《Foreststorm》Chapter 19 - Grasslands

It had been a week since she bonded to Arvog, and Ves'ra had to admit that a familiar bond was a wondrous thing. Ves’ra could actually use Arvog’s energy to cast her spells from his location. That sparked several very interesting ideas for attacking enemies and had her create a waterskin for him to carry around immediately. It was about as big as hers and would enable her to rain death on her enemies from above.

Once again she was reminded about her own weaknesses, she'd be way more effective if she was more. She really hoped her evolution would be able to fix that, though she still was way off, her braided energy was way more tolerant to stretching than she ever hoped.

The most important effect of the bond - at least for her - had nothing to do with any magic, Arvog was able to understand most if not all of her instructions once she learnt to convey them as ideas rather than speech. That had been harder than she liked to admit, but she managed in the end.

Moving became easier, now that they could understand each other on a more fundamental level. The bond wasn't finished though, she could feel it changing, adapting with each interaction. She had only been able to get a rough understanding of his surroundings at first, but as she focussed on the sensation it evolved to a point that she was able to share his senses.

That had been very disorienting at first, and still was - but she was sure she'd manage in time. She was sure it would be able to help her with magic too, if she had to focus on two points of view casting several spells at once should be easy.

She felt the bond would finish evolving within a week, but that didn't concern her - it was even more useful than she had hoped.

A week had passed since the bond was fully formed and Ves'ra was in awe. In front of her was nothing, nothing but a huge clearing that stretched as far as she could see. And she could see very far indeed, with no trees to block her sight. It looked a little like the last time Arvog had risen above the trees and seen nothing but more trees is all direction. He didn't like flying too high - the air would lose density very fast and the muscles in his wing would get tired quickly. She wasn't worried - his parent had no problems flying high and he wasn't nearly their size.

She had to admit she was intimidated - she never noticed how much she relied on the cover of trees. The sun would set some time later anyway, so she decided she would leave the known tomorrow, and enjoy her last time in a familiar environment.

She was ready to head into the unknown in the next morning, though a few preparations would have to be made. She wouldn't run into any problems regarding her water supply - her magic made sure of that - but she couldn't see anything in the way of edible prey anywhere. She asked Arvog to fly as high as he managed, helping him with her magic by using her magic to increase the density of the air around him. She closed her eyes and focused on his eyes while he rose. The process took a few seconds - but she was sure she would be able to decrease that in time.

She was shocked to discover an entirely different landscape - the land presented from above wasn't nearly as flat as she thought - there were rolling hills with valleys that could conceal her entire village several times. Arvog would have to fly more than ever - she couldn't trust her own eyes in the landscape and she really didn't want to miss the human village!

She was relieved as long as she stayed in the valleys she wouldn't be nearly exposed as she feared. Her worry about food evaporated too - she could see large rabbits running around in most valleys and could see a big herd of strange deer - they lacked any antlers, had broader bodies and were significantly taller. One of them would be able to last them quite some time, though she would have to be careful when hunting the first - there was no guarantee the deer would actually be peaceful - she stood little chance if that herd chose to just trample over her.

Sadly her target was nowhere in sight - she would just have to continue in the same direction for now. Either she’d find the human village in time or she’d meet another human hunting band, now that they could properly talk she was sure she could convince them to lead her to their home. It was quite lucky that Arvog was able to fly longer every day - it would be far harder to navigate and hunt without aerial vision in these strange grasslands.

Ves’ra knew they would need a lot more water than in the forest a day later - there was no river within sight and the suns were a lot warmer without any trees to provide shade. She had already deviated from her original plan - she really wanted to taste one of these strange deer, so she followed them through the grasslands, studying their behavior.

She was happy to notice they were no predators, or most of them were not. The biggest one - leading the herd - was happily stomping all small animals in its path and eating them after. She really wanted that one, and had already started a plan that would involve the least risk for the both of them. She decided to wait until they settled down for the night, it would make it easier despite the added complications.
