Chapter: Testing information
Erik used his organic scan spell, looking at his mana system in greater detail, from the mana gates and channels to the area between the bottom of his rib cage and his bellybutton, this was where his mana gathered and his mana pool.
He focused on trying to control the faint blue mist in his veins.
'At first nothing was going on, remembering how spells worked and the different ways that people created spells back on Earth Erik imagined the mana moving through his body towards his mana pool. He thought of a few different things before he sensed a change in his mana's movement.
==========
Mana manipulation
==========
Move your mana in a more precise manner.
==========
Subsitutive effect, does not cost mana but allows spells greater focus.
==========
Erik felt his ability to move the mana increase, he drew more in towards his mana pool, but after a certain time he felt a full feeling that continued to turn uncomfortable the more mana he drew into his mana pool.
He stopped after a few minutes, letting out a gasp of air, his eyes opening as cold sweat covered his forehead.
The mana dispersed through his body once again, that pressured feeling falling away.
Erik moved to Rugrat's pack and pulled out the wrist strength device there, along its side it showed different numbers to show how much pressure was being exerted.
Erik squeezed three times, remembering the three numbers.
Erik pulled out his blade and rolled up his sleeve. He shook his head and jammed the blade into his forearm before he could think about his actions fully.
He let out a groan through gritted teeth, his healing spell activating according to the pain. It was now an immediate response.
Erik didn't pull the blade out as he continued to heal, his mana bar decreased as Erik stared up into a tree, tapping his leg and breathing through his nose and forcing it out through his teeth.
His mana reached about twenty percent when he pulled out the blade, he was at just five percent mana when the wound sealed up completely.
Erik took a few moments to gather himself feeling light headed from it all.
He took the grip strength tester and squeezed it three more times.
His strength had increased by at least five percent.
Erik waited for his mana to fully recover, completing two of the three tests he'd thought about. It didn't take long until his mana bar was full.
He focused his attention in on the mana gate in his left wrist.

He studied it and compared it against the mana gate at the back of his head that was open.
Erik used his newly found mana manipulation spell, the more he used it, the easier it became, it was even faster to get used to compared to the healing spell as it was moving mana through his body, not working on multiple different systems in his body to repair his injuries.
He gathered mana vapor together and drove it towards the mana gate. The mana hit the gate with a bang that ran through his body and made his hand shake.
Erik's eyebrows rose as he gathered more mana together and forced it at the mana gate, it shook and rang hard, the tremor reaching his upper arm now.
Erik let out a sigh, thankful that the first method had worked, if it hadn't, well let's just say he didn't want to be stabbing himself all day long.
His eyes focused on his wrist as he gathered up his mana, shaping it into spears, directing them through his channels and striking his mana gate, they struck again and again, the ringing increasing in frequency, a slight cracking sound could be heard by Erik as he sped up his hits, compressing his mana to the limit and sending it hurtling at his mana gate. Part of the mana was being absorbed by the mana gate each time, another cracking noise rang through Erik's body, his mana system humming as he drew in mana through his head mana gate and directed it straight into his wrist mana gate.
Unknowingly his control over his mana increased as he could compress it tighter and guide it easily through his channels, increasing the speed of his attacks.
Erik lost sense of time, his eyes scanned the area but his mind was focused on his mana gate.
Cracks visible to Erik had spread across the mana gate and there was a faint wisp of blue in the two circles.
Under Erik's relentless attacks the gate weakened to the point of no return.
Erik barely registered as the first part of the gate disappeared, dissolving.
His eyes sharpened, coming out of the dull repetitive process as mana was stirred up in the surrounding area it centered on Erik's wrist, the blockage in his mana gate dissolving as his mana channels went in reverse, instead of sending mana at the gate, it was coming through. The dim lines around the gate turned brighter until Erik could see two rings underneath where the mana whirlpool was located.
Erik felt his entire body being suffused with power, it was as if he could run a kilometer without tiring, that he could go days without sleep. He was drunk on power as Erik felt that power start to settle down, his mana pool refilling quickly.

Erik who had closed his eyes feeling that power rushing in, now opened his eyes, a faint blue light fading in their depths.

Erik bit the inside of his lip in thought, his brow furrowing. The ten realms guide hadn't been explicit but it seemed from the information and the way it was talked about, most people would find it hard to open more mana gates.
I can probably open another mana gate tomorrow," Erik said, looking at his right wrist.
If others were to learn of how easily Erik had opened a mana gate or his thoughts many wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry, unless someone had a great backing, then they might never open another mana gate than the ones they had at birth unless they met a lucky chance.
Erik had more questions, but he had only got the introductory book on the ten realms after all. If he wanted more information then he would have to seek it out himself.
Erik wanted to test out the mediation and gathering the ten realm experience, but to do so, one had to close off the outside world.
With stabbing himself and opening his mana gate he had been aware of what was going on around him at least.
Erik looked up at the two moons in the sky, the third one had gone down a little bit ago. He pulled out a pad of paper and started to jot down plans and ideas. He still had plenty of testing to go through.
***
Wren Silaz carried the fragrance of women and drink as he walked back into his home. his smile containing a sourness. The guards around him seemed to be further away than normal as they made sure not to draw the young master's attention.
"I heard that there was an altercation at the store," a calm voice that contained a hidden power rolled across the courtyard.
The guards dropped to their knees in salute as a man reading a scroll looked up. He wore simple but elegant robes, the Silaz family crest on his chest, his eyes were clear as he looked at Wren. Looking between the two, one might see the similarities there.
"Father," Wren said, cupping his hands and bowing to this man, not daring to show any hint of rebellion.
"Speak," Elan Silaz had established the Silaz trading house, bringing the family great prosperity and opening up their path to the top. He had three sons and one daughter. Wren wished to take over the business while Elan's other sons and daughter looked to join a powerful sect, advancing to the second realm and increasing the strength and backing of the Silaz family. The strong ruled, the weak obeyed, this was the ten realms unwritten rule.
Wren couldn't hide his anger fully as he relayed what had happened with the two foreigners once he had returned to the store. His voice filled with displeasure and blowing up the actions the two had made against him.
Elan's scroll disappeared into his storage ring, Wren's words halted as he looked at his father who's eyebrows were slightly pinched together.
"These two that you looked down on were able to turn in a Earth rank low grade monster core, based on Appraiser Gu's comments they didn't seem too interested by the core and showed interest in the silver they were given. They are not from around here so they were likely trading the core to see what the local currency was. They gave off the feeling of being level six or a low level seven. When leaving the store even though you had them tailed, they were able to escape your tail's eyes. Then you punished your people for their failure," Elan's voice held a note of reprimand at the last sentence.
"I have already sent apothecaries to see to them, the money of which will be coming from you, and a repayment for the injustices they have suffered. These two men are not simple Wren," Elan said.
Wren ducked his head, not willing to look into his father's eyes.
Elan sighed gently seeing the clenched fists of his son. He was still a young man and liable to make his own mistakes.
Wren had been given his warning, now he would watch to see what Wren would do.
Elan hoped to groom him, but one needed to have a few failures and to have their rebellious nature tamed if they were to lead the Silaz trading house.

He loves music, specifically rhythm and drumming, and would give his left nut if it would help him drum better. He's a rock drummer, and his language is that of a rock drummer: slanged, duded, and frequently laced with profanity. He focuses on music, and makes decisions that even the author doesn't approve of. However, that means all his decisions are Kevin's decisions, not those of a system-optimizing power-gamer. There's points (All of Arc 2) where he wanders aimlessly. Goals seem foreign to him at points. What would you do if you were a musician, and the world fell apart and you no longer had an audience or band-mates. You'd be kinda lost. Kevin is. Arc 2 is a lot of Kevin not knowing what to do, going with the flow, and not being articulate enough to know that he doesn't know what to do. 1. Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★
