Chapter 34 - Extra hand
It didn’t matter where he went, people constantly gave him glances. His name was not known, but anyone could tell who he was with a single look. His style was different from theres, and the aura he emitted made them keep their distance.
Yan stretched his arms as he yawned. “This is how it is to be famous huh?” He asked himself before walking into a small shop. It was in the center of the town, but was smaller than the other buildings, if one was not careful you wouldn’t notice it.
As Yan entered the shop, a vast amount of patterns were spread across the wall. He approached the counter where a folder was placed. He opened it as his eyes were flooded with information on different inscriptions.
He quickly flipped through the pages. There were a total of eight sections, each section contained five or ten types of inscriptions. Every section was divided by rank as well as rarity. Naturally the prices increased for each of these types of inscriptions as well.
Yan closed the folder as he walked into the back of the shop.
If he came here a few hours before, maybe he could have gotten himself an inscription, but now that flew out of his mind. The inscription master in this town was dead. He was a high ranking inscription master as well, the other inscription apprentices in the town were low ranked.
An inscription master is only called ‘master’ if they are able to make rank 5 inscriptions. Until then, they are called inscription apprentice.
Earlier Leah followed the inscription master apprentice. He seemed to know something and Yan wanted to find out what it was. This mark on his hand did not disappear, and it also seemed that this mark meant something.
She followed him here, and the sign outside was the one Leah mentioned before they arrived on this island. ‘Heaven’s Wrath’ was the name. Anyone who had an inscription done here was said to gain a major boost in strength that defied the heavens.

As his search ended, he found no sign of the apprentice. This could be a sign that it was time for them to give up and leave. But something told Yan that the apprentice of the inscription master should not be normal.
To become a disciple of someone who has the title of ‘master’ is not simple, thus he must have great talents.
As Yan was leaving the shop, he noticed something on one of the tables. It was an unfinished note, or it could have been something else.
“When night comes an owl comes out, when day breaks flowers bloom. Yet amidst it all a snake will forever crawl, u” Yan recited the words on the note.
He could not make his mind about what it meant, and he was not going to spend the time to figure it out either.
It was time to leave, Yan decided.
He couldn’t waste time trying to find someone. He had plans to do and he was sure that there could be many more inscription masters who would join his crew. Even if he didn’t get one, all would be fine.
As he opened the door, he couldn’t help but notice the crowd of people at the door. Instantly he could make out that they were from the alliance. The green robes gave them away.
Yan raised his eyebrow slightly as he had a grin on his face. “Need something?” He asked them in a ice cold tone.
An elder stepped forward, his eyes were filled with disgust. He could not believe the nerve of this youngerster in front of him.
The air around this elder seemed to disrupt as surges of wind blew past Yans body knocking the hat off of his head.
“Yes, your head!” He said as he moved.
His fist smashed straight into Yan’s head going straight through. The others behind him couldn’t help but laugh.

When they heard of what this youth did, they thought he might be a treat but it seems not. They shouldn’t have believed that official, this youth was just too weak.
As the elder retracted his hand, he noticed that he did not kill the youth. No blood splattered, his fist felt like it hit a cloud. Forming a hole but doing no damage.
Yan’s face reappeared after his fist was retracted. The grin on his face was no gone, and a second later the elder in front of him body was sliced in half.
The six others behind that elder couldn’t believe their eyes. They were sure that Yan had died. They even checked his cultivation themselves, and the male was only a mortal. Such a thing should not have happened.
They refused to believe such a thing as weapons appeared in each of the hands. Before they could make a move, their bodies collapsed. Six small holes in each of their heads, as six bodies laid motionless on the ground.
Yan placed his hat back on his head with one hand as he blew the smoke off his finger with the other.
This town was bigger than the previous ones he went to, so naturally the population was higher as well. Yan noticed that there were a few people passing by that noticed this scene.
He was leaving this place anyways, so he could care less.
As Yan started walking away, he sensed something strange as he reached into his pocket and pulled out two vivre cards. There were two small burn marks on them both, it seems that they just started to burn.
Yan looked up to the sky as he couldn’t help but remember those two people. He wondered what sort of trouble they got into.
It seems that it was time to return.
He placed the vivre cards back into his pocket. As he turned his head and spotted the inscription masters apprentice standing behind him.
“You again.” Yan said as he turned to face him.
“It seems that you did not heed my warning, now look what happened.” The apprentice said as he glanced down at the dead bodies.
“Why run when I have the strength needed to protect myself. The only time you should run is if you are out of options.” Yan replied.
“Then it seems you are my last option.” The apprentice spoke.
From the way he was speaking, Yan seemed to understand that he was in some sort of trouble. Otherwise he would not be here right now.
“You have already killed them, so that means you are not scared of the alliance. I have a favour to ask of you.” The apprentice said.
“Those things are not cheap, and my price could be quite high.”
The youth produced a golden ring as he held it up and showed it to Yan. “This is my master's ring, it has enough money to last ten lifetimes, precious resources, and even his own research.”
Yan shook his head. “I do not need money, but I could use an extra hand. So, are you willing to become one of my extra hands? But before that.” Yan looked at the alliance members bodies. “This is a normal occurrence, and in the future the alliance will be no more. So I ask again, are you willing to be one of my extra hands?”

Marrow
Marrow was old... older than me or you. Older than the nation he lived in. And older than anyone he knew. Which is not surprising, because he did not know anyone else. He had been sitting, or perhaps leaning is the more apt expression, in a closet for many, many years, and had done nothing but stare. But eating, or rather chewing, a spider opened up another world to him. A world with a voice that was talking to him - to HIM! Marrow did not get what the voice was saying, but that was secondary at this point. And Marrow started to feel restless. Nuff said. If you like a sometimes quirky skeleton as the main character and want to ride along for its coming of age, or perhaps rather coming of sapience story... give it a shot. It is a litrpg context with skills, levels, heroes and monsters... and a skeleton. Not sure yet how fast the skeleton will level... we'll have to wait and see. As a disclaimer... this is my secondary novel... my main story is ongoing and most of my time is dedicated to that. As such, new chapters will, at first, be rather infrequent and irregular. If things go well, I may shift more attention to the story, but we shall see how things go.

The Eternal Vigil
The year is 2220, a time when governments and nation-states are slowly becoming a thing of the past. Instead, all prominent parts of human society are now organizing around the commands of three great Artificial Intelligences, owned and operated by the world's largest corporation. World peace has been achieved, and the very word 'politics' has disappeared from people's lips. Religion has largely disappeared, replaced in some parts by worshipping of the great AIs, but mostly substituted by a devotion to material goods and faith in the market. There is now a general consensus that the best form of government has been found. No, it is not democracy, nor is it autocracy or oligarchy. Instead, it is technocracy - rule by the learned, the intelligent, and the skilled. And who are more learned, intelligent, and skilled than the great AIs? Exactly, no one. The AIs will correct some market failures once in a while, but shall otherwise let the market be free. After all, the freer the market, the freer the people. Some may question how society advanced to this stage, but that is all they will do - question. Because they will not find answers, for history is no longer taught anywhere. After all, it is not a practical subject. One cannot get a decently paying job with a history degree. Society doesn't have any time for people to idly ponder about the past. No, this is a practical society of practical people: engineers, doctors, lawyers, developers, managers, bankers, soldiers, and the such. My name is Aiden Scivit and I used to be one such practical man: minding my own business, doing my job, with the faith that hard work will always be rewarded by the market...and that politics and philosophy were things thought of by idly people who leech off society. But this all changed, and here is my story, my history. Just because the stories of ages long past have been erased, does not mean that a brand new beginning cannot be created. The story is already finished but I still need to do some editing so a chapter should be released each day for a month. It is a bit political, as you can probably tell by the introduction, so there is that (it will low-key read like a philosophy dump 10% of the time, so really it's like Atlas Shrugged but liberal and worse lol). Also, I actually wrote this in grade 10 as part of my MYP Personal Project, and recently touched up on it for online publication. Finally, if you find the writing style passable and are interested in my other works, check out the one in the link below. It is a fantasy set in the Ancient Greek world, and is completed and uploaded in full: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/35099/the-oresteia-modernized
