《The World of Argos》Chapter 4.2 – Who designed this HUD?!

Milly was looking at her own blue screen when she looked up at Zach. Seeing that he was pointing at the blue screen hovering over the chair, Milly when ahead and dismissed the screen. Sitting down in the chair a small attachment to the right arm rest came up, it had the look of a cup holder but Zach soon realized that it was for something else. With a wave of Milly’s hand her grimoire appeared, unlike Zach’s which had looked like a stainless steel pipe with a gem and runes, Milly’s grimoire was elegantly wooden club the two feet long. Slowly Milly slide her grimoire into the arm rest and a pop up came up infront of Zach.

Zach dismissed the screen and sat down on the chair. The arm rest grimoire holder came up and Zach summoned his Grimoire. Zach was slightly surprised to see that the stainless steel metal shaft that appeared in his hand had a small amount of purple gold that appeared in the etchings of runes and drawings. Grim’s gemstone had also grown and appeared to have a symbol carved into the face. Looking at it symbol it appeared to be based around an octagon, but curves, triangles, and lines intersected it making the octagon the back symbol. Zach stared at it for a moment and realized that the all the curves and lines began speak to him, as if saying it was some complex puzzle that was awaiting him.
Zach shook his head and placed the Grimoire into the arm rest. There was a soft clicking sound and Zach saw light began form in front of him. Smiling, it was like a hologram that contained a wireframe of the village. Using common zoom commands and hand movements the map moved around. What surprised him was that there was a new structure in the village. It looked like was some kind of ancient arena, for it was a pit that held multiple stairways going down into a rectangle stone floor. On each sides of the bottom walls was a circular vault door that rolled over an opening on each side. “Grim, what the hell is this thing?”
Grim appeared to Zach’s left, but instead of the glowing form or small flame, Grim appeared as a 16 year boy with a patch of facial hair that was growing very thinly on his chin. Zach knew it was Grim because he had the same facial features as when Grim appeared in his mana pool, except now nether of them were there. “Yeah, my evolution can give me better control over light mana that I use to project myself. So I can blend in a little bit better, I also have control over dark mana and can move things through force.” Grim looked up at the wire frame hologram and then spoke again. “Alright, this is the dungeon entrance. The doorways are actually gateways into the pocket dimension that the dungeon is in. Usually a town designates two as entrances and two as exits to avoid stopping people from getting in and out of the dungeon.”

Zach shook his head and spoke, “Milly, I can see that the dungeon is currently open right now. Do you want to close it?”
Milly was fighting with some blue screens when her voice spoke up, “Zach, go ahead and put the dungeon in a growth state for the next couple of weeks. I need you to work on giving the golems orders. I am going to send you some of the City Quests that Andy and I were working on.”
Zach started looking at the dungeon for a toggle switch or something that would let him set it to grow. After his hand passed through the hologram the sixth time and he heard Grim laugh. “Alright, asshole. What the hell am I doing wrong? You would think the control scheme or inputs for the dungeon would be simple toggle switches or press commands.”
Grim raised an eyebrow, “Well that is interesting way of doing things, why would you think that would be more helpful? Currently, we have menu options with a bunch of Yes and No choices.”
Zach groaned at the idea of having to go through option after option trying to find the correct choice. “Grim, it’s one of your powers to monitor and manipulate the blue screens right?” Grim opened his mouth to say something, but thought better of it and simply nodded. “Ok, for now I want a simple blue screen with some of the key features for the dungeon in one column and the choice to turn it on or off in the other.”
Dungeon MenuDungeon GrowthOnOffMultiple InstancesOnOffSet Rules for Dungeon Party?YesNoSet Experience Tithe?YesNoSet Mana Tithe?YesNoSet Loot Tithe?YesNoSet Dungeon Quests?YesNoSet Dungeon Theme?YesNo
Zach pressed the On button for Dungeon Growth and it turned over. “Ah, soooo much nicer.”
Grim scowled, “Zach, I get that by setting up this type of Menu, you can speed through your options better, but do you even know what you just did?” Zach dismissed the blue screen and watched as the dungeon’s doors slid close over the openings. “Right now the dungeon is considered young, but by putting it into a growth state its inhabitants will start to grow to higher levels, its mana will concentrate, and it could gain evolutions or different mana monsters. You give up control over the entire dungeon to make it more difficult until it is beaten.”
“Milly wanted it to grow, so I did just that what’s the problem?” Zach said as he looked at Grim. It was obvious that he had something to say and Zach couldn’t get anything done until he had said it.
“Listen, I know it was an order and Milly would have done it, but flicking switches without understanding what you are doing is going to make you think this is a game. But it’s not a game this is real life and people die if you don’t understand what you are doing.” Grim gave Zach a serious look after his warning.
Zach nodded, “Ok Grim, I get it part of me wants to make all these menu items go away so I can do my job more efficiently. How about later on tonight you give me information on all the information that I just sorted through and for now we will just push binary menu options. Can you give me Milly and Andy’s quests they were working on?”
Grim nodded and several screens came up.

“This is crazy Grim, why in the world would they have started so many quests? It would have been much more efficient to just focus on one quest and continued on.” Zach said as he thought over what Milly and Andy’s logic was.
Grim spoke up, “First Zach, just because you have a building doesn’t mean you have someone to work it. I am sure Milly could have summoned a hundred homes and shops by now, but who would have manned them? Who would have used their tools and crafted something? Second, what was the harm in accepting? Milly was probably burrowing time to convince villagers before making a choice; for example the healer’s longhouse has almost enough mana to summon it probably because James accepted the role and responsibility. Additionally, she is probably using most of her mana to expand the village.”
Damn, Grim was right, the blue screens were making him think of this as a game. He would have simply built building after building completing quest after quest. Asking Grim to bring up the Golems and tasks they could perform a blue screen appeared before him.

Zach looked at Grim and thought about his advice, “I figure Mapping the surrounding area would be the best use for Vuhn, and patrolling outside the boundary for Ruzzlar. What do you think would be the best for the village with the other two?”
Grim smiled and said, “Assign them to Healer’s Longhouse and then touch the Wall Quest for them. Might as well build up a queue.”
Zach began making the assignments for the Golems as Milly slammed down her fist the chair. “Andy, can you get out there and stop everyone from spending their extra 100 DP. I just received notifications that Two Headed Chickens, Mushroom Goats, and Spice Pigs are being bought. We need them to focus and buy some skills to help with the village.” Milly seemed upset from the expenditures and Zach had to agree. Andy walked over to one of the walls between the keystones and slowly it dropped downward, opening up the enclosed Mana Pylon to the village outside.

The Eighth Warden
Cast out from his knightly order for using magic, Corec has no idea what lies ahead. Leaving his homeland to make his own way in the world, he finds himself linked to a beautiful woman through a mysterious rune. With otherworldly forces manipulating events behind the scenes, the two must seek help to free themselves from the unknown magic. But when the runes continue affecting others, Corec and his companions—an elven druid, a con man with a hidden past, and a thief who wants to be a bard—must work to discover truths about themselves and the world in which they live. I post the chapters here as I write them. There's also a revised version of each book that's collected and published as an ebook and paperback. That version is compatible with the version posted here—the story itself hasn't changed; it's just gone through additional rounds of editing.

Gods How I Hate Nature
While there are always choices in life, lately they’ve all tended to skew between bad, terrible, and suicidal. Tome finds himself typically choosing the latter. As if people and plants consistently trying to kill him wasn’t bad enough, he finds himself sent off to a Mage Spire along with a self-righteous other worlder (as though there were any other kind). Add to this some powerful figures in black, a sadistic instructor, an uptight law keeper, and Tome just wants to go back to his room, down a pint, and forget about everything… But, when someone starts a fight, especially someone bigger and stronger, you bide your time and strength. Before you can get revenge, you have to settle for surviving and slowly gaining power. That means accepting the most suicidal choices, doing the jobs no one else will do, always smiling, and not slitting that other worlder’s throat… (The story will incorporate comedy, but it will be a dark story. This won't be a happy, uplifting tale, but it also won't be too morose or depressing. Though if you're rooting for the other worlders, then I suppose it will be...)

Ars Magica
Our vision comes back into focus. Our eyes, while being able to perceive the immediate surroundings, still leave us with our minds uncomprehending towards what is actually occurring. Sure, there are definitive things that we can focus on, like the fact that we're either out upon the open sea or the open ocean, there not being much of a difference with no land in sight, as well as the fact that we appear to be upon a haphazardly constructed metal boat, whose seams are barely able to keep a hold of themselves in the crashing waves. However, that does not let us understand what exactly is causing the waves in the first place. If we were to rewind time, we'd find ourselves upon a calm sea under a peaceful sky with the only difference, being a small whirlpool that would be the precursor towards this uproar around the boat. Lightning flashes in the sky, with no clouds being near, and anyone actually manning the boat has either died towards the cause of the smashing tides in the first place, or are fighting amongst the flashes of lightning, all while trying not to become devoured, demolished, and utterly decimated by the beast roiling in the whirling waves. To better understand exactly what is happening here, there is one singular event that needs to be understood, that needs to be explained, and that is the arrival of a creature named Dave. Stepping back from current events and going towards this creature's first appearance in the world, we begin to hear the sound of water slowly dripping across rocky ground. The cavern is utterly silent except for this one constant, its cause feeding channels downwards, sloping towards cracks in the rubble along the floor from broken stalagmites and stalactites. And there, lying on top of something which had fallen over recently, judging from its cracks, is a person, the creature named Dave. His form is fast asleep, either from the impact or from an intoxication, judging from the smell upon its breath. A bright light suffuses into it for a second, giving life towards the pale skin, before it slowly dies down back to the comfortable black of the cave that it's within. Before this moment in time, Dave did not exist in the physical world. At least, not in the reality that he finds himself born into. We do not know whether or not his existence is simply a cosmic joke, or something that is being played out on purpose. All that we do know, is that one moment, the body was not in the cave, and simply formed in the next. The actual earliest time that we know Dave exists, is the interpolation of the memories of J-209, which we'll begin looking into shortly to gain context towards the coming narrative that is being written and hastily trying to keep itself written. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Warning: This story has several things which might turn its readers away. The first is that this story has shifting points of perspective. Don't worry about that previous sentence too much though, as the main character will always have a first person perspective associated with them. However, any other character from which we're viewing the story from will either be in third-person, as we are not necessarily in their shoes at the moment, or in first person, given that the narrator is an actual physical presence within the story. For the most part, chapters will be self-contained with their perspectives, so there will not be an abundance of switching perspectives within the same chapter. The most that an average reader would have to worry about is the fact that perspectives can switch between chapters. The second thing is that the main character is a bit on the 'special' side of things. He's not exactly mentally there most of the time, so there will be some times that his personality or his thoughts do not actively align with his actions. The third, and final thing of importance, is the fact that past the first couple of chapters, nothing has been planned in advance. There are arcs and plots that I want to do, want to implement, or have already been set into motion from our main character's introduction to the world, but the method that I use for my story writing and generating leads towards a bit more random chance being enabled. Basically...there's a lot of dice rolling behind the scenes. To not complicate the story further than its regular LitRPG elements, the rolls will not be publicly available. However, there will be knowledge within the author's notes on whether or not there were positive or negative critical rolls that had occurred within the chapter. You have been warned. Updates: Mondays & Fridays (Schedule permitting) Typical Chapter Length: (2,000-3,000)

Pillars Between Us
It started with the dent left by the Forest Sprite; A small crack in the ice that encased his memories. Curtis knew that something was off, realizing that he wasn’t who he thought he was and— perhaps Ellis wasn’t the one meant for him. --It's a fantasy novel set in a world where people inhabit on pillars-- (think of m*necaft sky block, you'll get what I mean) -- then give it a hint of action, mystery and (twisted) romance-- and it's influenced by Japanese fantasy light novels (cuz I read a lot of em'). But I'm sure it's a weird one cuz the style of writing isn't the Japanese to English translated kind of style but rather the orthodox English novel kind of writing (which includes a bunch of errors and broken English thanks to me!). In any case, if you're up for it, just beware the story starts out pretty slow.. I mean-- back then, I was still inexperienced ok! I'm gettin' better along the way, Hmmph!
