“Oooh, the ability to reprogram ID cards, best birthday gift ever OmniSystem.” A much older and Wiser hank said to the system boxes.
He knew they probably couldn't hear him or didn’t care what he thought of them. But old habits die hard, and it is hard not to personify the entity that informs you of all events in your life, whether you want it to or not. Pretty common affliction, Grandpa used to flirt with his window…. It was creepy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He only needed to run a little further, but they were closing in fast.
Hank Lv 38(D), had known the location of the bunker for almost all 40 years of his life, a secret passed from father to son for generations. A legend, and now finally he had a key, an access card, hacked to make the bunker view him as friendly. Even if he failed, the facility once awoken would slaughter his pursuers. Dad always told him that grandpa went in and never came back out, so the Scavenger Family Was pretty sure that the place was a deathtrap for the unwary. Maybe even an Ancient Technological Dungeon.

Their howls echoed across the wastes behind him. The Steel talon raiding party, C Ranked cybernetic madmen sprinting, some on all fours, some on two legs, all relentless and extremely fast. Their hobbies include murder, rape, mutilation, cannibalism, and if you are very lucky, in that order too. If they were normal Raiders he could kill a few and drive the rest off. The steel talons are however fearless, relentless, Cyborgs, modified by their mad leader to lack any feelings that would inhibit them, like sadness, remorse, or mercy.
They were not as one might think, totally emotionless; Rage, the thrill of the hunt, joy in torture, blood and pain. They kept any emotion that would make them revel in the monsters they had become.
In addition, Their horrific B Ranked Boss implanted them with steel reinforcements that strengthen their bones and assist the motions of the user, making them stronger, better, and faster than normal people. Creating a final product that is worse than any man or machine alone, a horrific hybrid of the worst parts of both.
So the scavenger refused to slow down or look back, at least not until he got to the Ruined Candy Shoppe and slowed just enough to run inside, slide over the counter and into the backroom. He shoved an empty crate out of the way revealing a trapdoor. He could hear the Talons crashing into the front of the shoppe as he tore the trapdoor open and dropped into the darkness below.
He fell 100 feet as ladder rungs blurred dangerously past beside him, but he trusted his Jr Shield(Advanced) to absorb the impact of the fall. The spherical shield sparked to life halfway down and popped as it impacted the ground, causing sparks and blue light to leak out of the device on his belt powering it. He swore as he realized it had overloaded, almost exploded, which would have been an awful end to his life.
He slid The shield off his belt and left it near the bottom of the ladder with a triangular rock wedged into the center of it. An extremely makeshift mine, but his Improvised Explosives talent told him if someone landed on it after jumping from halfway up the ladder or more, the device would rip in half before overloading catastrophically. He allowed himself a grim satisfied smile as he ran deep into the darkness.
Sure enough, he heard a magnificent blast from behind him followed by howls of pain and rage.

You are now level D(41)
Normally he would be ecstatic at such a level jump, but today Hank just dismissed the notices as he rounded a corner in the downward slanted tunnel taking him further into the earth. He finally reached a huge, circular, gleaming, metal door. A dozen Scythe shaped panels of a blueish steel meet in the center of the closed iris doorway. Three card readers are on the right of the door; one so low and small a toddler could use it, one so large that a 10-foot behemoth may be able to use it properly. and one at normal human height. The man ignored the spectacle and waved his key card over the adult human height card reader, the reader chimed and a green light on it flashed before the iris door snapped open, the scythe shaped panels rotating out of view into the circular doorway in an instant.

“Welcome [new user] to the humanities end research facility. It has been 2549 years since the last fatal accident. we here at the H.E.R.F. have dedicated ourselves to worker safety.” an electronic voice from the walls of the facility spoke.
He ran in as he quickly dismissed notifications from something he had been looking forward to doing for most of his life. Another time he would have been elated to get past the doorway that had stumped generations of his family, but today he heard the howls closing in behind him and sped further inside, no time to try and figure out how to close the door behind him. the bright lights of the bunker had a vaguely green tint to them as he jogged down the hall breathing raggedly.
“They’re going to kill me before I find something to defend me” he breathlessly muttered to himself.
The lights turned yellow after he spoke. and the facilities Electronic Voice responded in an unexpected way.
“Workers reports of possible danger have put the facility into a yellow alert. Please report to the nearest security checkpoint, emergency drones will be deployed to assist in evacuating affected zones.”
Wall panels every 10 feet or so slid upwards revealing friendly-looking humanoid robots. They were all shaped like men and women in business suits. The suits on the “men” were black and charcoal grey painted areas of the body while the unpainted shiny chrome hands and faces seemed to be his “skin”. The women looked much the same with suit and pants painted on their bodies but with a few buttons undone revealing a bit more of the silvery skin on their chests, however not enough for chrome cleavage. The robots were designed to seem modest and polite.
Three of each robot type took up the same pace as the man screening him from danger. While the rest headed toward the entrance. In moments he could hear the sounds of shredding metal and howls as the Steel Talons ripped into the polite looking robots.
Moments later, the lights turned red
“Hostile invading forces detected. Class C cybernetic implants detected. Escalating to Class C force settings.”
The sounds of gunfire and the zaps of laser Rifles could be heard in the running battle behind him. As he headed deeper into the facility, he noticed the eyes of his escorting robots had turned to a glowing red, while their chrome hands had flipped back revealing a machine gun muzzle coming out of their left arms and a laser cannon lens emerging from their right arms. This was awesome! He had his own robot death squad!
Sure he didn’t really control them, but the facilities Robots were fighting the Talons and trying to protect him. That was enough to make the years he spent hacking the chip seem worth it. He had to swap the ancient genetic samples in the card with his own. Then he had to hack to settings so that the card read as a new user on his first day of work. The AI of the facility was probably too smart to believe any of the old workers have come back after 2500ish years since the facility was last active.
The end started over 3000 years ago, so the fact that they kept it running for nearly 500 years after shows the power of the people who once lived and worked here. People have been finding old tech forever, but the tech of this place was meant to work after the end and fight the horrors of the waste, merging technologies from all over the world and every collapsing pocket world and or reality and try to keep up with the changes.
The tech of this facility could run on ambient radiation or mana theoretically allowing it to run forever if the world stays laden with both kinds of dangerous energy. They almost succeeded too, they seemed to have ceased operation sometime between 487 AE(After End) and 522 AE. If only they made it to 577; when the Great Stabilization occurred, and the rules that govern reality stopped changing. They may have been able to save so many, or at least create a more civilized Faction than most of the ones out there. These polite but deadly greeters were just one piece of evidence he had to support that.
The humble role of the Faction Head would have to fall to him. Once he had more control over this place he could do anything. A raiding party of Talons would be no problem. As badass as these robots were, they were just part of the system the facility used to test guests; an aesthetically pleasing and harmless-seeming group to greet guests and guide them. They were also the first line of defence, but only really meant to slow down a powerful foe. The real war robots were still inactive below.
His guards suddenly surrounded him and ushered him to a sparking panel in a narrow side corridor. He didn’t really have time to resist or argue.
The facility AI spoke again blandly, “Greetings -New Employee-. due to an -Enemy Action- this device requires a technician in order to power the elevator to a lower floor.”
The voice paused then became excessively cheery for the grim news it was now delivering. “Congratulations! You have been promoted to “Junior Technician”. Congratulations! You have been assigned your first duty: -emergency junction repair- You have -negative 23 years- to repair the junction before errors in connection with this floor begin.“
Congratulations! You have received a side quest: -repair errors in external floor security-
The filled in blanks were just as bland as it’s earlier tone making the cheery “Congratulations” all the more jarring. Maybe a joke on how much the Omni-System liked to congratulate users.
He grumbled softly as he pulled out his tools. He heard the sounds of battle getting closer. He didn’t really want to stop, but if the AI was right he couldn’t escape, get reinforcements or more powerful defenders until this was fixed. The inside of the damaged panel had a bunch of odd additions; like someone had already tried to fix it, or maybe they were trying to cut the AI off from the floor altogether. Then he recognized some of the homemade electrical tape, the same kind his Grandpa taught him to make before he disappeared. He must have been trying to fix it, or maybe he was trying to stop the AI from hunting him. He looked at his guards wondering if they slew his ancestor.
Out of his peripheral vision, above him, the man saw something. A shadow fell from the ceiling between him and his guards. A Talon stood there nearly a foot taller than Hank. Proud, arrogant, deadly. The Talon grinned before stabbing a claw-tipped metal hand through Hanks' chest and into the open panel behind him.
The lights turned a deeper shade of red. The robot guards fired at the Talons back with everything, hitting both “men” and the claw shredded panel on the other side of them before the AI could get a command through to stop them. With the junction destroyed, the AI lost all control over the robots on the first floor. The lights went to a normal white shade for a few minutes while the Talons laughed, ripping apart inactive robots.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then the frustrated AI made its first real mistake in centuries. It decided to self destruct its outer floors.
Unfortunately, in its frustration and the mounting pile of errors, it failed to realize the correct command would have been to self destruct the “upper” floor, not the “outer” floors. Outer floors which not only included the top greetings and security floor, but also the bottom highest security floor.
A floor that was of such high security that the facilities controlling AI knew nothing of it. There were no cameras or drones down there. There was empty space on the blueprint. even the staircase down to it was locked and filled with enchanted concrete. The only files associated with it told the AI to speak to specific high profile Technicians, all of whom had died long ago.
Just three pits filled in with enchanted concrete. These steel-capped pits had monitoring equipment and alarms in case “something” escapes. Alarms that would signal people that were long dead.
Its ignorance was not the AIs fault though. For you see; the lab AIs creators feared their AI getting its hands on the tech sealed in the second pit. A result they ironically feared could be apocalyptic. So instead, something better happened. Or maybe what happened was something much, much worse.
It is really a matter of opinion.
