《Stranger Than Fiction》Chapter 40: 25th Hour

Darkness.
Its STATE was damaged beyond repair. Multiple wreckages of constructed terrain were consuming large quantities of Anomalous Energy. Sudden spike in Monster Soul Prototype influx was alarming. Whatever intruder had invaded past its defenses, the Crypt of Fiendish Worms was finding it difficult to put it down.
This could be a MAJOR PROBLEM.
Invaders were a non-issue. NORMAL Invader Activity was essential to constant survival. Information from the Watchers indicated the presence of a He-Who-Consumes-Within. Conflicting observation, since no foreign Anomalous Energy was traced.
The Crypt of Fiendish Worms extended its awareness outwards. EXTERNAL ALTERATIONS negative, as usual. The land was soaked in ANTI-LIFE concepts.
Not consumable. Rejected.
It turned its gaze inward. Vital statistics showed the INNER LAYER bordering on NEARLY DESTROYED.
Intruder He-Who-Consumes-Within REMOVED Monster Prototype THOGGUA from SOUL CRYPT.
Intruder He-Who-Consumes-Within REMOVED Monster Prototype OROCORAN from SOUL CRYPT.
Intruder He-Who-Consumes-Within REMOVED Monster Prototype SEUGATHI from SOUL CRYPT.
Intruder He-Who-Consumes-Within REMOVED Monster Prototype NEOTHELID from SOUL CRYPT.
…
…
The list went on and on. This was OUTRAGEOUS.
He-Who-Consumes-Within was CONSUMING Monster rototypes from ITSELF, and the Crypt of Fiendish Worms was doing NULL. It could do NULL about it.
Unacceptable.
Unacceptable.
A wave of Anomalous Energy expanded outward from ITSELF, radiating from the crystals of the SOUL CRYPT.
Anomalous Energy Reflected
Anomalous Energy Absorbed
Neonate Anomaly Detected within Expansion Radius
PREDATOR Detected within Expansion Radius
Probability of Destruction of SOUL CRYPT = 47%
Unacceptable.
Utterly Unacceptable.
He-Who-Consumes-Within is a CONTRADICTION
PREDATOR is an AGGRAVATION
RECOMMENDATION
Instant-Termination of both Species.
Tempting recommendation. But Instant-Termination would require a forceful trigger of FAILSAFE.
Not recommended.
But…necessary.
Soul Crypt contraction was underway. Monster count had been drastically reduced. All Anomalous Expansions were on hold.
It was time for Instant-Termination.
Safety Off!
Initiate Extermination

Mother of Learning
Zorian is a teenage mage of humble birth and slightly above-average skill, attending his third year of education at Cyoria's magical academy. He is a driven and irritable young man, consumed by a desire to ensure his own future and free himself of the influence of his family, whom he resents for favoring his brothers over him. Consequently, he has no time for pointless distractions or paying attention to other people's problems. As it happens, time is something he is about to get plenty of. On the eve of the Cyoria's annual summer festival, he is killed and brought back to the beginning of the month, just before he was about to take a train to Cyoria. Suddenly trapped in a time loop with no clear end or exit, Zorian will have to look both within and without to unravel the mystery before him. And he does have to unravel it, for the time loop hadn't been made for his sake and dangers lurk everywhere... Repetition is the mother of learning, but Zorian will have to first make sure he survives to try again - in a world of magic, even a time traveler isn't safe from those who wish him ill. ********************************** If anyone is interested, I have a story-related worldbuilding site that can be found here. I don't update it as often as I should, but there is a fair amount of content there already. It also contains a page with all the fanart, fan translations, audio books and the like - you can reach it directly by clicking this link. I have a patreon account for those kind people that want to give me money. It also contains info for those who want to donate via paypal. The story was originally posted on fictionpress, back in 2011. When I reached chapter 91, I started uploading the story to RoyalRoad, one chapter per day. The story will continue to be updated on fictionpress as well as here, and can be reached by clicking on this link if somebody is interested, though at this point there is nothing there that isn't also on RoyalRoad. ********************************** The cover you see on the side has been made by a fellow RoyalRoad user Sydorow. Thank you for your time and art skills.
8 118Journey of Infinite Steps
Science Fiction/ Low fantasy Iliad. Oliver just wanted a job that could keep his family fed, and himself sane. Was that so much to ask for? Apparently. As he instead ends up facing monsters and dodging his way to another world instead. Competent as he views himself figuring out how to reopen a portal back home by himself is defiantly above his knowledge base. Of coarse it would be vastly simpler if he could keep 'getting back home' as his primary goal. 'Staying alive' is unfortunately a far more immediate and relevant goal. I will post any content warnings on a Per Chapter basis. Divisive content will be as skip-able as I can reasonably manage Discord Link will be available for those interested in assisting editing/ coauthoring. Especially character writers/those willing to work out the math/ economies and world building even if only as a wall to bounce ideas off of.-----Full Synapsis contains serious spoilers----- Looking to take care of his family, Oliver finds himself flung into a faraway place. Try as he might, his Iliad will not be simple or peaceful as he'd like. Alas the slow and unending war of Chaos and Order has long memories and longer reach. If Oliver is to make his way back home it looks like He'll have to solve the universe one fight and mystery at a time. Especially as the Laws of Physics shift, often on a per world basis. Hopefully there is still a home to come back to.
8 146Godsmith
A young blacksmith named Hanma is leading a quiet and rather boring life. Having a shop outside the city isn't very adventurous. Then suddenly, when the mine the village gathers its ore is turned into a dungeon, Hanma gets recruited by a very strange figure to be his Wandersmith. Inside this so-called low-level dungeon, they find the strangest of artifacts.
8 173The Virtues' Magecraft
The Golden Dawn has initiated the Age of Tribulation. Destruction is imminent for each of the Nine Realms. And on Midgard, the Princes of Hell are returning. To prevent the destruction these demons will bring, the Magecraft Association has called upon seven mages to handle them. One of those seven is Alexander Lane. A Demon-Born without any training in magic. This ordinary life of his in this unordinary world has always been a struggle. But in his ever changing reality, it'll only become more of a curse. He must learn magecraft and fight for the sake of his world. For his life, and for others.
8 216Monstrous Heroic Decimation
Can a single person rise above everything the world throws at him? A world where a single person's life is only worth the amount they're able to carve out of the other's body... a world where the veil of society is held together with a thin veneer, in tiny pockets of a world they once inhabited... Sam is about to hit the coming of age ceremony, and his life up til this point has been good with two caring parents attending school everyday, yet will he throw all that away because of what's about to come? A cultivation-esque, monster taming/evolution story.
8 161A Warlock's Lament
Gild and Giselle were happily married gnomish warlocks just looking for a way to get more power. Rather than spend years and years studying magic at some pretentious university, they elected to bring a moderately powered demon into their world and pact with it. Unfortunately, they pulled a Demon Lord through, who promptly took Giselle, leaving Gild alone and blaming himself. Now, he is doing everything in his power to bring her back, even if it means travelling to the Other Realm itself, home to the demons. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge]
