Avrin kept quiet for a moment then chuckled softly to himself. He didn’t really know who he was himself. He was only aware that his race was spectral and judging by what god told him, this was the first time a creature like him had been created. He didn’t really know how to answer Larissa, even if he intended to reveal much about himself, but he decided to go along with a plan. It was he had come up with in the case he was ever found out, so to speak.
Avrin’s lips moved as if they had practiced the lines spoken a thousand times. “It’s nothing special Miss Larissa. I myself wield an Enigma level ability.” Avrin spoke softly enough for only their group to hear and it worked a little too well, as their jaws had dropped in surprise. Meeting one enigma wielding user was 1 in a billion but to have 2 in one spot was most likely a once in 10 life time’s event. Kingdoms craved enigma ability users regardless of how useless they were – they would find a way to make it useful. But to have two in one spot was surely a sign of something.
Larissa gulped as she examined Avrin curiously with renewed interest “W-wow.” She approached closer to Avrin and used her ability again to examine him, only to be welcomed by the same results: not a drop of mana and a somewhat anxious looking Avrin.
“Ehm,” he cleared his throat which snapped Larissa out of it. She smiled softly, reached over, and grabbed Avrin’s hands tightly in her own as if she had found a best friend.
“S-sir Avrin, I have no doubt you are telling the truth. Another Enigma level user…all my life I have been looked at differently and praised by others. To see someone other than me living that way is something that I have craved for all my life. I have only known of two users. I’m sure you also know one of them, but the other has secluded himself and I’m not fond of the current one,” she sighed and shook her head with a smile as she gazed at Avrin.
“I-indeed.” Avrin’s cheeks were a faint red. She didn’t seem to be bad and she had that gentle motherly aura around her, but he still pulled his hands away from her. He spoke softly, as he figured he could use these people for information if things played well. He had no interest in becoming friends with such people. “I am glad I could help a fellow enigma user.” At that moment, Jin spoke with a grin, as his arms folded while he sat opposite of Avrin, his feet resting on the table.
“I don’t believe him. I can smell that this guy is hiding something.” His nose twitched which made Aleyn and Meika narrowed their eyes at Avrin. Whatever the case, it seemed they didn’t hesitate to believe Jin, which made Avrin cautious before speaking.
“Regardless if he is hiding something, we are in no position to ask. Everyone is entitled to their secrets,” Larissa said in a sort of pouty voice while glaring at the other three. Avrin was somewhat impressed as she took the words out of his mouth.

Aleyn was still cautious as she gazed at the female elf who was quietly standing beside him. “Selena, what do you think?” Aleyn seemed to place a lot of trust on this elf who stepped closer and asked Avrin a question
“Avrin was it? I’m curious – what is your enigma ability?” That question alone was simple, but precise. Larissa herself gazed at Avrin with curiosity.
Avrin had no intention of revealing his capabilities, but he smiled and nodded as he would try to trick this group of young adventurers that seemed quite well off. “My ability is nothing special… it is manipulation of darkness. Nothing special. I am only able to perfectly hide my presence.”
It seemed to make more sense and the ability itself would be quite useless unless the owner was an assassin of sorts, which would mean that the power would become deadly. Larissa seemed a little disheartened by the ability as it seemed like it was meant for the use of dark methods.
But she nodded with a smile spoke to Avrin’s defense. “See, it makes sense that he would have such an ability.” The other adventurers, apart from Jin and Aleyn, seemed to relax a bit more. But they just shrugged it off.
Avrin didn’t hesitate to speak, “So it seems like you have asked me a few questions that I had no obligation to answer. I think it’s fair that I ask some of my own.” Avrin spoke firmly and indeed he was right, regardless of the annoyed looks a few of them had. Larissa, however, nodded with a smile.
“Indeed sir Avrin, very well, we will answer three of your questions.” Avrin felt like these adventurers had been around many cities and areas, so he would have to choose wisely judging by their strength they would have heard of many legends and myths.
“My first question is what you know of the branch academy of the central continent?” Everyone was cautiously silent, Larissa included. Not for a bad reason, but they were curious as to why he wanted to know.
Aleyn decided to answer, as he was the most informative for the topic. “The central continent’s branch academy can be said to be the largest. Per year there are several thousand people wanting to apply so they have set up application areas around not only the main kingdom’s city but several other cities. Even then, it is still packed from what I know. Out of those thousands only 800 to 1000 people are accepted and they try to narrow it down as much as they can.” He ended there, before Larissa added something that made Aleyn pout quietly. “We are intending to go there ourselves to meet the date of the application stage in a few months. It’s quite a journey.”
Avrin was quiet for a moment before he smiled and asked a different question as to not lead suspicion. “Tell me, where is the best place to learn combat?” This is what perked Jin’s ear’s up. As he enjoyed fighting and he himself studied quite a bit, he decided to answer first. He spoke somewhat loudly, but only because it was in his nature to do so.
“The best place to learn combat is no doubt the eastern continent.” He grinned. It was also the place where he and his sister came from. Unfortunately, his sister was not as boastful as she plopped her fist against his head which made him whimper as a bump formed.
He gave a teary face before she spoke “Swordsmanship is best learned in the central continent. Magic can also be learned in the central continent, but the best mages other than the angels are the demons. As for archery, Agrianea obviously is right place but I doubt you’re an archer.

The eastern continent is mainly two handed weaponry. We specialize in great axes and war hammers as well as martial arts. But,” she also began to ponder martial arts some more as she herself became curious before replying. “I’m not sure where the best place to learn martial arts is. I think you would be better off asking one of the schools here for information. There should be one north west of here along the mountainous area.”
Avrin was indeed right to ask these two questions. He got quite a bit of information that he would find useful. He may not reveal it, but he had been quite a martial arts fan in his previous life and he wanted to try and learn this world’s hand to hand combat techniques that would obviously be better than that of his own universe.
“Last question then: is there anyone who may want to harm enigma ability users on Seleria?” Avrin wanted to know just in case he would be hunted for his ability. But this question made Larissa think to herself that maybe Avrin was secluded for him not to know the importance of enigma users. She answered the question, as she was better than anyone else in the understanding of it.
“People with Enigma level abilities are sought after nearly or as much as sage level combatants. They have the potential to turn the tides of war as well as do things never done before. It is also said that the children of enigma level users will often have a chance to inherit their parent’s ability. If such children are born, it means the ability itself has a better chance of passing on to the next generation. There are also people who think two enigma level users who have children will create a more powerful variant. A person who thinks this is King Leo Zircus and his court.” She had a somewhat twisted look of annoyance on her face and Avrin wondered if she had been subjected to being forced to marry someone. Could it be the person she talked about before?
Avrin smiled softly and spoke, “Thank you. It seems we are even now. If you will excuse me, I have some things I’d like to do before the night’s end.” He began to make his way towards the stairs, before hearing a voice
“Sir Avrin, would you not be willing to join us on our journey to apply? Enigma level users are guaranteed entry as well as have a much better chance to enter the main academy.”
Avrin stopped and turned as Larissa finished. He replied with a smile. “At this moment, I have no need to apply. I have many things I would like to complete but I’m sure we will indeed see each other again.”
This made Larissa’s face light up as she went over to Avrin and didn’t hesitate to hug him from behind. She felt a friendly connection since he was an enigma level user like her. Of course this made Avrin somewhat surprised, as his own face twisted a little and he thought to himself, little crone, I am not your friend. But he continued to smile while thinking ill of her.
Larissa then let go and spoke happily, “Indeed, I look forward to our future meeting, sir Avrin.” She held her own hands and bowed in a curtsey manner before turning back to face Aleyn who had an annoyed gaze and was glaring at Avrin back as he headed to the staircase.
Avrin was curious about his body’s biology. Ever since coming to Seleria he had found no urges, needed for pleasure. Perhaps his body was meant for a different purpose, but he welcomed it. If he could resist such an urge, it would be a time saver as well as be easier to resist seduction.
A few minutes had passed and he was in his room. He had decided to try and practice his ability some more to see if he could discover anything new, but not before making some more coins.
Avrin realized, on his 532th coin, that the area around the room became darker and had an ill feeling of despair, but for some reason he felt as if it were natural for him to be in such an environment. It made him breathe better as well as made him more alert and feel stronger. This possibly was the effect of dark matter seeping into the mana stream
Regardless of how he felt, he decided to not make any more coins. He wanted to leave the village tomorrow and seek out a dojo to learn martial arts. But he had a little something he wanted to do tonight.
As a few more hours passed, things started to settle down. He had discovered he could reabsorb the dark matter in the mana stream into himself and it would act as a sort of buffer but the amount would depend on how strong his body was. He felt his current state was that of a peak beginner level user, but his methods and experience in his previous world would also add to his ability but he couldn’t judge.
Avrin blinked and sighed while he walked across the dark paths of the village. His location was somewhere he had been before, his sigh was directed to the fact that he had wanted to ask where to obtain a spirit stone, but he would just ask the innkeeper when he had time.
Avrin was now in the back alley next to a shop he had been to before. The area was pitch black, apart from the occasional guard who patrolled around. The shop was the book store Avrin had bought from. He grinned to himself as he went over to the lock of the store and began to examine it.
It seemed like a magical lock, judging by the mana around it. Avrin formed a void bolt with ease and expanded it over the lock before using the void wrap ability to shrink it in a near instant out of existence. He looked around carefully and pondered that perhaps the layer of dark matter prevented the lock to react and alarm the book keeper.
Avrin entered carefully using his augmented eye he was somewhat surprised he saw several rune-like objects littering the floor. They emitted a steady mana. Perhaps this was also a form of alarm.
Avrin, using his augmented eye, easily navigated away before reaching around to the front area. He gazed down at the front desk and grinned as saw the books he craved the most. Avrin had no desire to pay a king’s ransom for these books, regardless of his ability to make gold. He would just steal them without a care.
As Avrin touched the mana of the casing, he began to emit dark matter around it and began absorbing the mana as it converted into dark matter. He grinned to himself and blinked. He looked up at the corner staircase and noticed several footsteps making their way down as well as chatter. It was the book keeper and an unknown individual.
Avrin had just opened the case and was about to steal the priceless books when he heard some words from the book keeper. “A Mythological Level object??!! I must have it! Where is it?” Avrin kept silent and, before stealing the books, he resealed it with his nebula mist before gazing around franticly. He hid around a large corner of a shelf behind the desk. He augmented his ears while he listened carefully, thinking to himself.
Surely something of such value will be mine. Avrin snickered as he listened intently to the conversation. He barely managed to avoid the two men as they walked off towards a spare room. Avrin, with his augmented hearing, could easily hear as the man accompanying the book keeper spoke.
“It’s safe, Menzo, but you won’t believe what it’s for…”

The First Magician
James died from touching something he, in hindsight, should definitely not have. As luck would have it, he was reborn into a world with magic, levels, skills, and stats. Just like an RPG! The most curious thing about this new world was that magic had only existed for thirty years. What kind of life will James lead in a world filled with monsters, dungeons, and magic? Usually will update Wednesday and Saturday, but there's always the chance I haven't gotten around to writing in a while so there may be a break. Additionally, I intend to edit heavily between arcs.
