《I Come From The Water》14: Just One Push

(Amice POV)

I placed the burlap bag up on the counter as the man behind the desk glared at me. Really, one of the reasons I don't like taking quests from the Guild is because of the unfriendly staff.

“Here is the quest sheet.” I said politely while sliding it across the counter. The man just glanced down at the crumpled paper in annoyance.

“Why is there blood on it?” He asked blandly.

“Haha, well we had a bit of a fight with the animals in the mountain. Nothing to serious.” I replied nervously trying to play off the murder of twenty-one Moss Monkeys. As Moss Monkeys were highly liked for their docile behavior you will be fined for killing them. That was part of the reason we left them there. It was quite difficult to get Lave to leave them alone.

The man raised his eyebrow in doubt. “Is that so.” Grabbing the bag he pulled out the Dragon Root and began counting. This was a quick cash quest. We should leave Haze tomorrow. I don't know how long it will take to find those dead Moss Monkeys but we can't stay to find out. No way will we have enough money to pay off a fine, and I don't want to have to brake out of jail again.

“Here is the money for completing the quest.” The man placed a small bag on the counter.

“Thank you.” I began counting the money in the bag. I had gathered twelve Dragon Root meaning we should get one hundred and twenty copper coins of fifteen silver. I counted twelve silver coins. frowning I double checked the amount. “Um sir I think you made a mistake. You gave me twelve silver coins instead of fifteen.”

“That wasn't a mistake. You get eight coppers per plant.” He said with a strait face. That bastard! I know he is pocketing the other three silver!

“Is that so? But I believe the paper said ten copper per plant. In fact its right here.” I pointed to the sentence on the page, struggling to keep a peaceful smile on my face.

“That's just a smudge caused by the blood. I can see how you would think it says ten but it really says eight. Now take the money and get out.”

“... Aren't guild employees suposed to represent the association? What would happen if it was discovered that one of their own is skimming money?” I pressed.

He just smirked and lowered his voice. “I wonder what would happen. Would they believe a weak little girl such as yourself, or a trusted employee? Should we find out? I would just take the coins I was given and walk out, if I were you. That is if I was smart.”

Hoho, this man is playing with fire. I took a deep breath trying to keeping my emotions under control. “I see, and does this 'smart' employee have eyes? I hardly think that a 'weak little girl' would be able to wonder around Terror Mountain. Let alone come back alive.”

“Well sweet heart it doesn't matter what you think.” His smile was twisted as he said this. “Why don't you go play out on the streets with the rest of your kind. In fact you can leave the rest of the money here. As compensation for bothering an employee with false accusations.”

I ground my teeth while reaching for the handle of my sword. Power abusing bastards like this need to have the shit beat out of them. “Oh may, accusing me of making false accusations. Why don't I ...” A hand wrapped around my mouth from behind forcibly cutting me off.

“I'm sorry Sir. My sister gets all defensive when people call her a little girl. Please don't mind her.” I struggled against Grans hold, but my arm was trapped over my head and the other between the counter.

“Is that so? Well you should watch her. You never know when bad people may come and take advantage of her.” Replied the man.

“Your very right. Well than we will take our leave now. Have a nice day.” Gran shoved the coin bag into my hand and begin pulling me through the door while still keeping a hand over my mouth. He released me once outside.

“What was that for?! You know we just lost three silver coins right!” I yelled in anger. “Three silver! Plus it's not like anyone would miss him.”

“Are you planing to fight all of Haze? If you kill someone then you will be hunted as a murder. Even more so when in front of all those people. It's a crime.” Gran reasoned.

“Tsk, killing someone like that isn't a crime. Its an act of kindness. Plus you only have to avoid the town if you do something like that. Its not like they will follow you out of the provence.” I took a deep breath calming my emotions while glancing around. “By the way where is Lave?” Gran sighed and pointed.

Lave stood leaning against the wall of the Guild eating meat skewers. “When I turned my back on her for just a minute she had somehow gotten those chicken skewers. I don't even know how she ordered them when she can't even speak. Let alone how she payed for it.”

Watching Lave happily eat the skewers calmed me down. She's so cute. Sneaking up to her I snatched the one she was eating. “Tsk!” Lave glared at me but made no move to stop me. Instead she grabbed a new one and walked off.

“An indirect kiss.” I whispered in bliss while trailing behind Lave. Putting that aside this chicken skewer is really good. I wonder where she bought this? Gran walked a little ways behind us with a complicated look on his face.
