Carl watches as all attention is completely taken off of him. Currently, the Dragonkin lady and the monster that ate his adopted son are currently in a fight to the death. Carl wants to help the lady but his hands are violently shaking and he is barely strong enough to hold up the sword.
That is when a notification appears in Carl’s system. Only have ever gotten two notifications from the system before, Carl quickly looks at it and sees a message from The Archiver.
‘The Gods have taken notice of you. You will either find great fortune with them or death. Good luck, and may you entertain us until you die.’
The second Carl that Carl finishes reading the message from The Archiver, another one appears. This time it is from a Deity called The Keeper of Secrets.
‘Hello, Carl I am the Keeper of Secrets as you may or may not know you and multiple realities have collided together and have been brought to your new home GALACTOR. Multiple gods have arisen to protect and help the mortals survive such a collision such as I and my colleagues from the Pantheon Ascendancy of Power. You have just witnessed a fight between two blessed people one blessed by Evil and the other blessed by many a god. My pantheon wishes to help but to do so we need to be known, so I ask will you help us help reality? I know it must be scary but you’ve seen the things that you’ll be facing earlier. I offer a skill to survive and I offer you a spot as my priest for more skills in the future. If you deny the offer I will hold no resentment and you shall still be given a skill,so can I trust you to trust us?’ - The Keeper of Secrets

Following the message, there is a prompt that says Carl has been offered a skill and there are two boxes. One that says ‘Accept’ and the other one says ‘Decline’. Not having ever even heard of The Keeper of Secrets, Carl is a little skeptical at first. However, knowing that The Archiver confirmed this was a Deity of some kind, and the situation he is in, Carl is in no place to decline help.
He presses accept and presses the Roll button twice. The first D4 lands on a 4. The D20 flies in the air and lands on a 9.
Carl receives a skill called Deafen Common Utility Skill. The skill lets the user use magic to try and deafen whoever they choose. It doesn’t have the highest chance of succeeding, however, it can still be helpful.
Right after accepting the skill, another notification appears before Carl. A message and a random weapon from The Drake of Justice and Adventure.
‘I am a friend and ally of The Keeper of Secrets. I will give you a weapon for your potential battle and survival against the ghoul. I will be grateful to you if you help my future champion live.‘ - The Drake of Justice and Adventure
Carl accepts the weapon without hesitation, hoping to soon gain favors from a couple of gods. The D20 flies into the air once again and lands on a 4. Carl receives the Spear of the Righteous (Common Weapon)! The Spear can only be used by people with a righteous heart. It is rare that someone would actually be accepted by the weapon, however Carl seems to bond with the weapon immediately.
A final notification appears. Before looking at it, Carl takes a quick glance at the fight between Atral and Nekesh. Atral is currently missing an arm, and Nekesh doesn’t seem to be hurt at all. Carl’s heart drops to the bottom of his chest and quickly looks at the notification.

‘Carl be brave, I am an ally of The Keeper of Secrets and The Drake of Justice and Adventure.’
Without even reading the rest of it or even the name of the Deity, Carl immediately accepts everything that the Deity offered. This includes a random class, a random armor, and a sponsorship. The 2 D20s are quickly rolled and the numbers are a 17 and a 9. Carl doesn’t even look at his class and an armor set that has a spade, a club, a heart, and a diamond on the chest.
Carl tries to activate his Deafen skill and he feels it connect with the ears of Nekesh.
Immediately, Nekesh freezes in place. His head races from side to side and Nekesh scratches at his ears with an intense fury.
Seeing that he has succeeded, Carl yells at Atral.
“He cannot hear anything, now is the time to attack!”
As Carl finishes his statement, he sees the state that Atral is in. Her stomach is cut open and he insides are starting to spill out. Blood seeps out of her mouth and her eyes are starting to turn glossy.
Carl quickly runs over to the dragon woman, panicking over her condition.
“Hey! HEY! Come on don’t die on me!” Carl yells while tears form in his eyes. No one asked for the situation they are all in. Poor Harry only wanted a wife and now he is inside of the stomach of a horrendous monster. Now this unfortunate Dragonkin woman might just join him in the afterlife.
“P… Po…”
“Spit it out woman!”
“Potion.” Atral whispers to Carl while pointing over at Nekesh.
Below the Ghoul who is still scratching at its ears is a leather bag. Inside of the leather bag shines a glass bottle with a bright red liquid inside.
Understanding what the woman means, Carl stands up from Atral’s side and brandishes his spear.
Calming his heart, Carl takes a deep breath and his eyes fill with resolve. Carl refuses to let someone else die from a monster while he still breathes.
“Get ready to die you wretched creature!”

The Last Science [SE]
[SE has the same content as the original story, split into smaller chunks for easier reading. This story is on a temporary hiatus due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. I work in healthcare and unfortunately no longer have the freetime to continue posting on a regular basis. As soon as our workload decreases, I will return. Thanks for reading! 💙] No one ever knows the whole story. Deep in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, the fading town of Rallsburg stumbles upon an amazing discovery—magic itself. Faced with potentially world-shattering power, the people of Rallsburg keep the secret for themselves. Led by Rachel DuValle, a perpetually underestimated college student with grand ambitions, they seek to found a new society. The world beyond suspects nothing, but magic cannot stay hidden forever. A train arrives in Rallsburg carrying Alden Bensen, a directionless high school graduate. To him, magic could represent meaning for his life, an explanation for his empty existence. This potent force offers anyone the power to change humanity forever—or send it cascading into swift and total annihilation. The Last Science is an ongoing science-fiction / low-fantasy web novel series, focused on the modern world with a twist. New societies bud and grow, but the people who make them up are imperfect and flawed. The story includes elements of mystery, action, crime, interpersonal drama, relationships, philosophy, sociology, politics, and much more, all centered on the perspective characters driving the tale. This is the "Scraps Edition" of the story, where the chapters have been split up into bite-size chunks (roughly 1500-3000 words), for your convenience. The prose has been edited from its original form, with some improvements, but there are no content differences from the original. New chapters will be posted throughout each week starting on Friday and appearing on multiple days thereafter, depending on the length of the chapter. Content Warning (by request): This series delves into some topics and situations which may be upsetting for some readers. In American rating parlance, the narrative would be rated PG-13 (except for language), but some have noted the story can get pretty dark on occasion. Please use your best judgment, and don't be afraid to take breaks and come back later. I'll still be here! [Discord] - come hang out and chat!
