《I Come From The Water》4: An Annoying Encounter

I stood still as the spear from one of the guards plunged towards me. I had no plans what so ever to stop what was happening. No there was no reason to make any plans. I watched as a shadow jump down from the top of the ramparts. It quickly descended and with a spectacular display of aim, landed directly on top of the guards knocking them both unconscious.

As the dust cloud dispersed I saw three unmoving figures piled on top of each other. Rest in peace. May the Coventina guide your way to the afterlife. Bowing slightly in respect, I turned around looking at the road that split off into three different directions. I have officially given up on getting into the town. While I could just walk in now that the guards are out of the way, I still wouldn’t be able to get a room. Sigh, the annoyances of not knowing a language, and from the way that those guards reacted to my clothes I might need new ones.

Grabbing a stone from the ground I put the road leading to the forest behind me. I threw the stone up into the air and waited for it to land. May the rock be the leader in my destined route. I smirked. I always loved wandering with no idea where I was. My ‘pathfinder’ landed on the road to the left which lead to a wide open plain. Ohhh, no trees!

Just as I joyfully took a step down the road I heard a scraping noise come from behind me. Turning around I saw the figure of a short girl slowly rise up into the sitting position. “ሆ: እኔ እኔ ተነስቶ ማመን አንችልም.” She looked around her and spotted me. Her grey eyes locked onto me as a large smile spread across her face. I shivered and took a step back not liking where this was headed.

Noticing my movement the girl popped up like a spring. Her smile even larger than before. “በዚያ ሄይ. ወደ ከተማ መግባት እየሞከርክ ነው? እኔ ጠባቂው ወደ ውጭ ባንኳኳ አዝናለሁ. ስሜ ነው.” She walked closer as she kept talking in a constant stream of sound. I frowned. “እናንተ እሺ ነህ?” She asked with concern showing on her face, but her smile was still there like it was her permanent expression.

I studied her as she came closer. A sword that was as big as she is was strapped to her back, and swayed when she walked. She was wearing a pair of plain brown boots that matched her pants that was accented with a couple of belts. Her shirt is a tan cotton that hung loosely off her frame. Her grey eyes sparkled in stark contrast to her short brown hair.

Oh, hell no. I turned around ignoring her and started down my path. Hoping that the girl would just leave me alone. “ሰላም?” The girl jogged up beside me and held out her hand. “ስለተዋወቅን ደስ ብሎኛል. ስምህ ማን ነው?”

Without stopping I glared at the girl. “Leave.”

The girl tilted her head and muttered “Lave?” Then she popped back into motion. “የእርስዎ ስም Lave ነው? ይህ እንዲህ ያለ ቆንጆ ስም ነው. የት እንደምትሄድ? እኛም ተመሳሳይ መንገድ የሚሄዱ ከሆነ አብረን መሄድ እንችላለን.” Her mouth running non-stop. Why is she coming with me? Please just go a different way. I don’t even understand what you’re saying!

Suddenly a whistle sounded from the gate. “ማስቆም!!!” Guards where gathering there and pointing my way.

The girl jumped into action at the sound of the whistle. Running down the road she turned to me and shouted. “በስመአብ! እነሱም ተይዟል! ሩጥ!” What? The guards started running after her. The scene was so comical that I couldn’t help laughing. “Hahahahaha.”

The guards turned to me and pointed. “እንዲሁም እሷን ያግኙ!” And began running towards me as well. Are you serious? The girl came back and grabbed my arm tugging me down the road.

“ምን እያደረክ ነው? ቶሎ, መሮጥ!” She said as she all but dragged me. My eyes grew cold. Bringing my hand down to break her wrist just like I did to that maggot from earlier. The girl released me and ran. What? I was dodged? The shout from the guards that are now much closer than before made me sigh.

To kill or not to kill? I debated for a while but in the end I am tired. I was thrown into a strange place, walked through a forest for a day and half a night, killed some pompous men, and was threatened by the guards. Glancing at the guards that were streaming out of the town like an army of ants I sighed more. I’ll just run.

Catching up with the girl she glanced at me smugly. “የሚመጣ?” she asked. I may not be able to understand what she is saying but it doesn’t take a genius to know she was being sarcastic. Pissed, I ran faster trying to leave her in the dust. “ተብቁኝ! Lave!” She cried out in surprise. Ha, take that strange Human.
