Chapter 50 - The Scrapper's Captive
Søren knelt down next to the former captive of the Scrappers and took a moment to look them over. The youngish looking man was looking pretty rough. His short, dark blonde hair was matted with dirt, blood, and debris. Blood had dried on his face, crusty on top and still a bit sticky along the hairline. He cradled his right arm against his stomach, holding it close and trying not to move it much as they tried to sit up. Søren reached out and helped the Scrapper's captive to sit up. The captive turned his slate grey eyes on Søren and tried to scramble away.
"Slow down there," Søren said and tightened his grip on the captive's shoulders.
"What happened?" the captive asked, looking around the shattered camp and the bodies that Sehro and Neeka were dragging to the edge of the firelight.
"We wanted to ask the same thing about you. How'd you end up in the hands of these Scrappers?" Søren asked. The captive took another long look around the camp and a long look at Søren and his two companions. Søren waved his hand in front of the captive's face.
"Sorry. I just had given myself up to being sold off by the Scrappers and to have this happen," the captive explained. "It's a bit of a shock."
Søren nodded and pulled his backpack off his back, shrugging out of the straps.
"You don't have to tell me about being in shock," Søren mumbled. "Anyway, let's get you fixed up. I have some bandages and medicine to keep any wounds you have from getting infected. My name's Søren. That's Neeka and Sehro. Neeka is the one with the spear. She's pretty good with it."
The captive nodded, looking between Søren and the Fuerven.

"Water Finder tribe. Haven't seen them in a very long time. Not since my grandfather's time," the captive said quietly, more to himself than anyone else. "I'm Fluke. Fluke Earthrunner."
"Fluke? That's a, uh... interesting name," Søren said cautiously. Fluke laughed.
"Yeah, my father's name is Luke and I was a fluke. So that's what he named me." The former captive just shrugged his shoulders and regretted doing so immediately. He winced and pulled his right arm tighter against his chest. Søren frowned and reached into his mind, past the interface and into the depth of Potential hidden inside him. Reached towards the [Path of the Shaper] and spoke several Atlantean words while pulling on that path. He rested a hand on Fluke's arm.
Congratulations! You have discovered the Skill, [Minor Rejuvenation]. Would you like to spend a skill point to learn it? Y/N
Søren tapped yes mentally and felt the Skill finish casting. A warm green light that reminded him of earth, spring, and renewal spread from his hand on Fluke's arm. Fluke's eyes widened in surprise.
"You're a healer?" he asked in shock.
"I dabble," Søren explained, leaving out the source of the skill being used. He watched as green numbers ticked off every second, as the [Minor Rejuvenation] skill counted down. "A hundred TEK and ten seconds for a few hundred health. Seems decent enough. Anyway, how'd you get caught by the Scrappers? Where are you from?"
Fluke was jarred out of his stupefied state, jerking his eyes away from the rapidly healing wounds on his arm and body.
"Oh uh, the Scrappers caught me out foraging for mushrooms. Good season for it in the backwoods near Karlsfjord," Fluke shared, his gaze steady on Søren. "Small town on the trade road between Haven and the next city-state, Bastion."

"We're headed to Haven. Would your town be on the way?" Søren asked. Neeka had rejoined the two while Sehro was hidden out in the shadows, keeping watch.
"No, not really on the way," Fluke said, "but if you're going overland instead of along the road, it might be faster to visit Karlsfjord first and then take the road. Somewhat safer too."
Søren looked to Neeka.
"That ok with you?" he asked.
Neeka, who had been keeping one eye on Fluke and the other on Søren flicked them both at Fluke and then both at Søren, just nodded.
"Don't make trouble for us Fluke," she finally said after a few long moments. Her spear glinted in the firelight as she turned it slightly in her claws. Fluke's eyes widened slightly and he just nodded back to Neeka.
"Let's head out to our camp," Søren suggested. "Don't want to stay here just in case there are other Scrappers in the area. Neeka, cover our tracks please. Sehro, lead the way. I'll keep watch and help our new traveling companion here."
The group of three from Caisleán had grown by one after a blindingly successful raid on the Scrappers camp. One can hope our lucks holds out, Søren thought to himself as he walked next to Fluke, and slightly behind, to keep an eye on the Scrapper's former captive.
"If you don't mind me pestering you," Fluke asked once they were underway. He then paused and waited for Søren to react. Søren just shrugged and Fluke assumed it was ok to go on. "By the Devourer, how did you get the weapon and armor?!" he asked excitedly. "It looks fucking amazing."
Søren took a deep breath and sighed.
This is gonna be a long trip.

This was my entry for National Novel Writing Month, because why only write one series at a time? The more the merrier! (meanwhile, my keyboard bursts into flames...) I'm also the writer of The Last Science, an ongoing low-fantasy/speculative sci-fi series. If you're familiar with that, you know what to expect here: lots of character-focused drama and dialogue, not a whole lot of traditional action. However, I'm writing a bit differently than usual here, and in a very different structure, so there should be some surprises for returning readers. I hope you enjoy it! [Discord] — for those of you who want to hang out and chat. Cover art (fullsize): Path of Revelation, by taenaron (Tobias Roetsch), modified by Etzoli. Normally I like to do my own cover art from scratch, but I was in a rush for the contest. Might be replaced down the line if I get time. 8 146Settlement of Safehaven - A Hearthtree Series
"Welcome to the ECS Asgard, your ride through the stars to your new home-" Or so goes the sales spiel of this one of four and first-produced colonization ship, a spiel meant to placate the portions of humanity who would be selected for such a journey through the stars. It was meant to be a simple thing; people would sleep in hibernation or stasis, to experience their lives within the virtual reality world which kept their minds occupied. The virtual world was meant to simulate a fantasy world of Viking or Roman lore. But not all with this virtual world was fine; nor were the humans who were selected for its maiden and only voyage. One colonist lost everything dear to him, but through his pain and torment, he gained the attention of the colony ship's AI.
8 405A Fool's Journey, or the Vagrancies of a Man in Exotic Lands
What does a sad bastard do when fate, literally, decides to throw him into a fantasy world? Solon just wanted to lead a normal life; work, share some pizza with friends, work, play some videogames or read something, work, maybe sleep?, work... Pretty much the usual, rinse and repeat. It was far from perfect, but life was nicely boring and comfy enough. Truth be told, he had hoped it would go on forever, or until he got married, or until the apocalypse finally decided to bring an end to everything. As far as he could tell, though, the former was about as likely as the latter; not very. And perhaps even somewhat related, if it ever came to it. Unfortunately, he saw himself involved in some sort of cosmic fart that screwed him over, brutally severing his life-plan. Or, maybe, would it be more suitable to say that Fate had other plans? Sure, he's yet to find out exactly what those plans might be, but, at the very least, they do seem to involve him being shoved into another world, fighting off a couple of horrendous creepers, and -almost- an accidental liaison with a baboon. Needless to say, the job doesn't come with dental care, and death seems more likely than retirement... Yep, when he got yoinked out of Earth, there were no princesses waiting for him, no sexy goddesses, and no severe Gandalf-wannabes! Heck, not even a bunch of demonic cultists! All he got for the trouble was a bunch of snarky windows and the honest desire to punch whatever bastard happens to be behind the smug System. Well, that, and a few forced trips to the so-called Tower of Ascension. Not exactly what he would have expected but, on the plus side, he does get to do some magic. Though, not quite the wand-waving kind. Whatever. One thing’s patently clear, though, he’s certainly not the chosen one, nor the summoned hero, nor the Savior. If anything, he himself might be in need of some saving... Just what kind of fool does the System take him for? Please do consider the tags. Also, 'Strong Lead' here means weak to strong, over a decent amount of time, not op from the very beginning. Things to expect: decent grammar, cheeky goats. Things not to expect: Harems, a decent sense of fashion.

Astonished and bewildered, Evelyn is left with the task of finding the visitor’s true intention.
