《Throne of Blood》Chapter 33 - Glimpses of….?

The eye of despair looked down at us and the icy chill, of this decayed grave of swords, gripped my heart. Sirius held my hand tightly as we started to run away from the grave of swords and wilted white lilies. The air around us had gotten chillier and warmth had started leaving my body at a rapid rate. Sirius’s face had also gone pale but he said nothing to me as we kept on running. The space around us blurred, even more violently than before, and the surrounding shifted into a calm and serene environment. We, Sirius and I, found ourselves in the middle of grassland. Standing all alone, in the wide prairie, we tried to look for anything that would provide us any help. I knew it was all an illusion, but why would the apparitions show me the dirtiest of my memories. And the iniquitous eye that gazed down at us felt like something….. bizarre, something greater than the apparitions I saw. The eye felt veiled in obscurity and incomprehensible, and yet I had felt a certain attraction towards it. I had a feeling that we had managed to escape the small cave of the apparition’s inclinations and ended up in the grasp of something beyond our understanding.

My train of thought was broken by the sudden change in the sky. A Sun, bright red in colour, had risen rapidly as it illuminated the entire sky.

“What is happening?” Sirius asked in a flustered tone and I could only shake my head in response.

The brightly lit Sun cracked, and its fire died down after a moment as it dropped down to the earth to spread destruction around. The scene blurred in front of our eyes again and this time, we were standing in a foggy forest. In front of us stood a castle, atop which sat a giant black dragon, a humanoid beast and a human woman with her back to us. The castle glowed with splendor and its grandeur seemed to thin the fog around us. A Sun rose in the sky again, but this time covered in fog as if it had put the veil around it to hide itself from the beholders. This Sun, too, cracked and its fire died down as it dropped to the earth as destruction swallowed us again.

The scene blurred past again and now we stood on top of a mountain. We glanced around, however our eyes caught nothing but an endless stream of clouds that floated beneath us. And from beneath the clouds rose a red dragon, large enough to cover the sky, with innumerable numbers of its kind following behind closely. And a Sun rose in the sky again. A sun more fiery than the two before, as it seemed to want to burn everything in sight. It broke, like the two suns before it, and its fragments fell to the earth, devastating the land and the dragons who dared to fly close to it. The destruction soon spread throughout the land and soon swept over us again.

The scene blurred past us again as we found ourselves on a narrow road that seemed unkempt. The drainage was a disaster as our noses were assaulted with a sharp, foul odour. On the other side of the road, a little girl was standing while staring at a little book in her hand. She walked without looking forward and yet, every step of her fell with grace. A Sun rose in the sky for the fourth time, but this one went higher than any of its predecessors. The sun kept rising up, with the intention to break the sky to reach further heights but it broke apart splendidly as soon as it touched the boundary of the world. The little girl across the narrow road looked up for the first time. She slowly raised her hand upwards and the sky started quaking as the world stood still for a second. The fragments of the broken sun came together as it lit up its fire, milder than before, and stayed illuminating the sky.

The scene blurred again and now we ended up in a cemetery. A number of gravestones were visible and in front of one of them was a man, downtrodden and lost as he sat on the ground while gently running his hands on the grave. A Sun rose again in the sky, heavily shadowed by the dark clouds that tried to cover it completely. The man, in front of the grave, stood up and flicked his hand violently. The sun broke apart, seemingly by the man’s actions, as its fragments fell to the earth. The strange solitary man stood with his hand stretched to the side as if embracing the destruction he had caused.

The scene blurred again and we found ourselves standing near a small pond. Nothing existed here, only grim darkness and the small pond that gave out the light. An aged man, with deep golden coloured hair, was kneeling beside the pond and the soft sound of sobbing could be heard from him. Sirius and I stood there, without moving a single muscle of ours. A sun rose in the sky, the sixth one. It rose up gradually, way slower than the others, as if it wanted to contain the beauty of earth within it. It reached the sky at a very modest height, even though it seemed to have enough strength remaining to reach farther heights, it stood calmly in its place. The kneeling man raised his hand and brought it down to the ground with aggression. The earth shook and we lost our balance, yet we didn’t miss what the visions wanted us to see. The sun rose higher, as if fighting with itself while trying to break the sky. The sun cracked and broke apart but the man near the pond raised his hand up in the sky, to cease every action that seemed to be taking place. Parts of the sun came back together and its fire lit up again as it stayed in the sky with the fourth sun.

The scene blurred again and this time I felt a sharp pain in my head as my consciousness was ripped apart from my body. I felt Sirius’ hand slipping away while I struggled to hold on as tightly as I could. A vehement force was attracting me towards itself and Sirius was being pulled away. My eyes closed on their own as Sirius’ hand left mine. I was pulled rapidly towards the malevolent noise that threatened to rip my head apart. And soon I found myself in a void.

White.

Everything around me was white. Nothing existed in this space around me. Looking in every direction to find something, anything, I cursed inwardly. That's when a shadow covered the sky. I looked up to see the iniquitous eye, looking at me, with its tongue stretched out. Glimmer appeared in my peripheral vision and it started taking the shape of a hut, small and unappealing, yet welcoming. The hut looked well maintained and fantastical as the glimmer shivered over it. The eye in the sky opened its mouth and let out surprisingly serene words.

“Persecuted by the old, said the chosen one; he shall free the people who shed their blood.

And yet they remain shackled, as the promise becomes cursed.

The dragon said to the hero when they met yet again, ‘let the cycle end, oh wretched one.’

Many walked the path after him towards the ubiquitous throne, and only blood remained, when greed in their eyes shone.”

Mana raged, like a wrathful god, as the words were being spoken. A deafening sound was heard as mana collided with the world of white, incidentally breaking it apart as if it had been a mirror. I was pulled away instantly and the world became a blur. A heavy throbbing assaulted my head and my body felt weak when I tried to open my eyes. They did open, although slowly and with struggle, and my room in the Frye’s palace became visible. The nightmare had finally ended.
