《The Infinite Labyrinth》122. Interlude: The Wall

Imposing Knight Augusta Cowen was starting to hate that sensation. Years went by without, and then, it was there again and again. You puked out your guts like you were a mere mundane with spoiled food. All the time.
Lingering Death. -50% of potentials and vitals, regeneration halved.
“Anyone else?”
“Foale bit it as well. But he’s already qualified on this Cube,” Douglas replied.
“Bollocks.”
“Face it, it’s not happening,” Aubert said. “That’s the third time we try this specific Noxious Cube, and it always kills you before we kill it.”
Aubert handed her the gear he had removed to perform the resurrection. She checked the team status and saw that Habborlain had brought back Foale, which made sense. And now, the team faced two days of boredom until they were back to fighting strength.
Cowen immediately felt better once she’d re-equipped back her gear. The negative status might curtail the benefits, but the familiar feel of her sword and the rest of the armour was welcome. And not being in mundane underclothes was good, even if the team was used to her anyway. One did not live with the same four people for almost a decade without being used to it.
“That’s not an acceptable answer, Waldo,” she said.
“But that’s the truth, boss,” he said, insisting. “We can kill any of the five easy jelly cubes, but the hard ones require more milestones and better gear.”
“I’m the only one with five…”
“And unless we get stuff and levels, we’re not going to win.”
Cowen looked at the rest of the team. Blair was, of course, inscrutable as always, and the two others were scrupulously looking at anything but her. Which, of course, gave away what they really thought.
“We get gear from those. By the way?” she asked, inquiring on the Ancient's treasure.

Cowen sighed. There was close to zero chance Habborlain would like those. Wisdom and skill might be nice, but against an artefact, even one nearly 150 levels below, that was all but useless.
As if sensing her mood, Aubert added immediately, “I know. We all got some nice upgrades since it’s all max-level Ancients. But there’s only eight of them, they take nearly two weeks to regenerate, and meanwhile, we get hobbled most of the time.”
The Physics, who had remained silent, added his own word of wisdom.
“There are many ways to make oneself ready.”
“Fine. We’re heading back.”
The square stone in the endless sea of Zabarkal was empty and clean, as the goop from the Ancient Cube that guarded this specific location had long since evaporated, leaving only its chest. Cowen almost kicked that one out of frustration.
“Millard is going to laugh. I bet he and his team are going to come out and play.”
She looked at the rest of the team for confirmation, but the swirling rainbows told her that all four of them were already on their way back to Sarmasios’ Recall stone.
She started her own. Admitting defeat was hard, but Professionals who didn’t acknowledge their limits were very likely to meet Final Death one day.

Child of the Ancients: An Apocalypse LitRPG
It all started in the middle of Dante's nap. He wanted to sleep his life away, but the system denied his request. Instead, it began to transform the Earth, integrating it into the multiverse by granting everyone stats and skills. He was talented, or so the system thought. And that meant he needed to be challenged. After being sent into a deadly cavern, Dante strives for the future he's always desired. But when he learns about the secrets hidden within him, he's shaken to his very core. He wishes for the nightmare to end until something goes wrong. [The world will end in one year.] Instead of everyone receiving a relatively gentle tutorial, the people of Earth are deemed redundant. Dante makes it his goal to save as many people as he can before the world ends, but with billions of lives at stake, he might have to turn into a monster before he can become a hero. Planned updates (2500+ words): M/W/F. 12pm AEST/ 9am EST. M-F during Writeathon. [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] Author's Note: All system apocalypse novels seem to jump straight over the apocalypse itself, which I find very sad. I don't want this to turn into a typical fantasy novel in about ten chapters. Instead, I hope to explore the destruction of society and how things would look if superpowers suddenly appeared in the real world. Before the real apocalypse happens, of course. There will be base building, and likely romance once things settle down. Also dragons, because they are awesome :)

The Roseguard's Odyssey: The tale of the hunted
Ablan is the home of the most skilled warriors in Aelmion, the brotherhood of bounty hunters. But even these ruthless hunters are kept in line by the Council Shadows, ten apex hunters and their guilds who rule Ablan from the top of the floating oasis casino. Luna is a shadow of Ablan. But when it comes to bounties, she and her guild have two strict rules: no killing, and no contracts involving children or animals in any way. When a criminal syndicate came to her to bring in a group of slavers, it was supposed to just end with her being paid her weight in gold. But aside from her reward, what she found in the slaver’s mines was Elizabeth. Unable to leave the seven-year-old alone, she breaks her own rule and agrees to bring the child home. But as they begin the long journey across the continent, Luna finds out that the child is the missing Princess Elizabeth Balder Van Stahlblut II, the heir of the two powerful empires of the Braenarim Republic and the Iron Nation of Aspana. As if protecting a princess is bad enough, it only gets worse. To get home, they need to go through the United Silvus States, a pro-human nation that is hell bent on taking the princess by any means. But not just Silvus is their problem. A race of murderous machines, mage executioners called the Huntsmen, the enigmatic Chimera trading company, other bounty hunters, and even savage monsters in the dark stand in their way. To protect her, all of Luna’s skills and the limits of her morality are put to the test. But will it be enough? Can both of them survive the Tale of the hunted? =0*o*0= Cover portrait created by the very talented tsuki_desenha at Instagram! Look him up for his incredible work!
