《I Come From The Water》23: Not Quite To Plan

(Lave POV)

We wove our way in and out of the back alleys. Any time we came to a brake in the buildings we would stop and see if Gran's boat was nearby. This was getting really tedious. The only reason I didn't just make a brake for the water and be done with it, is because of my debt. Even if I hate the Human race, haven't known these people for more than two weeks, and wish to jump in the wonderful liquid abyss in front of me I still had to see things through.

While I didn't owe Gran anything I do owe Amice who took care of me for a week. Even if she is a delusional pervert. The problem with living a long time is that you learn how rare it is for someone to help you. So when someone does you have to respectfully pay them back. We peeked around the corner looking at the docked boats.

As we have come further west it was possible to see a dry dock in the distance. “This is where she was before I left Vasa.” Gran whispered while searching. “However I don't see her now.”

“Is it possible that your boat is over in the dry docks?” I asked while pointing to the well light area surrounded by soldiers and knights. Despite it being nighttime that part of the dock was in full swing. Workers cleaned the barnacles off the outside of ships, checked cargo, and repaired broken or damaged boards.

Gran paled. “I want to say no but if they know it is my ship then it is more than likely there.” Amice was watching the area in fascination.

I sighed. I really wasn't in the mood to go on a murder spree right now. “Oi, noble girl. You think you can get us through that throng on people without being noticed?”

Amice looked at me with shinning eyes and a light smile. “Nope.”

My eye twitched in annoyance. “No?”

“No, I can't get you guys through.” Her simple answer had me resting my head against the wall in disappointment.

“Why can't you get us through? You got me through the gate without any problems.” Gran asked in desperation. “Your family seems really respected. It should be simple.”

She laughed. “Yeah they are. That's kind of the problem. Well one anyway. If I was to tell any of the knights who I am I will immediately be detained.” Amice said lightly. “On the other hand if I was to tell the soldieries who I am then news would spread that I am in this town and I will probable be arrested.”

Gran looked stunned. “But the gate...”

“Well they are only gate keepers. So its ok to tell them. In fact you could say that it is a rather large loophole in the system. Even if you are wanted in one town you aren't going to be wanted in another. Not unless they have a poster up like they do for you two. The soldieries also don't speak with the knights all that often so its pretty safe to speak to gate keepers. However the soldieries patrolling around town are a bit different.” Amice went back to watching the dry dock. “Plus I have become a little famous so even if there is no poster my name still gets around to the higher ups.”

Gran just stared at her in silent disbelief. “Then that means we're braking in.” I stated while pulling out a bottle of yellow powder.

“Yeah a full frontal attack.” She agreed. “By the way what is that?”

I finished rubbing the powder over my eyelids causing them to glow a slight gold color. “Eyebright.” I said simply blinking my eyes a few times to get used to my now clearer night vision. I sighed seeing Amice looking pleadingly at me. “Here.”

She quickly copied me and covered her eyelids in the yellow powder. “Wow, its almost like its daytime. What is this?” Her pupils were extremely dilated with a slight golden tint in the whites of her eyes where the powder had fallen in.

“Muscle relaxent. It forces your eyes to relax. The torches where causing your eyes to adjust to their light leaving all the shadows around them pitch black. However now that your eyes have relaxed they are adjusted to the night and not the torches.” The draw back of this is that if you look at any lights you'll be temporally blinded. Though it is great for infiltration and assassination missions.

“Where did you get it?” Asked Gran while I put the bottle away.

“Trade secret. Now I want you to look for your little boat once we're inside. Amice and I will be taking care of the guards while you figure out how to launch.” I pulled out two daggers that were in my boots while loosening the hilt on my others.

“Wait we don't even know if my ship is in there.” He argued in a panic.

“We've been from one end of the dock to the other and this is the only place left to be searched. That means your boat is in there. Even if its not the we can still escape through the water.” I checked my pouches to make sure they were secure.

“Plus Gran what's life without a little danger? My love and I will protect you. Just find your pretty ship and get it ready so we can leave.” Amice added looking eager to go. “I want to see this new land.”

Pointedly ignoring Amice's 'my love' comment I stalked through the shadows until nothing but bright open space was left. Watching a guard pass us by I launched into a silent sprint across the rock path. I rushed behind him slitting his throat. My hand over his mouth stifling his scream. Dragging his body I laid him in the shadow of a barrel.

Glancing behind me I saw Amice lopping the head off of a knight. Her sword making a loud clang as it collided with his armor. Thankfully it was covered up by the sound of hammers. She drug his body off in a similar manor I had. The head rolled across the rock until it hit Gran's feet.

With a look of horror and disgust he let out a wretched scream alerting the dock patrol and workers of our presents. Immediately destroying any advantage we had with a surprise attack. Amice was laughing hysterically to the side having dropped the body on the ground to clutch her stomach.

“I can't believe you just did that.” She gasped out as the patrol began surrounding us. “You should have seen your face!”

My shoulders dropped. The tension filled air losing out to Amice's fit. A Knight stepped forward his sword drawn. “Why are you...” He froze when he saw the knights head on the ground at Gran's feet. “Arrests them!”
