《Super Soldier not Super Hero》Ch: 60 The Patrol

Emily joined the rest of her squad by the door. They were joined by a Korean Sergeant named Koi. He was a normal human attached to the Korean Defence Force that was mostly filled with supers. He was a career soldier who worked alongside the supers supervising them. He looked skittish to Emily.
“Does he know something that we don’t know?” Emily wondered looking at the Korean Sergeant. “Is he just scared because we might be going up against supers or is it something else?” The Korean Sergeant nodded to everyone as Emily’s friend and squad leader G arrived.
G pulled out a map of the area and placed it on the ground. “Ok, we will follow the river up to this point. From here we will check out the bridge to Chilgok. If we need to we can get closer but we should have a good advantage point from here. We will swim across the river here then head to Camp Carroll. The Major has given me some places he wants me to check out. Then we follow the river to this marina. We do a quick look around here before we head south to Daegu. At Daegu, we look for where they are keeping the American soldiers and their families. There are three camps there we need to check out. Then we head back to the river and cross here and head home. Questions?” G asked the group.
When no one said anything G nodded. “Ok people, let's get going. It's going to be a long patrol.”
They left the bunker with Emily leading the way. She had both her superweapons plus her pistol. G had the M9 rifle. Thompson and Muller both had their M4’s. The sun was just setting as they exited the bunker. It took them an hour to reach the river and two hours after that to get to the first checkpoint.
Emily stopped by the edge of the road that followed the river. The bridge was less than a half mile away. G stepped up beside her and looked through her binoculars. She scanned the bridge for a while then handed Emily the binoculars.
“What do you see?” G asked her.
Emily looked through the binoculars and spotted a small sandbag bunker on either side of the bridge. Two guards were stopping the small amount of traffic that was crossing on either side of the bridge. As she watched the last car passed the southern part of the bridge.
“Two guards on each side of the bridge. They are carrying A.K. 3As. The old version.” Emily reported to G. “I don’t see any heavy weapons or vehicles.”
“What does that tell you,” G asked Emily.
“That they are supers?” Emily said not sure what G was getting at.
“Could be but we don’t know for sure. No, we can infer that they don’t have the manpower to fully guard the bridge. That is good for us.” G replied. “Thompson, stay here and watch that bridge. I want to know all their movements like a change of shifts. You know the drill. If we are not back by dawn head back to the bunker and report in.”
Thompson nodded. G led the squad across the road to the river. Emily grimaced at the river. She was not a fan of water anymore. Sure she was a good swimmer and could her breath for over an hour but she still hated to be reminded that she weighed seven-hundred pounds now. With a sigh, she waded into the water. To make things worse she could feel her socks getting wet.

Taking a deep breath she knelt down in the water. Once she was fully submerged she kicked off from the bottom of the muddy river. She zoomed across the river with four breaststrokes. In less than ten seconds she was across. She could have made it fast with her super strength but she didn’t want to create a wake in the water by going to fast. She already created a small one but it was hardly noticeable.
She remained underwater for a few minutes looking around. She didn’t see anything through the blurry water above her so she surfaced with her gun raised. Looking around she scanned the river bank and only relaxed when she didn’t see anything nearby. She made her way up the river bank and hid in a bush.
She looked behind her to the river as the rest of the squad swam across the river mostly underwater. They would surface for a breath before submerging again. G made it across second just as Emily settled down in the bush. She too had used her super strength to swim across the river. Emily briefly wondered why the squad leader hadn't made faster time swimming the river.
Muller and the Korean Sergeant took a few minutes more to make it across the river. G in the meantime had stopped by a tree and was watching the bridge with her binoculars. Emily looked to the bridge to see what she was looking at.
She was just time to see the two guards on Emily’s side of the river get into an argument. One of the guards slapped the other knocking him back a few steps. The guard that had been slapped recovered and to a step towards the other soldier. Before the soldier could do anything the slapped guard side kicked him. The guard who started the whole thing was sent flying into the air about ten feet before he landed on the road. He stayed down for a few seconds. Enough time Emily was wondering if he was knocked unconscious before he stood back up and staggered back to the bunker. The two soldiers didn’t fight after that but they did keep to the opposite sides of the bunker.
“Supers,” Emily whispered to G.
“Yes captain obvious, it would appear you are correct. What else can you infer from what you saw.” G asked putting down her binoculars.
“That you say infer too much,” Emily replied back and smiled at her friend.
“Jackhole.” G replied looking over her shoulder smiling at Emily. “No about the supers.”
Emily paused a few seconds then said. “They are low-level Brutes.”
“Yea if you kicked someone as that idiot did, how far do you think you could send someone into the air?” G asked. “You know what nevermind. Let's just call it far. I don’t need to feed your ego right now.” Emily smiled and gave her friend a little finger wave.
They followed the river closer to the bridge until the river split off about three-quarter of a mile from the bridge. The second river was much smaller and it turned west into town. They passed a few shops and homes that were completely dark before they came to a large open rice paddy. They crossed the smaller river made their way through the waterlogged rice paddies to Camp Carroll.
Emily ran across the street that was between her and the Camp. She leaned up against the twelve-foot wall that surrounded the Camp. The wall was topped with razor-wire. G led them around down the street until she paused in between two street lights. She nodded to Emily.

Emily nodded back and jumped. She landed on top of the wall and ignoring the razor wire reached down and pulled muller up over the wall. Making sure that he wasn’t hit by the wire and swung him around and dropped him on the other side of the wall. She repeated the process with the Korean Sergeant. G simply jumped over the wall. Emily jumped down and rejoined her group.
On the other side of the wall was a large sidewalk that was large enough for a platoon to run on. They quickly crossed the sidewalk and found themselves in a tiny town within the much large town outside. Emily spotted a movie theater across a baseball field. It would have made her nostalgic if any of the lights were on. Now it only made her fear for the people who lived on base.
G pulled out a notepad and started writing notes. Once she was done she motioned for Emily to lead them deeper into the Camp. G would stop the squad every now and again and write something down. There were a few random walking patrols of North Korean soldiers but they were easily avoided. Other than a few soldiers the camp was deserted.
When they reach a really big warehouse G had them stop while she went ahead. She paused by the door and picked the lock. Looking around she disappeared into the warehouse. Emily waited nervously for her to return. When G did finally come out of the warehouse she was smiling. She nodded at them and motioned for them to go.
Instead of going back the way they came they went to the back gate. The gate was being guarded by two guards. Unlike the guards on the bridge, these two looked like they were friends and were both standing by the guard hut talking. G wrote in her notebook and motioned for Emily to cross the wall where they were. They repeated the process where Emily helped Muller and the Korean Sergeant over the walls while G jumped.
They ran down the very deserted street to the smaller river. They followed the river bank staying out of sight which wasn’t hard as the town was completely dark and deserted. They didn’t even see any North Koreans. G stopped the squad at the marina and started to write in her notebook.
Emily scanned the marina looking for threats. She found none. What she did find were two barges that were tied up against a cement wall. They were empty. There was a bunch of boats in the marina mostly commercial fishing boats that were being repaired. Beside the marina was a parking lot that had a few trucks in it. G scribbled furiously in her notebook before she put it away. She smiled motioned that they were done here.
Emily led the squad at a light jog southwest to Camp Daegu through a heavily urban city environment. According to the map, it was twelve miles through two darkened cities from Camp Carroll to Camp Henry the first camp in Daegu. About a mile southeast was Camp Walker the largest camp in Daegu. They never made it to Camp Henry though. Standing on top of a small hill they looked out at a completely dark Daegu city. They were looking at glowing lights on the horizon from where the map said Camp Walker was located.
Emily led her squad to Camp Walker. Like Camp Carroll, Camp Walker was surrounded by a twelve-foot wall. If it wasn’t for the Korean Sergeant who led them to a small building them would have walked around the edge of the camp looking for a way in. The Sergeant led them up to the stairs of a shop to the roof where they could look into the camp.
Emily cursed as she looked over the edge of the roof into the well lit Camp. She could see thousands of people sleeping outside on what looked like a soccer field. They were surrounded by three back to back chain link fences. The people were packed in pretty tightly and were laying down next to each other. There was a large movie screen and a propaganda movie was showing. Emily looked over at G and saw her drawing a pretty good sketch of the Camp.
G asked the Korean Sergeant if he knew any other areas where they could look down upon the camp. She wanted at least three more areas. He showed them a few more store and one apartment building. They climbed up onto the roofs and G sketched the camp in her notebook. Once she was done they headed northeast towards the river. They stopped by the bridge by Chilgok to pick up Thompson. They sat with him for what was left of the night watching the bridge. Just as the sun rose they abandoned their position and left for the bunker.
Back a the bunker Emily grabbed a quick breakfast and headed to her room. She took another shower and as she was washing her clothes again she noticed that she had tears in her uniform from the razor wire. With a sigh, she went and asked around for a sewing kit. One of the Korean Defence Force ladies had one and she repaired her uniform. Once her uniform was fixed she climbed into bed and went to sleep.
She was awoken several hours later and told that the Major was calling an all-hands meeting. On her way towards the garage, she desired to get some dinner. Still eating her meal she sat down with the rest of her people. Looking over to her left she spotted the Korean Defence Force also sitting in on the meeting.
Emily was just finishing up on her meal when the Major walked in with a Marine Corporal. Frowning she turned to Yrawl. “Who is that?” She asked him in a whisper.
“Melvin Saxton. A survivor who was hiding out in the woods. He’s escaped from up north and was making his way south when a patrol found him.” He explained.
“Ok people settle down.” The Major said to the room. “In a few hours we are going to head out and free our people but before we can do that we need a plan. I spent the last few hours with the good Lieutenant Rhee and we think we got this. First, let me show you what we are going up against. This is a video of the attack at the Demilitarized zone (DMZ).”
The video was only five minutes but it was enough to silence the room. The video was a grainy black and white but it showed enough. The video showed a bunch of trucks arriving on the North Korean side of the DMZ and a huge number of soldiers got out. They all lined up in neat formations and started to walk towards the minefield that separated the two countries. A guy who was marching in the front raised something to his mouth and suddenly everyone started to run towards the minefield. The man in front pulled a sword from his waist and charge along with his men.
The mines exploded sending soldiers flying into the air. They quickly got up and rejoined the other charging soldiers. In less than ten seconds they had crossed the minefield and were closing in on the South Korean side of the DMZ. The huge explosions rocked the charging me. Most got up again but a few stayed down. Emily watched in horror as nothing stopped them from charging the line. They literally pulled the fence down and raced into the South Korean soldiers who were defending their side of the border. It was a slaughter.
The video ended and the Major turned off the projector. “That is what we face when we move tonight. I’m not showing this to scare you but I’m showing you this to make you aware of what we are up against. I have a plan that I think will work and setting our countrymen free. This is what we are going to do.”
The plan had three parts to it. The first part was getting weapons. They had a lack of weapons in the bunker and they needed to fix that. Next, they needed a distraction. The lastly they needed a way to transport their people to the bunker. The first and second part were combined. A team would attack Camp Carroll and steal weapons and other supplies. They would exit on the two barges and float down the river until they reached the bridge. The team would have to eliminate the supers guarding the bridge but once that was done they were home free. The plan called for the first team to plant explosives on the bridge and at a designated time they would blow the bridge. They would also leave some surprised in Camp Carroll to make things worse.
The last step depended on the North Koreans. If they reinforced Camp Carroll from Camp Walker then the rest of the OD would attack. They would use trucks from the marina to evacuate the people in Camp Walker. They would use the barges as a bridge for the people to cross once they arrived at the river. They would then disappear into the woods and lead the people to the bunker.
Emily’s squad was to join the first team that would attack Camp Carroll. The main job for their squad was making their way to the bridge after they raided the Camp and take out the supers. The Marine Corporal would join them. The meeting broke up and Emily and her squad went to meet the Corporal.
