《Approaching Ascension (Book 1) [Hiatus before Book 2]》Chapter 074

Fang Hao spent a week just relaxing. He didn't do any tasks inside the safe zone of the sect, nor did he go out hunting / murdering for xp / loot or even cultivating for that matter. Only eating, drinking and sleeping. Fang Hao Then spent another month or so to thoroughly memorize the cultivation technique. The Primal Thunder Cultivation Technique was a little different from most of the other cultivation techniques he was exposed till now.
The Primal Thunder Scripture had three components. It consisted of a contemplation image, mnemonic chants and Qi circulation pathways. Surprisingly, it didn't have a single hand seal or somatic (movement-based) component associated with it. All other cultivation techniques (or spells for that matter) he was exposed to had certain gestures/hand-seals/movements associated with it. While he could shorten or even eliminate some of the gestures/hand-seals if he was proficient enough with a spell, it was the first time he encountered a Cultivation technique which had no movements/hand-seals associated with it.
An outrageous and bold idea was forming in his mind. Since this cultivation technique had no movements associated with it...what would happen if he tried to combine certain movements of the other cultivation techniques while he learned it. This would be an outrageous and unthinkable thought to any other Qi Condensation Disciple, and would be akin to a thought crime.
These Cultivation Techniques and Scriptures usually had two sources. One way to obtain these cultivation techniques and spells was to either obtain them in lucky chances/ancient inheritances/long-lost legacies. Another was to create them. Creation of cultivation techniques or even spells was not a cakewalk. One had to depend on incredible good fortune of insight or luck chance to comprehend a spell/ cultivation technique. More commonly, it was purposely created by Old monsters with incredible cultivation bases.

Although cultivation was defiance of the heavens and granted increasing lifespan the further one progressed, the increase in longevity wasn't infinite. Sooner or later, even a senior with incredibly monstrous talent would find himself unable to progress his cultivation if he survived long enough. Some of them went mad with desperation doing crazy and callous acts in their period of desperation before their lifespans ended. Some of them devoted all their means to do bone-chilling acts of cruelty in an attempt to further extend their lives.
However, some of these old monsters accepted their impeding death and focused the last portion of their lives to leave their legacy I the cultivation world. They would attempt to distill their cultivation experience and insights in the form of Cultivation Techniques and Spells for juniors to assimilate and try to learn from. A vast majority of spells and cultivation manuals fell in this category.
That is why, the more powerful a cultivation manual / spell was; the more specialized were its requirements for practicing it. Of course there were exceptions to this, but by and large most cultivation manuals and spells reflected this generalization.
For a little baby in Qi Condensation, who hadn't even completed half of a 60 year cycle, to attempt a modification to a well established and proven Foundation Establishment Cultivation Method consciously without sudden bursts of enlightenment was nothing short of blasphemy in the cultivation world.
But Fang Hao had a broader outlook than most. He had an entirely different outlook from his past life experience in a technology-based society in Earth. While he wouldn't call his previous life a scientist of any caliber, he was aware of the scientific approach of observation and experimentation. While he feared the consequences of the failed attempt, he was also excited at the prospect of a successful outcome and the possible rewards from it in the system.

Learning/Upgrading spells and leveling granted him skill points, which he could use to upgrade spells directly, without spending the effort to do it the hard way. But doing it the hard way granted him bonus experience and skill points. He had only evolved one spell till now, the Flame Snake spell to the Fire Serpent spell using skill points. It had cost him a whooping 12 skill points to Evolve the Flame Snake spell from perfection proficiency to the Fire Serpent spell at Basic proficiency.
Judging by the skill point costs, if he had managed to evolve the spell the hard way, he would have been rewarded with decent amount of skill points. He wanted to attempt evolving spells the hard way for the skill point reward, but he had no inspiration or road-map of how to proceed about it.
His Qi Cultivation Manuals also rewarded skill points whenever he learned a new layer or made a breakthrough. So how large would the skill point reward be if he managed to customize a Cultivation Technique? While the risks were significant and Fang Hao would regret it immensely if he screwed things up, he was determined to explore and exploit the SYSTEM. He clearly understood that the SYSTEM which he had access to was his biggest advantage in this life and he continued to shy away from exploring its boundaries, he would always be mediocre;or a little above average at best.
Furthermore he had a vague primal sense of unease and urgency, which was instinctively compelling him to get stronger ever since his Master left for Sect Business. It was slowly but surely influencing him to take risks and make decisions which he would have otherwise avoided. He was overtly cautious and more than a little paranoid by nature.
Despite that, he had actively put himself into situations which was essentially life-and-death conflicts with multiple disciples of cultivation bases similar with himself. No matter how well he prepared or how much confidence he had in his Divine Vajra Body Scripture, things could have easily gone horribly wrong.
Even his recent major decision of favoring the more offensive Primal Thunder Scripture over his defensive ideal of Thunder-rock Carapace Manual was in part influenced by the instinctive need to grow stronger as fast as possible. He had tasted the explosive gain in experience and skill proficiency from battling and murdering disciples with a similar cultivation base which was multiple times faster than just restricting himself to safe chores and cultivation. How could he sustain such a high speed of advancement if he chose his primary cultivation technique as the one which specialized in running away?
