《Foreststorm》Chapter 66

I woke to rain. It was dreadful, cold rain and the clouds didn't look like they would stop anytime soon.

Good. No time to waste, my liberal use of magic made sure my time on this planet counted in the months, not years like when I was summoned.

That was good enough because the kingdom that summoned me should know that too, and stop bothering me with mercenaries.

It was time to start moving with haste because I had no plans to actually die, no I would live forever!

After I calmed down a few minutes later I rose, my body protected by a thick, wooden armor. Large branches stretched from my back, forming a huge pair of wings.

I rose up into the air like a goddess of death, smiling maniacally as I was in my way to freedom and life. No one could track me now, no soldiers, no heroes, no one.

Finding a way to survive the death of my body wasn't actually all that hard, nearly all good libraries I visited had them, but more as a warning, and less as a way to go, so finding a teacher had been a little challenging.

Had been, as a short visit to an adventurer's guild had been enough to find a direction, and liberal use of divination magic did the rest.

Soaring through the skies like that was perfect, flying monster would be cautious to attack me, unknown as I was, and now that I deviated from my former path of destruction by a good bit, and these people had no way to follow me anymore, as I discarded everything on my person, and my body was still immune to all direct magic.

My goal was still days away, far from any civilisation. Not if they could help it, but my future teacher had made sure any attempts on settling near him were doomed from the start, so eventually people stopped bothering.

He was sure to be ~delighted~ by my presence, it couldn't be healthy or fun to live by yourself for all this time.

I grinned, a certain kingdom would soon come to regret summoning me, oh yes they would indeed.

"It stopped raining chief." Tes'va informed her, stopping the memory.

"Are we ready to leave then?" She asked.

"Yes."

"Good, let's go."

She could have stopped the rain of course, and started moving as soon as they woke, but there'd been no reason to, the village could use the rest, and Ves'ra still needed something from the hero's memories, so she used the chance, ordering Tes'va to interrupt her once they could start moving.

Looking at the slowly heating forest, water evaporating into a thin fog, Ves'ra decided she didn't want to move like that, so she cast a small spell that would dry them a small path, allowing them to move faster.

The first order of business was to leave the spiders behind, she very much doubted there were any worthy of hunting left behind.

Afterwards, they'd move northwards, and hope for the forest to thin out a bit, well she did, so she could fly around with Arvog, searching for worthy prey.

---

A few days later Arvog spotted a large mountain range in the distance, and the forest started thinning out considerably.

This was it, she could feel it, they entered the territory if another, powerful being, and it was stalking them.

Ves'ra had Arvog turn around immediately, it would be stupid to continue further without knowing what they were hunting. Still, she could feel her heartbeat accelerate, the thrill of a new hunt coming over her.

Suddenly, a chill on her back alerted Ves'ra of something looking at them something dangerous. Arvog, deeply connected to her mind while they were flying noticed too, and dove down with all his strength, Ves'ra's magic decreasing the air resistance under his wings.

An angry screech sounded from behind them, followed by a plume of fire sailing just past them. Ves'ra couldn't look back, she had to keep her profile pressed against Arvog's flank, but she felt pretty confident their prey found them. And it was capable of flight. Just great.

Ves'ra and Arvog deepened their connection even more, nearly becoming one. Air thickened behind them, as sharp shards of ice appeared. Their pursuer screeched again, in both anger and pain this time. They continued their flight down, soon reaching the treetops, nearly kissing them while they evened their flight. They had stopped increasing the air resistance behind them a few dozen metres over the treetops and heard a satisfying crash sound out behind them, their pursuer caught off guard by the change in air pressure.

Just as they were about to turn around, to finish the being off, an angry screech, as well as more crashing, sounded out behind them. Immediately they dove downwards, into the trees as a barrier of air appeared around them, stopping their smell from escaping.

Water gathered around Ves'ra as they jumped down until they reached the ground.

The water surged into the loose forest dirt, scooped up as much of it as possible, and surrounded them in an irregular sphere, hiding them from the angry predator above.

As their minds became two again, Ves'ra's heart started beating faster. A real challenge. A fast, agile flyer - one neither of then saw coming, and one neither of them managed to see in the change. This hunt was going to be glorious.
