《Ancientblood》Chapter 2 - Thief

“Well, what should I do now?” Liam asked himself while gazing upon a sunny, cloudless sky. “I need to choose a class, but I suppose that depends on what I want to do here...”

Once again, he examined the two classes available to him. The first one, warrior, was probably there due to his history as a soldier. The second, thief, was likely there due to his actions during the masked man's speech. Both classes made sense but had different strengths. Choosing between the two felt the same as the time he had to choose which branch to enter back when he had originally decided to join the military. All were good, but all had a different purpose.

Before settling on one, Liam decided to check out some of the options he would have in this new world. It's not like it was his first time being cast into a foreign environment with naught but the clothes on his back.

He walked back to the street where all of the stalls had been. When he stepped back into the street full of bustling people, he noticed that there was a commotion down the road. Immediately, he turned away from the commotion to avoid trouble. However, the shouting caught his attention.

“How could you do this to people?! They are people!”

“Quiet, child! What is this nonsense you speak of?!”

Oh, I see... this may be worth observing.

Working his way through the crowd, Liam peeked over everyone's heads. In the middle of the crowd was a young man engaged in a heated dispute with a middle-aged man that appeared to be well-off. However, there was another man prostrating himself before the middle-aged man. This third man was wearing naught but rags.

“Slavery is wrong!” The young lad spouted at the top of his lungs. His fists were clenched tightly at his sides and his whole body shook with fury.

“What is wrong with you, child?” The middle-aged man asked.

I see... someone with a sense of justice. Liam thought. In order to get more details, he tapped the shoulder of the man next to him and asked, “What exactly is happening here?”

“Oh, that young man is probably from another country that doesn't allow slavery. It happens every once in a while.” The man answered.

“I see. Thanks for telling me.” Liam said. He knew the young man was likely someone from the modern world that did not know when to keep his mouth shut. Although Liam was against the idea of slavery, he knew that simply setting that slave free would end badly. Whether the people from another world liked it or not, this world was different and would not easily change.

Leaving behind the commotion, he strolled down the street with one hand on his new dagger. If the financial situation in this land was anything like he had seen in destitute countries in the field, then thievery was certainly something to keep an eye out for. Oh... I guess I'm one of those thieves now... maybe I should just pick that class so that I can get food when I need it. Seems like it would help me survive better.

Basically deciding on thief class at this point, his next issue was figuring out how to apply it. After that, he would need to find the adventurer guild and recruiting area for soldiers in order to figure out if either choice would be good. If neither choice offered enough to live off of, then he would simply go on an adventure into the wilderness on his own.

At first, he tried to find the adventurer guild on his own but realized he would just get himself lost. Even though the city did not appear to be particularly large, the streets were curved in many places and some simply cut off completely. There did not seem to be any organization to it at all.

Since he could not find anything on his own, Liam retraced his steps to the market street. Upon reaching the busy street, he looked for a stall without customers. When he spotted one, he walked up to it. At first, the elderly man under the tent looked excited to have a customer. Liam would have to disappoint.

“Can I help you, young man?” The elderly stall-owner politely asked while rubbing his hands together in expectation.

“Oh. It's been a long time since someone called me young.” Liam replied while wearing a nostalgic grin.

“Oh, but you still have a good many years ahead of you, lad.” The gentleman said.

“Haha, I sure hope so.” Liam said. “So, I'm sorry to say, but I'm not able to buy anything at the moment.”

“Oh, I see.” The stall-owner said. Disappointment flashed across the man's eyes, but quickly vanished. “Did you need help with something else, then?”

“Yes, please. Would you be able to point me in the direction of the Adventurer Guild?” Liam asked.

“Oh? Are you looking for fame and fortune? Hehehe. It is just as hard to find it there as anywhere else.” The stall-owner said while rubbing his nose.

“Well, I don't know if I will join it, but it is an option.” Liam said.

“Mhmm... Well, if you look behind you,” The elderly man said while pointing over the buildings behind Liam, “do you see that large steeple with the flag at the top?”

“Yes. The one with two swords on it?” Liam asked, looking where the man was pointing.

“That's the one. That there is the Adventurer Guild, though it's more of a popular tavern these days.” The man explained.

Liam faced the old man again and said, “Thank you for the directions, sir.”

“No problem, lad. Just make sure you buy something from my stall next time you come through. Hehehe.” The stall-owner said with a toothy grin.

“I will remember to do so next time.” Liam said, nodding. He looked at the goods on the counter and wondered what they actually were. At first, he thought they were stones, but they also looked similar to gems. Although he wanted to find out what they were, appearing too ignorant was probably not the best idea at this point. For now, he would focus on making his way toward the adventurer guild.

“May Sanguis watch over you, lad.” The old man said.

Although he had no idea what this 'Sanguis' was, Liam replied, “And you as well, sir.”

With that, he made his way toward the Adventurer Guild. From what he could tell, it was only a few blocks away. During his stroll through the town, he opened his status screen again to see if he could choose a class. He tried not to stare at the screen like some of the idiots he passed here and there. However, he did wonder how he was supposed to change his class. While thinking such, another screen popped up, startling him.
