《Curse of the Forsaken》Chapter 29 - Sometimes retreat is the only option

Jace cursed silently. He was pretty sure after the show this afternoon he could get this issue resolved, but right now he was looking at a naked kindred woman and a naked human girl, and bed barely large enough for 3 with two baby beds next to it. Verna was posing like a cool beauty, she easily could have had a centerfold in playboy. With long legs, perfect skin and nice womanly hips and breasts. Her straight flame red hair had a little orange in it to almost give the illusion of liquid fire, while the small patch of red scales at the small of her back and the back of her ankles only accentuated the cream color of her skin. Sam was sitting on the edge of the bed, was posing in what she probably thought was a provocative way trying desperately to compete with the fire haired beauty on the other side. However next to the kindred woman she looked like a candle next to a bonfire. While part of his heart, the deeply perverted part of every man’s heart, was crying with joy, the predatory look in the eyes of the kindred woman, and the uncertain lost puppy dog look in the eyes of Sam, was all the warning he needed to know this would be a horrible mistake. This was a dangerous moment as he had to admit the vicious kindred woman was definitely in his strike zone, and against his will his little man definitely was betraying him.
Pondering how to fix this situation before he did something he would certainly regret later he escaped into his memory of the “welcoming ceremony” in the central hall. Apparently they were rather late in arriving as almost 30 would be students were waiting in a grand hall made of white stone. The ceiling was a huge dome, with a beautiful painting on it. The painting depicted the night sky, and a number of constellations were depicted as the gods they represented.

He had to admit the scale of the building surpassed his expectations. He could easily imagine a full grown dragon (as described to him) easily and comfortably resting under the dome. There was a raised platform and a dull stone in the middle of it. Apparently, as he had heard months before, that stone would shine in the color of your potential. Potential was important for magic. Generally speaking most magicians would reach their full potential within 5 years of starting their study of magic. Occasionally a magician could surpass their potential, but only by one level, but those were rare events. It was much more common for students to fall short of their potential.
He was actually starting a little later than most. Most people started studying here around their 15th or 16th year, though some started later. Glancing at the group of potential students he only saw two or three who might have been his age or older. It was hard to tell, as most of them looked as filthy as most outside humans tended to do.
Eventually they started to be tested, one at a time. Someone was orchestrating this testing, as he was last in line, with Kay’rin right next to him. Sure enough one after another went up and the only one with more potential then something called “warlock” was one person who qualified as a “channeler”. It was one of the girls, and she actually started crying tears of relief when she saw the rock turning orange rather than the red all the warlocks tested at. Those tears would have puzzled him if he hadn’t noticed the appearance of all of the female disciples in this ‘academy’ tended toward ragged and frightened. He had a sneaking suspicion the ‘witches’ were in for a hard time.
Eventually it was Kay’rin’s turn. He strode up to the stone, placed his hand on it, and it instantly turned a golden white. The eyes of the professors looked like they fell out. They all kept looking at the travel worn wizard with looks of disbelief, and he was looking rather smug. The proctor suddenly explained the judgement as “Grand Sorcerer” level potential. Which caused an explosion of noise. Jace only had a vague idea about the levels of magic. But from what he remembered humans topped out at Grand Wizard. The only grand sorcerer alive was the dragon king. He was studying Kay’rin’s face and noticed he didn’t seem surprised at all.

After the clamor died down Jace’s name was called. He had no idea what his potential was. The sage seemed quite satisfied with it, but that meant little. He pressed his hand on the stone and waited for it to light up.
Nothing happened at first then it lit up in the dull red of a warlock. He was a little worried that he just made an ass of himself, worse he had a moment of panic thinking about his need to get home, if he only had that much potential then he would never be able to do it, but he felt something resonating within himself and the stone. Something that probably had always been there but he had never used. Calming his breathing time seemed to slow down, as he used the one with the pulse of the world breathing, he merged with that irritating feeling that was rising up within him. Soon he felt a trickle of something that felt like ice water flowing into his veins and the stone started to rapidly change color, orange, green, yellow, yellow-white, white, white-gold. The same bright shining white-gold light that was shining when Kay’rin was on stage was shining now.
In all of human history not once had a human reached Grand Sorcerer. Now the school had two students with the potential to reach that stage. Of course there was no roadmap left behind for training to that level. They would have to reach it on their own. Still the noise was even more explosive then when Kay’rin was on stage. It seemed Jace’s huge frame, and bulky build really made a lasting impression on the students.
After some other formalities he was shown to his room. Upon entering he had found himself in this situation. Unsurprisingly, escaping into an unrelated memory didn't help resolve the growing crisis. So he grasped onto the first flimsy excuse he could think of. Getting a stern look on his face he said. “Looks like those idiots have no idea who we are. I’ll go talk to them about these impossible quarters. At the very least I need a window view of the ocean.”
Using that flimsy pretense, he fled, all the while that deeply perverted part of his heart was screaming at him that he was an idiot. His dick certainly seemed to agree. But that lost puppy dog look in the eyes of Sam all the memory he needed to silence the conflict in his heart. He needed to get a separate room for Verna quickly. She was too close to his ideal woman (in form) for him to trust himself alone near her.

Leave Bad Enough Alone
Something has been amiss in the city’s theaters as of late. The local bards have long done a respectable job of keeping the audiences entertained, weaving high concepts with skillful performances. But lately, a new set of bards, and their illusionist cohorts, have captured the crowd’s attention. Compared to the theater’s usual fare, their work is hackneyed and poorly plotted, with unskilled acting, bad special effects, and unsatisfying resolutions. Clearly, there must be some dark secret behind the success of these newcomers, and it’s up to the city’s true artists to find out what it is and expose the conspiracy! Or maybe the city’s bards have just become too hopelessly pretentious and derivative. It’s hard to tell. But investigate it they must! Failure is not an option!
