had now. Then he realized that his cost for Soul bullets was significantly higher than before. Now that he thought about it, he would have been screwed if he went to any other door or Event that didn’t give him enough Soul Points per kill. While this place was packed with experience, it wouldn’t be beneficial to farm these types of places either. Alex needed to ask Jeffrey about the Soul Disciple Modifier and how it would affect his friends.
After everyone was sporting a piece of wood lodged into their legs, they left the conference room, most wincing at the pain. The next few offices down the hall were empty and soon, they were all standing at a large door with large golden nameplate.
‘Williams and Krook’
There were definitely going to be two Bosses in the room. After a little deliberation, they decided that if one was an Incubus and the other a Succubus, they would all rush the Succubus first. The golem would try and wrap up the Incubus and hopefully they could burn down the Succubus before the Incubus got free.
Alex opened the door and jumped in, taking a quick look at the room. It was almost as big as the lobby of the Bellevue. Two desks were placed on opposite sides of the room. As they expected, the Incubus, who wore a grey, pin striped suit, sat behind the left desk while a Succubus, in a rather tight black business skirt, was standing behind her desk on the right.
“Incubus on the left! Succubus on the right!” Alex shouted.
As the words left his mouth, he immediately felt the pull of the Succubus’ hypnotic power. Alex felt…moved, but the pain in his leg let him stay under control. Grinning at the surprised look on the female Boss’ face when he resisted her spell, he fired two shots into her chest.
“BOOM! BOOM!”
The explosion was quite bigger than they use to be and the demon was thrown back against the wall. The Incubus roared in anger but Alex ignored him and rushed to the right.
The golem did as planned and moved to intercept the Incubus while the others followed Alex. The stone arms of the golem wrapped around the Incubus’ legs and the demon thrust its hand at the golem, trying to suck the Soul out of it. Of course, nothing happened and the demon Boss started wailing on the stone golem.
Alex and the others reached the Succubus and poured on the damage. They were actually making pretty good headway until Rishi gave them a warning.
“The Incubus is still heading this way!” Rishi shouted. “He’s dragging my golem which means he is significantly strong!”
Alex spun around and sighted the incoming Boss.
“Drip! Buzz!”
The idea had just popped into Alex’s head. Drip meant water and Buzz meant electricity. If the two combined, it might give him a boost to the effect.
The Drip modified bullet actually wrapped the Incubus in a thin layer of water. The Buzz modified bullet hit that layer and lightning bounced around the surface of the Incubus, sending it to its knees. Alex turned around again and came face to face with the Succubus.
There was no doubt that the Succubus Boss was beautiful. You would have to be dead not to understand. So, when she locked her lips onto Alex’s, there was a brief moment of hesitation. That hesitation almost cost Alex his life.
Even as his mind started filling with lustful desires, he felt the pull on his Soul. It was far more than just a trickle this time but it was still weak enough so that Alex wasn’t crippled by pain. He struggled to pull his guns up but the demon clamped her hands around his wrists, trapping the weapons to his side.
Alex had enough sense to understand the angry shout from behind the Succubus and he yanked his head back in a desperate attempt to escape the demon’s lips. As soon as his lips were free, he shouted.
“Buzz! Buzz!”
He fired at the ground, shouting his modifier. The bullets electrified the small space between himself and the Succubus, sending both of them to the ground as electric bursts jolted through them.
The electric affect locked his limbs into place and he felt his heart beat erratically as he gritted through the pain. His body was shaking violently and even though it only lasted a few seconds, he was more than thankful when it stopped.
Alex was suddenly pulled to his feet as Toby easily lifted him. Shaking off the last of the effects of his modifier, he saw that the group had finished off the Succubus. Turning around to where he last saw the Incubus, there was a golden orb floating in the air.
“We did it?” He asked
“Yep!” Toby said, clapping his shoulder. “Smart move with the water and electricity and then again with breaking out of the Succubus’ lip lock.”
Alex looked to Danny who abruptly kissed him. Alex was lost in the moment when the sudden pain of the two-inch splinter was yanked out of his leg.
“Fuck!” He gasped.
Danny, who had pulled out the piece of wood, smiled up at him.
“Just in case you enjoyed that demon’s kiss a little too much.”
Alex felt the pain subsiding as his wounds healed.
“Didn’t have a choice there, crazy lady.” He grumbled.
He ignored his friends laughing at him as he collected his loot.
Experience: 5,000 (30,000xp per Demon Boss /6)
Soul: 10,000 (30,000 Souls per Demon Boss Partners /6(x2))
Boss Loot: Legendary Sexy Spectacles
Alex had enough to upgrade his armor for a second time, while Toby had enough to buy his Evolution based Modifier, Stalwart. The others watched as a flash of light engulfed the two and when the light faded, both sported new a brand-new helm.
Toby’s helm was polished steel covering everything but his face. Instead of a smooth surface, the helm had more of an angular shape, giving the German Tank a menacing appearance. His Shield and chest plate also turned into shining steel instead of the dull grey iron armor he had before.
Alex’s helm was a little sleeker than Toby’s and didn’t cover the back of his neck like Toby’s did but it was still impressive. The dark red and matte black steel looked intimidating and matched his guns perfectly. His cuirass also improved when dark red and matte black steel pauldrons covered his shoulders.
“Why do I feel like I should be at an anime convention?” Alex asked.
“If my armor helm looks anything like yours, then I am sure we are both going.” Toby stated.
“No bro!” Ty said. “They both look badass!”
“It doesn’t look practical.” Rishi commented with a thumbs up. “But I agree with Ty.”
“Agreed.” Silvia and Danny stated.
“What do you think about this loot, Rishi?” Alex asked.
“The demons’ strong points were mind control and draining Soul Points.” Rishi said. “Either they add to your weapon for a possible way to steal Soul Points or add it to your new helms in order to protect against mind control in the future.”
Alex hissed. “That’s a tough choice, man. What do you think, Toby?”
Toby drummed his fingers on the desk. “I would say Helm, but at the same time, are we settled on if we should get the Soul Disciple Modifier?”
That would be a huge factor. If they wanted to be able to stand against any Soul attacks in the future, they would need the Modifier. A weapon that possibly stole Soul Points could only benefit them. At the same time, protection against mind control would be huge, but they could also inflict damage on themselves to break the spell.
“Let’s talk to Jeffrey before we decide.” Alex finally said. “We will see if the Soul Disciple Modifier would work the same for you all as it works for me.”
