《The Dungeon Hive》Part 23- The Speaker

Magnificent! That’s the only word the wolfgirl could think of when describing the unicorns and even then, the word did not seem enough. Maybe the poets of Yaslay or the barbarian singers of The Kang could say more but to the simple mind of the wolfgirl, magnificent was the only word she had to describe the creatures known as unicorns.
When the wolfmen woke after the night of activities, they had found the horses changed. The Creator told the pack the beautiful creatures were known as unicorns. They were not told why the unicorns were created but no words were needed. There was no doubt in any of the wolfmen’s mind that the creatures were created to celebrate the ascension of the new alpha. The alpha almost immediately changed and led the pack out of the tunnels. As the pack had hoped, the unicorns joined them.
Together, wolfmen and unicorns ran into The Kar and thus far it has been wondrous. Running through the forest, the sheer magnificence of the unicorns was revealed. The wolfgirl could tell the unicorns were beautiful and graceful just by looking at them but in the forest, she understood they were also much more than that.
They were keeping up with the wolfmen with ease and only when running with them did the wolfgirl realized just how powerful and light-footed they were. During a run, the pack ate up the distance through power and ferocity. For the unicorns however, it was as if they glided through the forest, eating up the ground between the trees with graceful steps that at times seems to be floating above the ground. Under the summer sun, the unicorns seemed almost otherworldly. The wolfgirl slowed her pace to appreciate the sun herself.
As the wolfmen and the unicorns ran on, the wolfgirl saw that there was a huge tree nearby. The wolfgirl stopped and changed to her human form. She lazily walked to the tree and sat down against it. She looked up at the tree and smiled as she saw the sunshine coming through the leaves. She did not know how long she was there but awhile later, she caught his scent.

The wolfgirl looked in the direction the scent was coming from and felt her smile getting bigger as the alpha appeared from behind a tree. The alpha slowly walked to her on all fours but stood up on his legs as he got closer. The wolfgirl felt a surge of excitement going through her as the shadow of the alpha loomed over her. As the alpha looked down at her imperiously, a thought came to the wolfgirl.
The alpha dropped to one knee, the wolfgirl put both her hands on his chest. The alpha grinned in mild surprise and the wolfgirl took that as a sign. She whispered to the alpha, “Change.”
The alpha looked dumbfounded. The wolfgirl giggled. She couldn’t help it. It was funny how quickly the alpha’s look turned from serious and smoldering to dumb puzzlement. In the back of her mind, the wolfgirl half-wondered if the alpha was also trying to find his place in the pack. The wolfgirl shaped her hands to show a circle, moved it to the middle of the alpha’s body and said.
“The power within you. Gather it. Released it. Gather it, then relax and let it go. Change!”
Somehow, the alpha understood her. Like her, he must have felt the power within him and like the first time she changed, his change was almost immediate. The wolfgirl looked on in mute shock as the body shape of the alpha changed.
The fur went first. The fur withdrew into his body. As it did so, his body became less bulky but he also grew slightly taller. However what was most noticeable to the wolfgirl was the alpha’s face. His long protruding jaw retracted into the shape of a human jaw. His eyes turned black and his human skin was dark. Strangely, the change also gave the alpha long flowing black hair.

The alpha looked at his hands and the wolfgirl remembered that was the first thing she did as well when she first changed. She gave a chuckle and the alpha looked up at her. It was strange but since her change, the wolfgirl no longer cared about the lack of clothes. Now naked against a strange naked male however, she began to feel…well, somewhat excited.
“Alpha,” the wolfgirl said was a smile.
“Alpha,” the alpha replied with a nod. He understood her. The wolfgirl knew better than to underestimate the power of the Creator but she was still amazed the Creator had the power to give the wolfmen the ability to speak.
“Alpha,” the wolfgirl said. She the pointed at herself and said again. “Alpha.”
The alpha shook his head. “No.” The wolfgirl was surprised. She thought for sure she was the female alpha. The alpha pointed at her and said. “Weak. Mate.”
So that’s it. She was the mate of the alpha, but was considered by him too weak to be the female alpha. In a way, the wolfgirl was disappointed but the wolf side of her understood the decision. Compared to the other 3 females of the pack, she really was weaker. Smarter, more knowledgeable, but physically weaker.
“Speaker.”
“What?” the wolfgirl asked. “Speaker? What’s a speaker?”
“Speaker!” The alpha repeated. He then pointed in the direction of Big Keg, the mountain where the tunnel of the Creator was located. “Speaker. Female. Mate. Speaker!”
The wolfgirl’s eyes blinked several times as she processed what the alpha said. The alpha could not speak Common well but he did get his idea across. Of course! The wolfmen communicated not through words but through action, scents and bodily contact. The Creator was…well, a knee-high crystal. It had no scent, could hardly move and the wolfmen couldn’t speak Common well enough to communicate with it. Only the wolfgirl could. Only she could be the conduit between the Creator and the wolfmen!
The wolfgirl smile got bigger. It seemed she had underestimated the alpha. He was a lot smarter than she had given him credit for. Yes, his idea made sense. That’s was her role. She was the Speaker of The Pack!
