《Foreststorm》Chapter 10 - Tracking

Humans were strange. That's the only thing Ves’ra could think about as her new friends ate the roasted boar. Why would they preserve the meat before eating it? At least they let her have something before they did, it was delicious, though not as good as the wolf.

Even worse, they wanted to hunt some strange flying monster, a monster that was apparently responsible for Kes’ro’s death.

She didn't really want to be anywhere near that thing - a ‘wyvern’ - but she had no choice as the humans would probably find her village if she didn't lead them to the clearing. They were friendly enough, but she wouldn't trust them with her home.

The clearing would be easy enough to find, the humans were already moving in the right direction and she would only have to slightly change the direction of their path. They started their journey shortly after midday, the two human shamans needing more rest than the other humans.

It seemed humans didn't have more shamans than kobolds, seeing their reaction to her magic. Judging by the speed the humans moved before she joined them she knew she’d have problems keeping up with them, their bodies were just better suited for moving extended periods of time. She could somewhat alleviate that problem by increasing her body heat, but she would need way more food and be dead tired the night after.

She didn't want the humans near her home for any longer than possible though, so she decided to tough it up move as fast as possible. They wouldn't reach the clearing today anyways, it was on the other side of her village.

They had to pause three more times, all because of the humans that didn't know how to move in a forest. They were attacked by another two boars and a bear, the humans took some of the parts of the boars, but most was left in the forest, what a waste! Seeing as they didn't want to eat the best parts she claimed them for herself, they would just be eaten by something else if she didn't.

The last animal to attack them was a bear, an animal that had no right moving as silently as it did. Ves’ra had dutifully warned the humans once she heard it approach, already salivating at the delicious feast that was sure to come.

Sadly the bear was smarter than the boars and decided they weren't worth the trouble after taking a few sticks - ‘arrows’ - in its body. She moped for a bit, but ultimately got over herself, she couldn't expect others to hunt for her.

The lead human stopped her a little before sundown and they set about making camp. One of the human shaman lit a fire while the rest got more of their strange skins out of their packs. They had their own food too, a little meat and lots of strange plant products that wouldn't help them blend in with the forest at all! Why they ate the strange plants was unknown to her, though to be fair they didn't have any scales for the plants to color. Still, she took some of the meat offered, having burnt as much food as she had just to keep up with the human’s long legs. The meat tasted like all preserved meat, bland but it would satiate her.

She woke with two rising suns, noting how they seemed to grow and move apart every day ever since winter. Only one human was up, keeping watch. He wasn't all that good, only noticing her once she stopped next to his sitting form.

She nodded a greeting and left the camp to hunt for her breakfast, she wanted a fresh meal. Just as she finished her squirrel she thought of the humans, they shared their food yesterday, so it was only right to do the same.

Finding a warren of rabbits only took a little time and flushing them out by creating lightning near their home made it easy to catch two rabbits for the humans. And another one for the journey back.

The humans were already up when she came back, all but two looking ready for another day of walking. The two shamans looked like they didn't want to move anytime soon, let alone another day. They looked relieved when she returned, as if she couldn't have easily snuck out in the night. She indicated the suns and what position the suns would be in once they arrived and set to eat the rest of her rabbit, dropping the two rabbits she hunted near the newly ignited fire, pointing between humans and rabbits.

They set out soon after, the humans following her once again. The attacks decreased as they neared her village, the chieftain cleared all things that would be dangerous to hatchlings whenever she felt like it. Nothing noteworthy happened for the next quarter of a day, they came upon some old traps but she made sure none of the humans had time to notice them.

It took a little longer than she estimated, but they arrived at the clearing with nearly half a day before darkness. The two shamans plopped down in the shade of the trees the moment they arrive while the warriors scanned the sky.

Ves’ra decided to stay, she really wanted to see how they would track a flying monster. The humans didn't need to know that though; and having been in the company of their trackers for most of a day she could reasonably predict the range the humans were able to detect her in. She would still be able to follow them, courtesy of their two shamans. It was quite interesting to watch, three of the humans went all over the clearing and even started climbing some trees until they seemed to decide on one direction for a reason she couldn't comprehend.

She would follow them further, they left enough food for her to keep up anyways and if they actually managed to kill their prey she was in for a feast!
